Hi Ladies, I have a long 4 years of experience trying to have a baby, and I hope I can save some of you from unnecessary infertility treatments. Four years ago, my husband and I started TTC. We were both 29 years old. After a year of no success, I went to a highly recommended Fertility Center in Los Angeles. The doctor did the basic tests and we were diagnosed with Unexplained Infertility. Under the doctor's recommendation we did 2 IUI's, 1 IVF, and when those failed, he suggested I do a ZIFT IVF (where they implant the embryo into your fallopian tube via laproscopic surgery). He recommended this for "better success rates". The ZIFT did yield a pregnancy, but I miscarried at 10 weeks. Something that was overlooked during this process was my cervix was REALLY tight. It made both the IUI and the IVF transer difficult (and in retrospect, I think it made my chances of success non-existant) I had a D&C, and 3 months later - on our first try - we got pregnant on our own! In fact I got pregnant 3 more times that year - like clockwork - on my own, but miscarried each time... my problem was now recurring miscarriages, which then my gyno suggested removing a small 2 cm fibroid. Eight months post op and I wasn't getting pregnant easily anymore. So fustrated, I asked to have a saline ultrasound done, where again I was faced with the ultra tight cervix that the technician could not get the catheter through. Finally, when the doctor forced it through, I felt for the first time what it feels like to have something go through my cervix!! I never felt that pain before when I did any of the IUI's and the IVF's, which tell me that the RE never actually got past my cervix into my uterus! (the second IVF was a ZIFT so the embryo was implanted straight into my fallopian tubes). It was like a light bulb went off --- The reason why I was getting pregnant after my first D&C is because the dr. had to dialate my cervix, which "loosened" it up! So, my doctor suggested having my cervix dialated right before ovulation... and I got pregnant! This pregnancy is looking viable and I can't believe I am here after all these years. To think, maybe I was not "infertile" in the beginning... I just needed my cervix dialated! Please.... before you do any ART, make sure your body is optimal condition. If I had my cervix evaluated and my uterus examined via hysteroscopy, I would not have gone through the heartache of ttc and 4 miscarriages!

Hello, It took me awhile to post, To this one. I am wondering if i have a similar situation. It is also good to hear the success story. Thanks for this post. It made me think about my situation. I have been trying for 6+ years. I have one daughter. Which she came by accident or maybe it was not. My situation is this. Back in 2000, I had to go in for a cone biopsy, Because i had abnormal cells on my cervix. Which turned out to be grade 2b cervical dysplaysia. So they did the cone bio, which they had to dialate me for, about 1-2 cm. Because they had to make sure that the dysplaysia wasn't all the way up in my uterus. Then they waited for results. after finding out what it was they did a leep procedure. Which they cut the tip of my cervix off. This was all done at the end of 1999-begining of 2000. I met my dh in june of 2000. I was pregnant by nov 2000. And have not sustained a pregnancy since then. My belief is that when they dialated me that it opened up my cervix. I was never pg before then and have not been able to get pg since having my dd. So thank you for your story it gives me hope!!!! I am making the arrangements to go see a doctor, So that i can be dilated. I don't know if that is my true problem or not but what can it hurt right? I have tryed everything outside of IUI and IVF that i can afford so here i go, Wish me Luck!!! and thanks again for this story. If i do get lucky and that is what my problem is then I will be so Elated! to just be pregnant it wouldn't matter what it was as long as it was healthy and no problems. I have been down a long hard road. And my patience was dwindling thin. Oh and Congrats on your PG!!!!! Jademaiden. Lots of luck to you!!!

That's a great story Jademaiden, thank you for sharing. It's funny I had the same problem with my cervix too. I had to have surgery to remove a fibroid from the lining of my cervix so when the dr tried to dilate it to do the hysteroscopic resection, it wouldn't dilate! They had all kinds of tools there trying to hold it open but they couldn't even pass the dilaters through. So they couldn't complete the surgery. When I had it again about a month later, the dr gave me mesoprostol to take (which is given to women who are miscarrying so that there cervix softens and opens) and the surgery went fine. This cycle I had an IUI and the dr again had slight difficulty getting the catheter in but I think he did manage to. But that thought has always been in the back of my mind - what if my cervix is just too tight to allow anything in? I will definitely ask my dr about it next time I see him. Thanks again.

Hi, saw this message today. Have a problem of too tight a cervix. Had laparoscopy on 28th of May, 2012 when previous 2 attempts at HSG failed. Doctor advised dilation of cervix and hysteroscopy. Later I was told (after laparoscopy)that even after anesthesia in an unconscious state, my cervix couldn't be dilated at all and hysteroscopy was attempted but it failed too as it couldnt not go past cervix. Checking tubal patency also was not possible due to this. I was diagnosed with minor endometriosis and was given lupride injection. had my periods on 9th June last and after that, did not have due to Lupride effect. Now the doctor has asked me to meet her after I get my periods so that HSG could be tried again. She says that my cervix is too tight, almost cemented. What are the options before me?

Sorry to hear your stories but i have a question. Does the gynocologist not find this problem when yall do your annual pap?

zenith - July 30

Hi Nikki

I did have pap smear test for the first time this year, I faced no pain either during insertion of speculum or during collection of sample. This problem could not be found then as it did not involve insertion of catheter.

Zenith - curious if a doctor was ever able to get past your cervix. I've had the same problem. I've had multiple doctors try (X-Ray tech, OB, and RE); the last attempt they game me cytotec before they put me under and they still could not get past my cervix.
