FOOD to eat or not to eat...

I have read a ton of stuff saying not to eat this and that, but a lot of lists contradict eachother or leave things off. I'm TTC, in my 5th month trying. So I've cut down on caffeine and after I ovulate, I try to eat like a pg woman should...that's where this posting will come in handy! What have you all heard is ok/not ok?

What a great topic!!! Cheese is always a hot topic for debate. I've heard any non-pasturized cheese is a no go, but if it is a pasturized cheese (like Goat Cheese) then it's okay.

Yup, I've heard that too about cheese. Brie is a no no. I'm confused about yogurt, anyone know? I have heard no aspartame so that rules out "light" yogurts.

Here's what my OB/GYN told me at my first prenatal appointment: Have only one serving of fish or shellfish per week, because of mercury, and avoid swordfish, shark, and king mackerel altogether. Don't eat cheeses made from unpasteurized milk (these are usually softer cheeses like bleu cheese, gorgonzola, feta, etc.). If you eat meat from a deli or from a restaurant such as Subway, make sure it's heated to 165 degrees to avoid risk of contamination with listeria. She also said it's okay for me to have one cup of coffee every morning if I avoid caffeine for the rest of the day. Also, make sure that all meats are cooked well (i.e., be sure that steak and ground beef are well done). I've also heard that you should avoid soft-serve ice cream, such as Dairy Queen or Carvel, but I don't know whether or not that's true.

I've heard yogurt is okay b/c it is pasturized. I've never heard that soft serve is a no-no. That's interesting if it's true.

Andie, I'm pretty sure that yogurt's fine as long as you don't eat the light yogurt that contains aspartame. In fact, I told my doctor that I'm eating a lot of yogurt, and she said that's good because it has calcium and protein.

My RE nurse told me to just use common sense. She wasn't much help. When I asked about taking Advil for headaches she said no, only Tylenol. To me, common sense is to take Advil for my headache. I guess the take away from it is too just eat healthy and keep everything in moderation. I wish she was more helpful. Any other foods to avoid?

This might be really dumb of me...but I use cooking wines a lot (red, white, sherry) and I know this has alcohol...is this bad to use?

You should also limit your meats like bacon, sausage, lunch meat etc. They have nitrites in them and that is bad. Pepperoni too.

Usually in cooking, you burn off the alcohol that is in the wine. However, since it is still alcohol, when in doubt, don't do it or ask your dr. Good question!

Hi all- I've heard so many of these issues. My biggest thing is: do NOT take any medication (even OTC) w/o checking with dr. first. Food- eh-- my mom made it through a healthy pregnancy and many generations before her. Not that I want to eat the wrong thing and harm a baby. Just something to consider/think about. For conceiving: I do basically what I want. I tried to be a good girl but after a year and no pregnancy- it gets tough. I even stopped my pre-natal vitamin because they are a bit pricey. Now I have a stash on hand when they are officially "needed". Just my opinion.

I heard that bacon is a no no because of the high levels of nitrates.

My doctor confirmed today that decaf coffee is fine to drink. Herbal teas are to be avoided.

Hi Andie, i've been ttc for a couple of years now and i was also put onto Clomid and ended up taking 10 rounds of that and had no success which then made me start thinking about the foods i was eating and whether i was eating right and i tried to eat properly but i'm a big sucker for carbs and chips so i've tried to maintain a healthy diet but its too hard, i mean i do try to eat a couple of pieces of fruit a day but i only eat vegies a couple of times a week which is pretty bad and i also eat alot of cheese in my lunchs during the week. I'm just not bothered anymore, i'm still taking a vitamin and i'm also on Vitex so hopefully fingers crossed. I've got an appt with my specialist next Jan 06 and i think she wants us to start doing AI but i'll c how we go this next month. Good luck to you! baby dust! :)
