endometriosis and lupron depot

Hi Ladies-
I'm 32 years old and married my high school sweat heart 5 years ago. Although we have been together for 18 years we have only been married for 5. We started trying to get pregnant shortly after we got married. After countless efforts and a ton of money spent on ovulation kits we became frustrated and went to see a fertility doctor to run tests to find out what the issue was. We learned I had endometriosis. I had laprascopy surgery in October of 2007. After my surgery I found that my endo was so bad that I had it on on my bladder, uteris and bowel. My doc also found 2 chocolate cysts, one on each ovary and 2 other cysts she had never seen before which went to biopsy after my surgery and came back ok. Due to the severity of the endometriosis I had to follow-up with 3 months of lupron depot shots. The night sweats and hot flashes were no fun but I just finished up my last shot the first week of January. I am now waiting for my cycle to start. Does anyone know typically how long it takes to get your period back and possibly how long it may take us to get pregnant? My doctor wanted us to try IVF right away but I really feel I want to try a few months before I throw 15K out the window. It's very expensive and frankly, we can not afford it. I would love to hear more feedback from anyone in a similar situation.

Hi Ladies-
It's so nice to see the support system out there for us.
I'm 32 years old and married my high school sweet heart 5 years ago. We have been together for 18 years, married 5 and I always thought we were lucky to not get pregnant until we started trying 5 years ago. My doc also found two chocolate cysts, one on each ovary and two other cysts she had never seen before which went to biopsy after my surgery and came back ok. Due to the severity of the endometriosis I had to follow-up with 3 months of lupron depot shots. The night sweats and hot flashes were no fun but I just finished up my last shot the first week of January. It's almost 2 months since my last shot and I'm still having night sweats and an occassional headache. I also have had a couple dizzy spells but reading the forum I see someone else has had the same side effect. I am now waiting for my cycle to start. My doctor wanted us to try IVF right away but I really feel I want to try a few months before I throw 15K out the window. It's very expensive and frankly, we can not afford it. I guess it's now the waiting game for my cycle to start and then hopefully we will get luck in the next few months. Good luck everyone!

Hi Kimn I know exactly where you are coming from and hw you feel, my husband and I have been ttc for 4 years now, in june of 07 ihad surgery to remove to golf ball size cysts on both ovaries when they went in they found that I had stage 4 endo the worst my doctor had ever seen, everything was covered, I took the lepron injections for 6 months and finished up in november of 07 al thru the shots I had irregular bleeding which was unusual according to the doctor so i don't know what to think, I got my first real period about two months later and it was horrible heavy bleeding and bad pain, my dr. doesn't really know whats wrong so i guess i will just have to wait and see what happens.

kimn if you are going to try ivf the best time to do it is after the laser surgery or after a round of lupron because that is when you will have the least amount of endo and when the endo is the least active because the lupron stops it's growth. so maybe this is why your dr suggested this.... the good news is that if you have only gone through 3 mos of lupron you can always do another dose of either 3 mos or 6 mos if you do change your mind or decide to do the ivf in the future. The bad part which i know all too much about is when the endo is on organs such as your bladder they cannot laser it off due to the high risk of damaging the organ.... that is where the lupron comes in, in most cases the lupron will shrink the endometriosis that they cannot remove with the laser during surgery... i was on lupron injections 4 separate times but each time i got my period back within the next two weeks after stopping the shot... but everyone is different... good luck

Treneice - March 1

Hello, I am 43 years old and desire to conceive a baby with my husband of four years. I learned in 2001 or 2 that I had fibroids. They were removed January 14, 2008 by laparascopic myomectomy procedure. Afterwards, my doctor informed me that there was quite a bit of endometrosis as well. He removed what he could but told me both my fallopians tubes were also blocked and he suspect endometrosis, which also indicate why I have not been able to conceive, thus far. My doctor recommended Lupron Depot to me since I am still interested in having a baby. He said the Lupron will not dissolve the endometrosis inside my fallopian tube, but it will treat it, whatever that means. After treatment, I will still need to do Invitro Fertilization (IVF). Currently, I do not have the money for IV. My biggest concern in taking Lupron is that I will not get my period back because of my age and that it may through me into early menopause. Is there anyone who has experienced a similar condition that could offer more insight on whether Lupron would be advantageous at my age and for conception?

