Success stories with IUI and injectibles

Wow Cheryl, sorry it is so high. i am in dallas and seeing one of the best RE's in TX. my first injectable cycle (this one!) only is costing me $65. i just found out my IUIs are covered by my ins, unfortunately we are changing ins in january, and i'll lose that benefit, so i only get in like 2 more free IUIs. i've submitted claims for the 2 i've already done, just waiting on payment. They don't cover my drugs though. Luckily the office had some samples- so i got a free 600iu cartridge! i was so thankful. i think it would have cost about $300 or more for that cartridge. luckily i only need one cartridge this month as we doing low dose since i tend to overstim on the clomid. (but lo and behold, it wasn't enough this cycle). Be sure and ask your office about samples or donations. Many folks that have it covered by ins get 'extra' cartridges and don't use them all and might donate them. it's worth asking about at least. I might have to pay for next month, so that stinks. ______________________________________so had my first u/s w/ the inj and i only have 3 follies worht anything- 19.5, 17 and 14.5. schedule for insem on friday, by then the 19.5 will be over-mature probably and the other two should be up to the right size. that only gives me two to work with. so that is disappointing. i wish i had more (i had 7 the last two cycles w/ clomid). so i am thinking this month won't happen. i am kinda pissed and disappointed. oh well, nothing i can do now but hope and pray. my lining is great though, so the shots helped that (was a problem with clomid).

Hi Tink, how many IUI's with inj have you done? did you do just the regular IUI with clomid before?? We have done the IUI with clomid 3 times and failed all three times, so this will be our first with injectibles, I am nervous but excited, I am trying to not think we may only be doing it one time, but we have our appt on the 10th to discuss the tx and start in Nov if it works out as soon as my a/f starts, I wish you the best, let me know, good luck!!

my dr. had mentioned to me today about doing a treatment that is 200.00 and the ins. doesn't cover it does anyone know what it could be.

Cspears- good luck with your next cycle. i just did my trigger shot (ovidrel) last night and do the IUI tomorrow. this is my injectable cycle too. I did 5 nights of 100iu shots of follistim, which isn't a high dose. i started them on day 5, which was later than normal (jsut the way my appt was scheduled and how AF came after my lap). i had a lap 2 weeks ago, so i skipped the october cycle. i was out of town for business anyways during ovulation time. i did an IUI with clomid in both august and september. no luck, but good response (7 follicles- 4 eggs released both months). i had thin lining. the shots have fixed that and my lining is great this time. i am ready to do the IUI tomorrow and get into the 2WW. i'll be able to know the results by November 20th or so i think. the injections were not hard and i got the cartridge/vial of it for free since they had samples on hand at my RE's office. I think that cartridge would usually be at least $300 or up to $600 (600iu). good luck to you, keep me posted on how it goes!!! ----------tony&joe- not sure what the procedure could be- most things i have done are more than $200. my insurance covers our ultrasounds, those are about $300 a pop. IUI is about $400 a pop. Drugs are pricey too. Maybe this is just an initial consultation charge? clomid is cheap, i think mine was $30 a month, so maybe he is just going to try something like that? it stimulates ovulation and is usually something most will try first. it could also be some sort of testing perhaps? I am not sure how much a die test runs, but probably more than $200. here's pricing on things i've done here in TX-
-------ultrasounds- $200-$300
-------lap- $2000
-------clomid one month - $30
-------trigger shot - $65
i didn't keep track of bloodwork/lab stuff, but it all gets pricey. each visit where i do an u/s and blood work probably is like $500, but is covered by ins for that stuff.

Hi tink thanks for that, good luck to you too, I will be thinking about you please let me know how it goes?? We have our appt next friday and hope to start this month, the cost for us though I don't know if we just go for the IVF and take out a loan or something, well good luck and let me know how it goes, best wishes!!!

Sorry I haven't been around, I was put back on bed rest so I have just been laying on the couch trying not to move. I just read through all of your posts. Cheryl, I will be completely honest with you......$6000 is too high! That doc is ripping you off. I live in Florida in a mega rich area and see one of the best docs in the country and even he doesn't charge that much for a cycle of injectables. I kept tabs of everything I paid for and my cycle ran around $1600. Even if you had to use more meds or have more U/S's, it still wouldn't have come close to $6000. I know you just want the best and want to get moving, but have you seen other docs for pricing and opinions? Tink, don't be dimayed with two follies. I had lots of follies at ovulation time, but four were mature, two ovulated and I got PG with fraternal twins. I have since had a "vanishing twin" meaning I lost one of them at about 8.5 weeks, but I still have one! It is quite common to lose a twin in early pregnancy, only 20% make it through to the end. There is still hope for you with two follies!!!! Hang in there! In a previos post, someone was talking about how really the only way to find endo is by doing a lap. My periods were like clockwork but they were quite painful, so the doc thought maybe he'd find it, and lo and behold he did. I had it on my bladder, ovaries, various places. We would have never known I had it had we not done the lap. Anyway, Cheryl, please don't pay $6000 for a cycle of injectables. I want you to be able to do multiple cycles if you need to and at that price......well, you'll reach your limit way too soon. That doc needs to justify his price gouging!

