PCOS vs Polycystic Ovaries

Can one have polycystic ovaries but not have PCOS? I had a gynecological US on Friday part of my initial infertility work-up and the doctor said my ovaries look polycystic on the US, and then said, "but you have a diagnosis of PCOS so that's no surprise, right?" When I told her I didn't have a PCOS dx that I knew of, she was like, "Oh, ok." The visit continued with a bombardment of information and options, so I didn't really get to think of all my questions until after I left. So, I will call her back tomorrow with my huge list of questions, but I thought I'd ask you all about the polycystic ovaries vs PCOS first. From what I've read about PCOS, the only other sign/symptom that I've had is moderate acne since the age of 11 and some odd, scant random hair growth here and there. I have fairly regular periods, a normal BMI, no issues with blood sugar or blood pressure, no hair loss, and according to the OV Watch I've been using, I ovulate. I also have one child already that I conceived with no assistance and fairly quickly. NOt sure what to think here.

I think there are different degrees of PCOS and my sister has the most severe.... overweight, excess hair growth, very irregular periods and so forth. I on the other hand have a very mild version of it where i only have cysts. I have a normal period and normal everything.... but occasionally i get cyst and even had one removed a few years back. I think they use pcos as a general term to describe lots of things.... but i dont think thats necessarily good to make people think they have "issues" when in fact they just may not ovulate 12 times a year. I dont know the answer.... just wanted to let you know that im in your boat--- and im ttc#3 now. GL 2 U!!!!!

I have PCOS and this is a very interesting question! I have very irregular af's (which seem to becoming somewhat normal with help of metformin PLUS I got a pos opk friday..PRAISE THE LORD! Very rare for me!) I am overweight, have the acne..I have noticed over the past few months that I am getting a slight happy trail<--devestating to me! I am not insulin resistant, however. I must say that I also feel the acne is getting better..again I think its bc of the metformin. Im also taking fertileaid. I knwo none of this answers ur question, but just wanted ya to know there are so many different types of PCOS that its crazy..and even if you do have PCOS its not always that bad. Tons of women get pregnant on their own rather quickly! GL!

Vicky--- my sister was able to get her cycles under control with Metformin. She is now starting to TTC and she thinks shes going to start clomid.... so shes not a success story YET.... but it just goes to show that theres all kinds of pcos.... and to not count yourself out of the TTC game!!! CHristy and all--MUCH BABY DUST***************************************

Christy- well heres the thing, just b/c you have poly cystic ovaries doesnt mean you have PCOS. In fact my RE states that 25% of women have polcystic ovaries, but much less have PCOS. She said in Europe if you have polycystic ovaries they say you have PCOS. However, in the US you must also have some other symtom. Just and FYI the abnormal hair growth and acne are due to an increase in male hormones- which commonly occurs with PCOS, but definately not everyone.Sure signs are irregular periods, anovulatory cycles, or insulin resistance. Sounds to me if you need to make sure you are having proper follicle growth and ovulation- if you do, then I doubt you have PCOS. I have PCOS- I am insulin resistant and dont ovulate b/c of lack of follicle growth. All of my hormones are fine so I have no excess hair or acne. Hope this helps.
