PCOS and metformin

I'm 23. When i was younger I made sure that i went to college and had a job. saved some money did everything to make sure when i was ready to have a baby everything would be in order. well now i've been with my current boyfriend for almost 4 years and i just now felt comfortable to get off of my b/c pills after 5 years. that was in january. we've been trying since early march. no luck. the last three months my periods have had really long cycles in between. i got some blood work done and was diagnoised with pcos which is what the dr thought i had. it's kindof depressing. anyways i just started metformin to help me ovulate and hopefully get me pregnant while keeping my insulin levels normal. since only one of my levels were not normal i'm hoping i won't have to go on clomid and metformin at the same time. it's putting stress on my relationship and making me feel like i'm failing even though i'm not. has anyone had any suggest on 500mg of metformin? or has anyone had any better luck with both? i'm only 23 and didn't think i would have all these problems. thanks

I don't have any experience to share--but I'm starting Metformin next week (just found out I have PCOS) and we are coupling it with 100mg of Clomid--b/c I didn't respond to 50 mg of Clomid on my own. If time isn't an issue(you're 23) I'd stay on the Metformin a few months and see if your cycle regulates on it's own without the help of Clomid. Just my opinion.

I too was diagnosed with PCOS, and I'm 20. I haven't tried metformin yet, but I have a Dr's appt coming up soon in October and will definitely run it by my Doctor and see what she thinks. I am relieved to know that there are soooo many other women out there that have PCOS too! Good luck to all and tons of baby dust to everyone! :o)

HI I am 24 years old was diagnosed with pcos in July 2005 and started taking Metformin on 7th July 2005 I came off the pill in June 2004 and have been trying to conceive since then I was told to lose weight as its better than any tablets that they can give you have lost 1st 5lb so far which is great - I am waiting for an appointment to have a scan at the Polycystic Ovaries Clinic in Bristol, England was told it could be anything up to 17 weeks as its a routine referal from doctor i was also told that i will be having a laporoscopy aswell. Still waiting for period and appointment for scan if there is anybody else in the same position do you know how long it should take before a have a period since my last one was in March and I have a feeling that was just the pill getting out of my system - any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Louise---Wow..17 weeks seems like a long time, that clinic must be very popular. I just found out last month that I have PCOS. I did some bloodwork and gloclose testing this past week before I start the Metformin, but I don't have the results back yet. My periods range anywhere from 31-48 days. We decided to go to a specialist and he said that if I show no signs of ovulation (either temp rise or +OPK) then he'd start me on a medication to make me have a period--that way you shed your uterine lining and then we could begin Clomid to help induce ovulation. I took Clomid this cycle (50 mg) and did't have a response at the "normal" days of ovulation...but today is Cycle Day 31 and I had my first +OPK ever yesterday and this morning. So that's good news that I might be ovulating soon on my own b/c I haven't even started the Metformin yet...although I've already filled the Rx. Hope this helps and baby dust to all!!!

i was diagnoised with pcos last month. my periods also range b/w 33 to 47 days so i know i wasn't ovulationg. in august the dr put me on provera to jump start my period. that started on august 19th. lately i've been really sick to my stomach and my stomach is just achy. this is my second week on metformin and i don't like it. I haven't tryed the ovulation predictor tests since july b/c i never know when to test.

I finally heard back from the Dr today--I took my first dosage of Metfomin today and will eventually work up to 2000 mg. I will have a blood test 7dpo to confirm ovulation. and if we're not pregnant, then we will begin next cycle with 100mg of Clomid--Dr Rx Met + Clomid + IUI for best results and we're looking to get pregant fast before my DH goes back to school. I just bought a whole bunch of OPKs and I checked my cervical mucus everyday---when it got watery, I would test with OPK--usually always got negative result. This past weekend when I got +, I didn't believe it and I went out and bought another brand just to confirm it--it was + too. So I say do OPK when you have lots of watery or eggwhite cervical mucus, and I had some mucus earlier in month, but it all OPKs were negative so you can have multiple "fertile patches" in a cycle--hope this wasn't too much info and that it helps

I was wondering the same thing. I've gotten a few times where its really watery and clear thinking that there was at least twice that i may of been fertile. I haven't used test strips since july b/c i don't know when i ovulate. i always too got - results and since i was put on metformin 500mg once a day do i start counting from when provera made me bleed???? I've been really sick to my stomach lately over the past week or so. My sense of smell also got alot stronger. anything that's cooked or any cleaners i can smell them a mile away. I'm waiting to test for pregnancy till maybe this weekened.