Treneice, I am 42(or will be in a couple weeks) I just had the 6 mos. of Lupron injections also to shrink the endo. What your Dr. means by treat it is that it will shrink. It won't go away but it should shrink. I just finished my Lupron in November of 2007. Rather than wait for my period to come back on it's own, I asked my Dr. to give me something to get it started because I didn't have time to waste. He gave me a progesterone shot to get it started back and within a couple of weeks or so I started. I am now ttc. I understand your fear of going into early menopause I had the same fear but it did not happen. And the only real side effects I had was hot flashes and they started going away after a few months into the shots. I don't think your dr would prescribe the Lupron to you if he thought that you were too close to menopause. I don't think you have to worry about that but you should discuss your concern with your Dr. I hope this works for you. Good Luck.

I wish I had this forum 4 months ago! I am on my 4th shot of lupron. I am still getting my period. This past month is lasted 19 days! I am feeling depressed, hot flashes everyday, nausa, migraines, this really is the worst medication I have ever been on! Anyone else experiencing this?

lisnel - March 4

cthorpe, did your dr mention anything about an add back therapy? There is some kind of add back that the dr can give you to add a few hormones back and maybe you won't feel so bad. You might want to ask your dr about it. Good luck hope you feel better.

cthorpe - March 6

yes, I did and they gave me a hormone, that didn't seem to help and now I am taking premerin. Hopefully it will start to help with the side affects. Thanks! My next (#5) shot is on Monday. I'm not looking forward to it, but only 2 months left!

Kimn, my last lupron shot was on November 26th and I got my first period back on March 2. I too have endo on my bowel, bladder, uterus, ovaries, etc. etc. and had surgery in May 2007. I do the ovulation kits and I ovulated two weeks after my period and will see the results soon! I am not going to do IVF and have no intentions on it so I will let you know how trying to conceive without will go. Trying to conceive without treatment is also the best after surgery/lupron so best of luck to you. Let me know how things are going with you.

I am 25 years old and have struggled with endo since I was in my teens. I had my first and only child at 18. Since I was told that may never be possible I was thrilled, even though I was so young. I am now married and just took my last shot of lupron. I have been on lupron twice. The first time was so bad and there were no positive results. None of my pain went away and the side effects were too much to handle. I then at 23 begged for a hysterectomy. The doctors (gyn and fertility specialist) said I had to be at least 25 before they would do it. So 3 months before my 25 birthday I went to schedule my surgery. At that time the doctor told me to try lupron one last time. It worked! Yes I had the night sweats, couldn't sleep, irritable at times but I was not in PAIN! So I had two injections and then as I would get close to the week I was suppose to get another injection my pain would come back. Almost like someone had an ice pick and was sticking me. So my doctor put me on one 3.75 mg injections of Lupron every three weeks. I was one it from March 2007 until I took my last shot about 6 weeks ago. Now pain is already back and I begged to be put back on Lupron. I know later in life this may cause problems but right now I need something to help. I have a seven year old and I am married, working full time and attending school. I don't have time to feel like a 90 year old woman. My doctor said now is the time to decide to try to have a baby and see what happens or have the major hysterectomy..... I wonder if anyone else out there has been on lupron for so long? I had arranged for a RN to give the shots to me to avoid going to the DR. office every three weeks andso I think maybe between that and the shots we delivered to my house the doctor didn't keep up with exactly how long I was on lupron.... I wonder how long should you wait to try to a baby after lupron! I am a little afraid of doing that because after I had my daughter I had so many more problems. I have had 5 laps, dnc, bladder and hysteroscopy in the last 4 years..... Long bumpy road and I would like to enjoy my younger years....

marazul - June 19

I started my lupron shots in December 07. On December one shot for one month, January one shot good for 3 months, on April the 3rd shot good for 3 months. Surgerey myomectomy for July. Had I known that I was going to spend time in hell I would have not taken it. First month I bled for 12 continuous days which gave me severe anemia. After that the major depression I've endured with continuous thoughts of suicide have made me suffer soooo much, even with a normal dose of antidepressants didn't get much better. The hot flashes were annoying but I could endure it, but the anxiety and the depression was so overwhelming that I should have decided to get a hysterectomy. Hopefully after all the suffering my doc will save my uterus. I would never recommend to somebody who has tendency for depression to take this. You never know what you may end up doing to end that suffering from the depression. Mine was for fibroids.
