Anyone's DH ever see a urologist for abnormal semen analysis? What can be expected at this visit?

I'd love to answer...but Dh & I have our first appt next week for our less-than-perfect SA results (issues with morphology & motility) . I asked the receptionist, and she said the 1st appt will more than likely be a discussio with history and such. If I get done with our appt first, I'll post the info...please do the same!
Gl with everything! ~~Jen

I had asked a few others and was told that the doctor will do a health history and an exam. A man exam (ears nose throat, testicles, prostate...etc.) My husband said he won't go so I had to call my doctor. She doesn't want us to have to stop trying so she's trying to find a doctor who will do an iui without a urologists results. I'm crossing my fingers or we're done ttc. Can you let me know if they do a prostate check cause that's the only reason he won't go. Very manly and cautious about his rear being violated! LOL My DH has great count 124.1 but low viability (1/3 of them aren't doing much). Motility and volume a tad on the low end but she said nothing to worry about. So hopefully the doctors won't be too picky!

Hi again. Sorry i missed you...had to go thur the posts to the 2nd page to find this! Our appt is Thursday, and I will definitely let you know. I don't have DH's numbers. He had trouble in only 2 of the 7 areas - motility (like yours) and morphology (which is formation of the sperm "bodies"). So I guess we'll see on Thursday. I"ll definitely let you know though. Keep checking...it seems the more you post, the higher toward the top the blog goes...it's kind of frustrating. I post on Fertility Friend (just started) and on ivillage too...they are a bit easier to navigate...but support is great no matter how you get it. BTW, no chance you might be able to explain to you DH how important this is to you? :-) Maybe it'll make a difference. Gl my friend. :-) TTYL~~Jen

Unfortunately that's one thing I'd love to change about him...He doesn't want this as much as I do and if it were a toss up of a prostate exam to have a child or to never have a child...he'd go childless! I guess when I married him and we were already ttc I just didn't expect we'd have the bad luck of both of us having infertility issues. It just never crossed my mind. Hopefully my ob/gyn will find us a doctor who will go forward without that extra step. If my DH doesn't want to know what his issue is than I can't help that...but his results weren't that bad and I don't see what the big deal is about just moving to the iui's without the urology visit. His sperm count is GREAT and 82 million out of 124.1 sperm are pro swimmers so I just don't see the problem! My ob says an iui should do the trick but we'll never know if we can't get there!

Good news! The urologist was totally nothing...it took like 15 minutes from the time we sat down in the office. Dh had an exam, that was the normal guy thing (turn your head and cough)...nothing done to any other part of his body at all. He looked at our SA results and said there's no real reason to be concerned. We have 60 mil, and only 30% rapid progression, so I don't see why yours could be much different. Hopefully when you share this with him, you'll both feel better. The Urologist was nothing at all to be anxious about...hopefully you can get him to go! If not, hopefully your doc will find you what you need to get iui. GL and keep me posted! ~~Jen

Hi! my husband has male factor, low count, low motility. he had to see a urologist last yr. It was nothing! It was just an exam. We found out my husband has what's called vericocele, and that explains why the count is low. So tell your husband it's not invasive, it's straight forward exam, he will be fine. Good luck to you!

Hi autumnsmommy, my dh had his exam last week after a low simple analysis, and no rears were examined (lol). My dh wanted me there with him, so here is my perspective of the appt. We discussed health histories (both of our's), and then the doc took my dh to another room where he examined his "boys" and sized them. The doc suspects a varicocele, but set up a test plan for us - ultrasound, blood test for FSH, estradiol and testosterone, and two more analyses spaced 2 weeks apart. My dh is sensitive to ultrasound and claims he can feel vibrations, so that was the hardest part of all of this, for him. Best of luck to you, and lots of baby dust!

Hi, just thought I'd mention that my specialist is dealing with my dh poor analysis (low volume and motility) by putting him on a no drinking (and no smoking) regime with 500mg Vitamin C, 100mcg Selenium, 200iu Vitamin E and Zinc supplements. Having also researched this on the net it can make a real difference. My dh is being retested after two months on this regime. (started last week). Maybe if your dh still refuses to go AUTUMNSMOMMY then maybe he could try this for 3 months optimally and have a retest and see if its improved. If it has great. If it hasn't then maybe he'd reconsider the urologist. Good Luck!!
