Found out SA results today-low sperm count

my husband and I have been TTC for 8months now. We finally went in for SA and found out today that his sperm count is low (20million) but motility, morphology, etc are normal. Is anyone else in a similar situation? What are the next steps to take? What kind of treaments are out there? Did anyone get pregnant with similar low sperm count naturally? Any information/advice would be greatly appreciated.

I've read that 20 million is normal. I guess some labs and clinics are diff. Think about iui. I don't have any experience there but there are some other forums on here that do.. Good luck.

20 million is usually classed as normal on World Health Organisation guidelines so I wouldn't worry about those results. I'd keep trying naturally for a while longer (anything up to 2 years) then you could try IUI or IVF but you should be able to conceive naturally. 8 months isn't that unusual. Good luck. We had severe male infetility (everything was low) (3 years ttc unsuccessfully) and had to do IVF with ICSI but I wouldn't have thought you'ld need to do that on those results. It worked first-time and I now have a baby.

LC, my dh doesn't have issues, but I've heard of other couples on the board with much lower counts. With 20mil you could probably take some steps to try to increase his count naturally (since 20 mil isn't extremely low). See this site for "life factor" things that your dh can do/not do: http://www.fertilitext.org
/p4_male/life_factors.html
Hope this helps!

Thanks for your responses. His results fortunately aren't extremely low, but they are still low...so it will be more difficult for us to conceive naturally..but there is hope!
Thanks for the website info, Ann. I have DH on some supplements, but may add a few especially Vit E.

my hubby just got back from work..i had not seen the actual results from the SA he just called me and told me that the only concern the doctor had was that the count was low but the results show different than what she told him:
volume 3.4 (1.5-5.0)
pH 8.0 (7-8.3)
motility 1hr <10% normal >60
motility 3hr <10% normal>60
morphology 5% normal >60
count 26mil/ml normal (60-150)

when i read these results I see that the morphology is low, motility is low and count is low....I don't understand why she didn't explain this to my husband. I will call tomorrow.
any thoughts/advice would be great...thanks

Hi!
I think something is wrog with this results. 26mil/ml is a very normal count, and with volume 3.4 makes it more tha enough. Check the motility, that is important, if it is 10% that is not good. The guys need to swim. Don't wory about morphology, there is a lot of controversy and if it is strict kruger it is fine they like it's more than 4%. I read about people on message boards with perfect SA parameters with 4% that needed IVF. I read about that morpology can't be improved, that all is not true. They simply don't know. We concieved with 2% morphology, his morph. varied fro 8% strict Kruger to 2% strict Kruger.

Hi LC and everyone else. My dh has a count of 13 million and I don't know what we are going to do. Isn't there some vitamins that can help? Will we be able to conceive child natually with this count? Everything else looked good.

Laura - February 9

Just to let you know I got pregnant and my husband has a lower sperm count than that with poor morphology too-I said lots of prayers and it happened-I would say you had a good chance!

Chas - February 9

Thanks Laura

dee - February 13

Laura, what was the morphology %? And you got pregnant naturally? Just curious. My dh has motility and morphology issues. Going for IUI tomorrow. How long were you trying?

LC-I think I have chatted with you before on here. I recently have been feeling down, and I was looking for a success story regarding low sperm count. A few people on here pointed out that I am a success story. My husband and I conceived naturally 20 months ago, and now we have a beautiful, healthy toddler. We have been trying now for 12 months with no luck. We went to dr, and DH had SA done. The results were so much worse than yours. He only has 2 million. We were able to conceive, and we didn't even know that the count was so low. I don't really have advice because now we are struggling too, but anything is possible. We are just changing our lifestyle...lots of water, cut back on caffeine, exercise, and that sort of thing. He is also starting vitamins and a few supplements from GNC. 50mg Pycnogenol and L-Carnitine 500mg. If you go to the website there a a ton supplements.

EMM - February 15

I also found this when I was searching. I will paste the whole thing.

* Arginine - Take 4 gr daily. Needed to produce sperm. If the sperm count
is below 10 million per ml, arginine probably will not provide any benefit.
* Coenzyme Q10 - Take 10 mg daily. Increases sperm count and motility.
* Flaxseed oil - Take 1 tbsp daily. Is a source of essential fatty acids.
* L-carnitine - Take 3-4 grams daily. Required for normal sperm function.
* Multivitamin-mineral - Buy a high-quality product and take one serving
size (differs from brand to brand).
* Selenium - Take 200 mcg daily. Improves sperm motility.
* Vitamin B-12 - Take 1000 mcg daily. A B-12 deficiency reduces sperm
motility and sperm count. Even if no deficiency exists, B-12 supplementation
may help men with a sperm count of less than 20 million per milliliter or a
motility rate of less than 50%
* Vitamin C - Take 500 mg 2 times daily. Is an antioxidant.
* Vitamin E - Take 400 IUs 2 times daily. Is an antioxidant and improves
sperms' ability to impregnate.
* Zinc - Take 30 mg 2 times daily. Required for a healthy male reproductive
system and sperm production.

EMM-thanks for all of the vitamin and dosages. We had a second SA done which was worse than the first (7million with low morph and motlity)...but he had less days between abstinence only 2 instead of 4. At the time it had been about 2 months of vitamins..so may have not been enough to help yet. We have an appt with the RE march 1st. anxious to hear what they have to say and to get moving on this. It is nice to her about your story with your first baby. I wonder if sperm counts can fluctuate in man's life? how long had you been trying with your first? At this point I am ready to just go to IVF. I don't think IUI has much hope for us. But it will be a while before we even have IVF since it take a while to get an appt and then to even start. So in the meantime we will continue to try and I am sure we will get another SA in a month or so to see if it improves.
keep in touch.

LC- Baby #1 was a surprise. Isn't if crazy how it works that way. We were ready for a child, so it was great. But, now that we are trying for number two it is just like it will never happen. We are still waiting on the doc to call for a followup ultrasound appointment for DH. Keep me posted!

LC - February 21

hello all of you with male factor infertility...it is nice to talk to you all. Anything new with anyone..Chas, EMM? we got my hubby's blood test back...everything is normal. According to the urologist the next step is another SA in 2 months. Our first appt with the RE is getting closer (next week)...I am anxious to go and find out what they have to say and get things moving along. keep in touch.
