IVF - how soon can they tell how many "took?"

I'm having IVF done at the end of October, and I was wondering, if it's successful, how soon can they tell how MANY embryos were successful? Because I'm under 30, they're only putting 2 back. My DH is asking how soon we would know if it's twins or one. I appreciate any feedback - thanks!

Hi kel- I'm doing ivf at the same time as you. Did you take bcp's too? I had to take them for 21 days. I'm on Lupron now and when af shows I'll be on a bravelle/menopur cocktail injectible. I believe once you get your bfp they will call you in for b/w and u/s and they will tell you your numbers from the b/w and they should be able to see the lttle blobs. Have you been diagnosed with anything that has determined you to be infertile? DH is the infertile one, I have 2 kids already. My re said he will transfer 2 as well and bec I am 32 with 2 kids, they both should stay.

they will usually have you come in for your first u/s with the RE at 7 weeks pregnant. it is then that you will know if you have twins or a singleton or whatever. they usually won't see you before then, since they want to wait until at least 7 weeks usually to see (not hear) the h/b. we saw our singleton from IVF at 7 weeks. he is due in 2 weeks! so you will know you are pregnant, but won't know how many for a few weeks at least after your beta.

Tink - October 14

BAby- they will give you your b/w #s, but they won't do an u/s at your beta. it won't be for weeks later- they just won't be able to see anything that early- hence waiting til 7 weeks or so usually. sometimes 6 weeks sometimes 8 weeks. just depends on your RE. they don't want to bring you in too early and not be able to see very well and get you all worried for nothing.

If I'm n ot mistaken, by the time you find out you are preggers, you are about 6 weeks, right? Do they still count from the day of your lmp? I'm sure they don't for VF though, I know that protocol is different.

ROBYN - October 14

SHON - you are 4 weeks pregnant when you get a bfp with IVF. Date of conception is the date of the retrieval thats how they count the pregnancy they dont use a LMP. You dont get an u/s till your around 6 weeks so they can see if there is a h/b. Also i dont want you to take this the wrong but just because they transfer 2 embryos does not mean that both will take i transferred excellent quality embryos all grade A stage 1 on the 1st IVF one took and we got pregnant the 2nd IVF was 3 excellent frozen blasts and one took so until they retreive the embryos and fertilize them and transfer them if you get pregnant theres no way to know if more than one took. I already have a son and in excellent health my RE never said he felt both would take or all 3 would take because i have a child before is it a possibility yes of course it is but its really not a definite science if one or two or if any will take.

Thank you both for the feedback - babyforcole, I have PCOS, although I have none of the other symptoms other than the polycystic ovaries. I'm thin and have no insulin resistance issues, etc... Yep, I took bcp, got AF and just started yesterday on Gonal-F and Menopur (with less Lupron that when I started that). I can definitely feel the hormones working! Tink...I found you! If you look back at the subjects in the forum, I was trying to find you "Tink...are you there?" I was trying to get your story because I saw something you posted and was curious - look back and see. Anyway, since I'm "high risk" my RE said that they would be monitoring me with u/s every week, not just at 6/7 weeks.

babyforcole - October 14

Oh ok, thanks Robyn. No I didn't take anything the wrong way. I'm just confident and hopefully I won't be wrong. Without getting too much into it, I am quite fertile that's why I was surprised I didn't get preggers with Cole but now I know, it's bec of his sperm count. As long as I get at least one, i'll be blessed. I feel alittle light headed this afternoon. Has anyone felt like that on Lupron?

kelsmi - October 14

Yes, I did notice that - I tend to get a little dizzy from time to time anyway b/c I have low blood pressure, but on the Lupron, I had swaying moments every now-and-then!

SHON - i hope you get twins (better you than me ) LOL i was scared to death that several of these blasts would take this time i was so happy only one took. Did your doctor have you sign a bunch of consent forms about the possibility of multiples? My betas were very high in the beginning but my RE said i only believe its one and its a strong implanter and he was right. SHON - i had a little symptoms with the Lupron but mainly bcps i got violent headaches once i incorporated the Lupron they subsided. KELSMI - i got u/s too every 2 weeks till they released me to the OB and i have had numerous since i have had a few scares here and there so i get them when i want plus i also see a perinatologist he did all the testing to make sure there was no downs syndrome or cystic fibrosis all that kinda testing so we go back to him on Halloween just for a routine u/s. I wish you luck on your IVF.

Robyn, how long did you have to take the PIO? I signed so many consents- multiples and then the freezing....I am really surprised my insurance co is paying for that. They will freeze and store them for a year but trust you me, if I have twins I won't need them. I'm ONLY happy with twins bec I'm home all day as a provider and dh works nights so he can help during the night when he gets off since he usually doesn't go to bed until about 3 am anyways. But please believe, if I had to get up in the morning and dress 2 babies and drop them off at day care or somewhere then run to work, I'd be praying for one if any and I'd be beggin dh to get a nanny. lol....

