Anyone ever have a follicle of only 12mm at ovulation?

This is my first month w/out injectables in awhile. I didn't think I'd ovulate on my own but I noticed a drop in my temps w/ cramping. so today (day 15) I went to my RE for b/w and u/s. Turns out that I'm ovulating tonite... on my own! good for me but my lead follicle was only 11.5-12mm. I read this is called a small follicle and that I'll have a small chance of pregnancy. Does anyone have any ideas? anything positive ?!? I know 18mm is the follicle of choice, but I'll take what I can get.

From what I understand, that follicle is rather small. But that does not discount the fact that there could be an egg in there. Doctors like to see the follicle sizes on a medicated cycle at about 19-20+ and follicle sizes at 15-18 in a non-medicated cycle. But really pmblake, the fact that your estrogen levels are peaking and you are surging is very good, on your own! Pray that there is an egg in there! Good luck.

If you checked your follicle sizes early this morning, they could have still grown a bit, they average about 2 mm per day, so I would say you would be at least a 13 or 14 mm tonight/tomorrow morning. How is your endometrial lining?

thank you linds99! I needed to know those facts. I never knew what size was good or bad. well, I know when I have follicles at 20+ my RE is happy. So, I guess i know the odds aren't in my favor this cycle, but it's sure nice to have ovulated w/out a trigger shot. I'm going tomorrow for another progesterone check to make certain that I did ovulate today. Thanks again!

It was at an 11. You're referring to the stripe, right??

linds99 - October 17

Not sure what you mean about "stripe." I think that the endometrial lining (uterine lining where the egg implants) should be above 6 by the time you trigger anything more is awesome, so if you are saying you had 11, that is a nice and thick, blood engorged, uterine lining.

Good luck! Weirder things have happened, I wouldn't discount any cycle, especially when blood says you ovulated and it is backed up with an ultrasound. There is still a possibility that your egg was a quality one...after all, it was 'dominant'.

yum! sounds like it's ready! when i had the u/s this morning the lining (stripe) was the first thing he measured. I'm pretty certain they're the same thing - I've heard it called either. Great information Linds99. Are you in healthcare or just well researched? You seem to have alot of useful knowledge.

linds99 - October 17

Neither, I'm a journalist. So its in my blood to "read everything" and "research" everything. I have also been on medicated cycles the last four months...so I've been there, done that. Your lining sounds fantastic, when I did my trigger, mine was only about 7.5 or so. The clomid "wears it downs/thins it out." Lucky me.

pmblake - October 17

oohhh I didn't know Clomid caused that... is it permanent or just per cycle? i was also on my 4th injectable cycle. i was tired of it. I wasn't getting pregnant (sucessfully) and I was getting worried about long term side effects so I'm taking off until after the holidays. What are your plans?? any positive tests while on injectables?

linds99 - October 17

I think Clomid stays in the body for at least 60-days, so I would assume that the endometrial lining would be compromised for about 2-months thereafter. I understand your worries about long-term use of the injectionables. I read that Gilda Radner "used" them too and I am so afraid of ovarian cancer, despite the fact that the doctors all claim "there is not enough proof." I read somewhere that what is the most healthiest for a woman to do is get pregnant after using injectionables, soon after, because that regulates the hormones naturally. Pregnancy is sooo important to us women doing the meds because it gives our body a healthy break and exposes us to all the great hormones that regulates us and staves off sicknesses/diseases too. Risks for ovarian cancer actually increase for women who never get pregnant and took the meds.

To answer your question, I've not yet entered the realm of injectionables, as I am responding to the clomid, (I have PCOS and produce many follicles each month). I also have a hydrosalpinx in one tube and a patent clear one, so that is why, I assume, it is taking me longer to get my dream. I'm 29, how old are you?

pmblake - October 17

Boy you do know your stuff! and it's something that's always on my mind. I haven't researched it enough b/c I was thinking 3-4 cycles wouldn't cause any problems, but ovarian cancer really scares me so I'm going to be careful. I don't think RE's consider it enough. They just pump me full until i almost bust! and then start it over the next month. Well, I'll let you know what my progesterone shows tomorrow. Hopefully I'll get good news. What are you up to this month? Doing injectables?

linds99 - October 17

Let me know what your progesterone levels are tomorrow, I'm very interested whether they will be high or not, considering the size of the corpus luteum that would remain with a smaller follicle. Good luck again...I did clomid 100, metformin, HCG trigger shot, and two IUIs, I'm now taking progesterone suppositories to build up the lining. I'm on CD 5 today...

Sounds like you had a pretty intense cycle. I'm sorry it's not working out for you. Do you mind if I ask how old you are? I'm 39. okay, I will let you know when I know. After lunchtime I'm sure. East coast time. Thanks for sharing with me linds99.

oh Linds99 did I tell you that I had 6+ follicles at 10. Maybe those little guys will make it to 12 or so. Couldn't hurt.

pmblake, did you come back from the doctor's yet? Any confirmed ovulation?
