My prolactin level was 143. My doc put me on parlodel. After a month it was down and I became pregnant. My baby is 4 months old now. Will my prolactin still be elevated when I stop nursing? Will I have to take parlodel again?

During the past 2 months I have had quite serious period pains, however still no period. Spoke to my doctor today and he advised me to hang on and wait for another 4 weeks before I can see him and do a scan. Is this normal being on Bromo and waiting for the ovulation to begin? I havent had any periods for the past 4 years. Started Bromo in October and my prolactine level was then 95, in beginning of December I was down to 35 and now in mid January tests showed a level of 27.

Has anyone experienced this?

Yes I have had a blood test that also found I had a high prolactin level and I also have had breast milk production since I had my first child who is now almost 11 years old. My doctor ordered an MRI which I just took a couple of days ago and I am waiting on the results to let me know if I have a brain tumor or not.

o VITAMIN B6 - is apparently linked to the female reproductive process. Birth control pills almost completely eliminate this vitamin from the body. In a study of 14 women, aged 23 to 31, who had unexplained infertility and who were unable to become pregnant for from 18 months to 7 years, 11 of the 14 became pregnant within 6 months, the 8th woman became pregnant after 11 months, and the other 2 dropped out of the study--one after adopting a child and the other due to divorcing. Progesterone concentrations increased in 5 of the 7 women whose hormone levels were measured. A proper balance of estrogen and progesterone is essential for pregnancy to occur. Vitamin B6 deficiency leads to a buildup of estrogen in the system and the ovary responds by shutting down its progesterone production, which can lead to miscarriage and luteal phase defects. B6 is also effective as a bromocriptine in lowering prolactin--the hormone which prepares the mother for breast feeding; too much prolactin can prevent pregnancy.

Been trying for 2.5 yrs with one miscarriage a year ago- just diagnosed in January with high prolactin with a level of 29.9- within 4 weeks of being on parlodel it is now 5.9! And this cycle I ovulated on Day 15- usually I am anywhere between 28-34 days. Never missed a period, always ovulated but have found that late ovulation can mean irregular ovulation preventing conception. I never would have known that my prolactin was high without the blood test- breasts were very sore before period came- didn't have the pain this past cycle. We are scheduled for IUI tomorrow morning- I just wanted to share my journey with you so I can update you all with hopefully good news sometime in the future. Good luck to everyone- All I can do is believe that this drug will help us!!

Good luck to all of you taking this drug. I had the IUI done yesterday and now am in the dreaded 2 weeks of waiting!! It's been nice to hear from people going through the same thing- especially the ones who have achieved pregnancy after lowering their prolactin. Thanks for sharing! It gives me hope. Tiffany Jo, how long did it take on bromo for you to conceive?

BCiervo: My husband and I decided to be on the medicine for about 4 months before trying to concieve. I have a microadenoma which was causing my high prolactin levels. I wanted to give my body a chance to have a consistently low level for a few months and also have a regular period before trying to concieve. So, we used protection while on the Bromo. Even though we decided to wait, my doctor warned me that we could become pregnant immediately while on the meds. We stopped using protection in October and got pregnant in November. Another reason that we waited was because my doctor wanted me to stop the med as soon as I found out I was pregnant. So, I used an ovulation kit and tracked my period (when I was supposed to start) to determine when I could test for pregnancy. I was only on the med while pregnant for about a week and a half which made me feel better for the baby's sake. Currently, I am 13 weeks. One month after stopping the Bromo, my prolactin level is up to 81. My baseline was in the 70's before diagnosis and meds so I am not surprised. I saw my endocrinologist yesterday and we are going to check my levels every month and get a MRI now to see if the tumor is growing. I have had an increase in headaches so we are being cautious. If you have any other questions, let me know!

Tiffany Jo- Thanks so much for that info. I was curious because my doctor wants to take me off of it as soon as I would become pregnant- but I've read that other doctors keep some people on it for the first 6 weeks. But- I will just follow orders! That's great that it helped you so quickly! Congrats! At first I was skeptical that taking this pill and bringing this level down will really help- but it seems to have helped so many. I just hope I'm as lucky!!

Tiffany Jo- thank so much for that info. Congrats on your pregnancy! What happens now that you are off of the bromo and your prolactin is rising? I know it's supposed to while pregnant but do you know if there is a limit? My doctor said to get off of it immediately if I would become pregnant- but I've read others are told to stay on it for the first 6 weeks. Again, thanks for your info! Brooke
