I have had the brown spotting 1 day prior to AF for the past few months while TTC. I went to my OBGYN because I had some of the same concerns as many of you have. She said it is normal and nothing to worry about. I didn't get blood levels checked or anything though. Wish I had...cause I still wonder. I recently moved, so I will need a new Dr. so I am anxious to get another opinion, hope to go this month.

Hello. Its really funny-I have been reading this site for ages and no-one menitonned brown spotting so i thought it was just me. Merlee-I was worried about too much estrogen in case it was causing a hormone imbalance and preventing regular ovulation. I read all sorts about the cause of brown spotting which got me in such as state but when I saw the fertlity specialist(who was lovely) he suspected it might be endrometial polys which he was not overly concerned about but definitely said it would not affect conception and that there are many myths about it. My brown spotting has been sonce coming off birth control (so about 2-3 years and it lasts 3-7 days prior to my perios (which is about 3-4 days red) and then a few more days brown spotting. I was told not to worry. Getting blood levels checked is prob a good idea though if you are worried. I have had three 21 day progesterone tests-two said i did not ovualte that cycle and 1 said i did. I was told it is possible that the others might have been taken on the wrong day. The advice I got was not to try to guess oulation and to have sex mid cycle but to do it regularly throughout my cycle.

I also have the spotting before AF - anywhere from 1-5 days of it then AF for 2-4 days. I was wondering if any of you have been told to count your spotting as the first day of your cycle or to wait and count the first day of AF as your cycle? I started clomid this month - day 3-5 - and was told to count the spotting, then spotted for seven days (unusal) before starting AF which started on day 5 of my clomid pills. Maybe I should count from first day of AF??? Does anyone know when to start counting with spotting before AF????

I would count the first day of your actual flow, BUT, I spot about 4 to 6 days before a/f then I have nothing until I am due to have a/f so my spotting occurs about half to 3/4 of the way into the luteal phase, ceases, then I get ,my a/f on time. Only thing is I have been getting severe PMS before my a/f these past 2 months and major cramping and heavy flow the first day only which my GP said is a sign of ovulation. I don't know who or what to believe now, it could be so many different things and the doc won't send me to a ob/gyn for another 3 months. Welcome to Canada.