ROBYN - October 14

Shon - i had to do the PIO for 12 weeks till the placenta kicked in. Thats my REs protocol. You are SOOOOO lucky that they are covering even the freezing we had to pay 2000 to freeze our embryos for 6 months man you just dont realize how lucky you are actually i am sure you do considering how many of us you talk to. I am staying home that was the agreement with hubby when we started this last year. I dont know if you know i was at my job at police dept for 17 years and after the loss in Feb he said no more stress your done. I said no problem and now its just a part time thing for me at my conveience. I work like maybe 3 or 4 times a month back at the police dept. But yeah i would want a nanny too I hope you get whatever you have wished for. I honestly dont think my body could have handled more than one baby at a time.

babyforcole - October 14

Wow, 17 years at one job....Congrats. And you're technically still an employee so at least you didn't loose your pension. You weren't an officer were you? I have a day care assistant so trust me when I say I'll be taking it as easy as possible. I closed the day care for 2 days estimating I get the transfer done between the 2-3 on Nov. How long were you on the stims before retreival? I'm thinking i'll be on them for the 12 days since I responded normally to the 100mg. RE wanted me to develop more than one embie. I even saw that some people had more than one on 50mg....Wow, 3 months on PIO....I'm not looking forward to that part of it. How soon after transf did you test? I'm going to try to wait the what, 10 days? But I dunnnnno...Yes, I am truly blessed and appreciative for the insurance that we have, trust me. I have a friend who's insurance covers 80% but that 20% is still expensive for them. I'm sure you know how blessed you are to be able to afford to pay for this out of pocket. I keep looking at the cutest little baby shoes, awwww. And trying not to buy any...lol

Tink - October 15

good luck Kelsmi!! SHON- i wanted twins badly too.....so just a warning- don't get yourself all worked up about having twins. it doesn't happen for everyone. i was hoping for it and was sorely disappointed when i had a singleton only. don't get me wrong, i am so so blessed with one. just don't want you to be disappointed as well if you have these expectations. although we hear about lots of twins from IVF, there are many more singletons. so just be careful with your expectations. and really i am glad now that i don't have twins- it would be a ton of work and ton of expense----two cribs, two swings, double the insurance, double the diaper costs etc. etc. At my age, it would just be a lot to handle, so I think God knew what he was doing! Like Robyn- i put in 2 excellent blastocysts (day 5) and only one took. so you really never know. on the PIO- i only took it for about 2 weeks. at my beta, my progesterone was at 110!!!! so i was super high and got to stop progesterone completely. KEL- that is great you get more monitoring- just be prepared if you go in at 5 or 6 weeks, you might not see a h/b yet. doesn't mean anything, it is just very early. by 7-8 weeks, you should see it and everything will look great. Lupron- gave me horrible headaches. Baby- i was on stims for 9 days. on average most people are on stims for about 10 days i would say. good luck girls!

ROBYN - October 15

SHON - when i left in March i had no choice but to take the retirement with me since i was a general employee not an officer we dont get to retire and 20 years i would have had to give an additional 18 years of employement to get to 55 and there was no way i could do that. So i was a traffic crash investigator and a dispatcher i also did Crime Scene investigation. I did have to go to the academy but we were like cops with no guns i could write tickets and handle not in progress crimes but not a cop. So now when i go back its dispatching that i do. But we had to take all my earnings and put them in an IRA when i left. As for me with the stims i responded very well as was only on them for about 7 or 8 days and that actually moved up my retreival date 5 days earlier. Now that was the 1st IVF. The 2nd IVF i didnt have to do anything like that since it was an FET. Now as for the PIO remember every RE does things differently like Michelles progesterone was skyrocketed like she said and there is no reason to keep her on the progesterone like that but it wasnt because mine was low or high it was what my RE felt was best for his patients i also had to do prometrium suppositories everyday as well i would do the PIO in the morrning, take 400mg of prometrium and night vaginally and 200mg orally. As for testing with embryos on the 1st IVF i tested at 9 days past the transfer 12 days past the retrieval and got a bfp. On the 2nd IVF with the frozen blasts i tested at 4 days past the transfer and got a BFP there arent and stimulation or hcg injections involved so it was very accurate.

babyforcole - October 15

oh ok, thanks Robyn. Well, we'll see. I'm just going with the flow at this point. Waiting for af to come so I can do the u/s and b/w to start the stims. I'm hoping my progesterone goes high too so I don't have to take that oil, wow. Or at least if I get a bfp he can swtch me to the vaginal pills. He said they aren't suppositories, they're actually pills like aspirin. Have you seen those?

babyforcole - October 15

Robyn, do you think being home helped your pregnancy this time?
