Does anybody know if low progesterone can cause you to spot before your period? I have almost a week of crazy brown dark red spotting before my period. I just lost a baby and I was told it could've been b/c I did have low progesterone.

Hi Jen. I'm sorry to hear about your recent miscarriage. I don't know much about progesterone, but I have definitely heard there could be a link b/twn brown spotting and low levels of progesterone. I found the follow passage from a website (http://womens-health.health-cares.net/
pregnancy-spotting.php):
"Abnorma
l
spotting lasts for days. It's abnormal to spot days before your menstrual cycle is due. The causes of abnormal spotting vary. One common cause of spotting several days before the menstrual cycle is due is low progesterone. It's the hormone progesterone that helps to maintain the uterine lining for pregnancy and when progesterone level drops, the menstrual cycle occurs. In women who are deficient in progesterone, they will see spotting several days to a week before their cycle is due. This can also cause minor infertility and early miscarriage"

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Have you had your levels tested? I have been on prog. with both of my kids and I am on it now (3 doses a day) ttc for #3. Taking it vaginally will give you a better absorption rate.

Thank you so much for the info. I did take prometrium twice a day, but I didn't start until I was 4 weeks. I think it was too late. I'm supposed to have my levels checked once my cycle goes back to normal. I just have a gut feeling that they will be low. I've always spotted like crazy throughout the month at any random moment!

SAME HERE. I'M ALSO VERY MOODY DURING THAT TIME. I WOULDN'T BLAME MY HUSBAND IF HE WANTED TO DIVORCE ME DURING THAT WEEK OR 2.

progesterone suppositories, pills, have to be started a day or 2 after iui or I think the day of an ivf for it to be of any help in helping with the pregnancy. You are right 4 weeks would have been too late to start it and have it do anything.
