Hello,
I am currently taking Yaz- for about 4 years. I've stopped the birth control pills before and went a year without my cycle. I went back to my gyn and she prescribed me provera which i had to take for 4 days to make my cycle come on and after I got my cycle i had to start back on my Yaz to regulate my cycle. I was told that I dont have a regular cycle because of my prolactin levels -ranged from 50-90. I had an MRI-no tumor. I have been under the care of an endocrinologist for 4 years now. I have been on Bromocriptine for about three years and now my levels remain around 35, which is still not in the normal levels...i am so frustrated I am going for a second opinion but so far no help for me. I also took evening primrose oil, which someone recommended-this did not help either. I hate taking pills on a constant basis, but last time I stop the Bromocriptine my breast started producing mik...I dont even have any kids!

I know what you are going through. The Duke MD wanted me to take Bromocriptine. I even filled the prescription, but just couldn't take it after reading the side effects. I am on a ton of herbal supplements and weekly acupuncture. So far, no response. I will have my prolactin checked again this week.

I see so many posts about Dostinex being so great, but isn't anyone concerned about the fact that taking it for more than a short time has been shown to cause heart defects???

My high prolactin levels have been normalized with bromocriptine 2.5 mg every night. It regulated my cycles which were pretty non-existent before the bromocriptine.
I was lactating and that's when I learned that I was having pituitary issues rather than fertility issues.

I finally got tired of taking the Bromicriptine which had no effect and I started getting nauseous frequently. I stopped going to my endocrinologist and started researching alt natural methods. I started green smoothies everyday and started taking Maca root supplements. After about 4 months I started getting a period again... It had been so long I forgot what cramps felt like. I know that it is important to take a physicians advice but for me I couldn't stand the prescriptions and doctor visits anymore. I was under the care of an endocrinologist who could not regulate my cycle and was just fed up!

Hello again. It's been some months but no one has responded so I'm trying once more.

I have been tested twice now for prolactin levels. In August(ish) of 2013 it was 80 something. MRI didn't show a tumor. May of 2014 the level is still 79. I have not had a period for 4 months. I do not want kids at this point, just to fix this prolactin nonsense. I am scheduled to see an endocrinologist who is sure to want to put me on bromo or dostinex. I do not want to take either as BOTH are known to cause fibrosing (aka scarring) around the heart and other organs and Dostinex is known for causing heart valve problems.

Those of you taking these meds, are your doctors carefully monitoring for the scarring issue? The valve issue?

Anyone?

MauiKai -

I have been dealing with a high prolactin level for 5 years now. I saw an endocrinologist, and they suggested that I go on one of those meds. The doctor told me she had patients that had been on the meds for 20+ years, with no adverse side effects. I read about the long term effects and questioned her about it, but she just brushed it off when I was asked her. So, I refused to ever go on the drugs, and I am trying alternative treatments.

I have been on Tumeric for a few months now. There have been studies that show it can decrease prolactin. Also, Chaste Berry - but I didn't see any improvement with that herb.

Your health is ultimately in your hands, don't rely on the physician to know all the long term effects, because I've found they don't know. Read up on all the side effects/long term effects, and read through forums on what women have experienced with the drug. Please make a well informed decision.

My cousin had the same prolactin issue, and took Dostinex for 2 months. It made her sick, and she starting losing her hair. She quit it after 2 months, and was able to lower her prolactin enough to conceive.

My intuition says don't go there. So I am not going to take it.

Good luck!

Hi ladies, I have been in your shoes before. den127704 don't give up. I did not know anything about prolactin until I decided to start my family. Like most of you once I found out and I joined forums like this and spent countless hours doing research on the internet. I promised myself that if I became a success story I would return to these forums to provide hope to those still in the fight. My story is long and filled with different significant events.

I would love to share more of it but unfortunately I have homework I must complete. I am working on my PhD. If you guys want to know how my story turned out just look at my username. That being said, please ask me any questions you would like and I will try to answer them between homework. I know how important forums like this was to me when I trying to get pregnant.

A couple of weeks ago I got my second prolactin level of 85. So I have come full circle in dealing with prolactin levels. I never imagined there would come a time when I didn't care what my level is or if it every changes. I see another Endocrinologist on Friday. I haven't seen one in 18 years. My oldest son is 17 and my twins are 15. Yes, den127704 you can get pregnant with a prolactin level higher than 79. When I got pregnant with my first son and my twins I was still in triple digits.
