My Dr put me on Provera for one month to regulate my cycle as it was all over the place. We had been ttc for over a year. Well I took it when he told me, 10 mg/day for 7 days that ended Dec 26. My AF never came (due today or so) and I got a BFP on a HPT this am. I read that the Provera can cause birth defects.anyone have any experience with it? thanks

Sissy, I took Provera a time back and I took HPTs and they came out positive...and I called my dr. and found out after 3 ultrasounds 1 transvag. ultrasound and blood test that I wasn't in fact after one month and I still didn't get my AF and still neg. pg tests...I tried to test again with a pee stick and found out it came out neg. so, dr. just gave me another round of Provera and about 3 days after completing it all I actually finally had my period. You are right about birth defects but, I think if it's that early on the pg. then it's either "all or nothing"....during that time between 1-4 weeks. the baby has barely divided into muliple cells and attached itself to the wall of ur uterus...but, if ur really concerned about being actually pregnant...then take a test every other day for the next week or two weeks until ur AF comes or until you get a BFN or better yet call the dr. ask to do a blood test and therefore you won't have to wait that long for results and maybe he/she can give you another round of Provera. Rarely but it does happen , that one round of Provera doesn't work so maybe you need another round. Or you may have blocked tubes and he needs to do an ultrasound and run some tests on you to check cause that could be another reason why you didn't have AF...but, since you already mentioned Provera was Rx due to ur cycle being erratic then I doubt ur tubes are blocked. Wish all the best of luck to you....and hope you get the answers your looking for...good luck!

Never updated so thought I would, my hcg came back positive and I am now 7 weeks 2 days. Dr is not concerned with me having taken provera, he thinks it is what helped this baby stick! We had an U/S 5 weeks 5days and there was a sac and fetal pole with a heartbeat of 111.My HCG levels have risen right along and all looks good!

just curious--what is provera for---what does it help to regulate ?

Provera is derived from the female hormone progesterone. You may be given Provera if your menstrual periods have stopped or a female hormone imbalance is causing your uterus to bleed abnormally. Provera is also prescribed to prevent abnormal growth of the uterine lining in women taking estrogen replacement therapy.

Other forms of medroxyprogesterone, such as Depo-Provera, are used as a contraceptive injection and prescribed in the treatment of endometrial cancer.

Some doctors prescribe Provera to treat endometriosis, menopausal symptoms, premenstrual tension, sexual aggressive behavior in men, and sleep apnea (temporary failure to breath while sleeping).

I was given it to regulate or jumpstart my periods as they had went a little wacky went from 30 days to 45 then 21 days then 27...I got pregnant the next motnh when he had me take the provera during the 7 days proceeding my ovulation time...I think the extra dose of progesterone helped.