EDY - November 6

I started Follistim last year and had 1 IUI 36-40 hours after on Nov 9th 2006 and I now have 4 1/2 month old twin girls. (They were 7 weeks early.) They were actually triplets in the very begining and our RE was very careful. I only had 2 mature eggs from what my E2 levels showed, but 3 eggs were released. The meds cost approx $2500-$3000 and the IUI and u/s monitored cycle was $700. The sperm wash was $180. We got pregnant on our 1st cycle with Follistim and IUI. Good Luck!

Hi Tracy thanks for that but I have contacted three of the Infertility clinics and they are all the same rate, they just sent me sheet breaking done the prices, its the 5 ultrasounds they do that cost the most which was around 2000- for the u/s then the two IUI's I think were 300- each, then the bloodwork and the meds and the sperm washing?? I think California is just more expensive then anywhere else!!! For just the IUI's with clomid that with everything was around 1600-, its almost worth it for us to move!! :-) thanks for all the advice I can only hope this first cycle will work?? because its most likely going to be the only one we will do, good luck to everyone and thanks again I will keep you updated.

cspears99 - November 12

Well I just got my meds $1000- my Gon-F pen and ovidrel I will start them as soon as I get my period, so wish me luck, I am so nervous the needles seem big to me, did everyone inject in the stomach?? fingers crossed!!!

Tracy88 - November 13

I injected in the stomach and did my trigger shot in my hip/butt. I imagined it to be worse than it really was. After getting over the fear of giving myself a shot, and realizing it didn't really hurt, it was so easy to get through. I was afraid the trigger shot was going to hurt, but my mom did such a good job giving it that I didn't even know she had done it. She went to nursing school in England many years ago, but didn't finish because she moved to the States, but man can she give a shot! Anyway, I want to know how things go for you. You will go nuts during your TWW. Just want to prepare you for that. When you spend huge chunks of money on this stuff, the TWW is worse than normal. I was so depressed and determined to believe that it didn't work because I had no symptoms. I started getting really bad menstrual cramps around 10dpiui and I really thought it was over. I spent four days or so rushing to the bathroom and carrying tampons around. I tested exactly 14dpiui and got a positive, so keep the faith and stay strong. I fell apart and don't recommend it! Keep me posted please.

cspears99 - November 13

Hi Tracy thank you for that, I am trying to prepare myself!!! its difficult as you know, how are you? are you having a single or multiple birth? Also did you test at all before the 14th day?? I am crazy during the 2ww wait and test a million times I am not going to this time?? best wishes and will keep you updated :-)

Tracy88 - November 13

Cheryl, I am having one baby. I had an ultrasound last week and it is getting cuter by the week. I am 13 weeks today and I know you can't tell what they look like at this point, but I think it's cute regardless. I had twins, but lost one almost 5 weeks ago. I only tested once around 8 or 9 dpiui to see if the trigger shot was out of my system, then I went out of town and tested the night I came back, which was 14 days past ovulation and my 2nd IUI. I wasn't even going to test but my husband wanted to go to the drugstore and buy some so I caved in. I told him it was night time and that you are supposed to test with first morning urine, but he didn't care. I came home from the store, tested, and surprisingly it quickly came up positive. I hope the same thing happens for you.

Tink - November 13

Tracy, thanks for sharing your info! it gives me hope!

Cheryl- good luck on your cycle! i just did a follistim/ovidrel cycle with IUI too. I am now 10DPO (CD22- i o'd early). I haven't tested yet and the RE told me to test this Friday, which is 14DPO. i am so freaking nervous, hopeful and dreading it all at the same time. Cheryl, sorry to hear about the costs too- maybe CA is just more pricey. My RE however is able to submit my sonos through insurance- he doesn't submit them under fertility though. they can submit them as PCOS or endo checks. lots of them do it i think. that way it goes through and is covered. it's been a blessing to have those covered since i have about 5 a month. The injectables is what is going to kill me financially! lol- i hope this first try with them did the trick and delivers our miracle! it really is harder in this 2WW with the injectables! i have had some symptoms, but could be PMS or side effects from antibiotics i am on for sinus infection. (antibiotics are safe for pregnancy, i made sure the doc knew my plight). anyways- i've had some cramping, including some lower cramping which isn't like my PMS cramps. i've had some lower back pain, but it is similar to my PMS back pain. also very tired, but i've had a horrible sinus infection for 2 weeks, so it could be that. i am so tired of wondering which symptom could be what. i just want friday to be here so i can know my answer. i am going to be so distraught if it didn't work this time. this is our third IUI. i've had 6 cycles on clomid, 2 of those with IUIs, plus a lap. plus trying for a good year/year and half before that with temping etc. I am just ready to have my miracle!!! baby dust to you Cheryl- good luck! and best wishes on a healthy pregnancy Tracy!

cspears99 - November 13

Oh good luck Tink I will be thinking very happy, positive thoughts!!! :-) thank you Tracy for all the info and you must have been so happy to see that positive result, I really hope I see one this time around, but one day at a time I should get my period on the 16th so I will take it from there, when I did my IUI and clomid I was lucky that some of the u/s and bloodwork was covered by my ins but now that we are at a clinic nothing is covered by our ins, but hopefully it will be this once!! I hope you all keep me updated and I wish you both the best, let you know soon what is going on!! :-)

Tink - November 13

oh and Cheryl, on the injections, they really aren't that bad. i believe Gonal- F and follistim are about the same thing. do you have the 'pen' to inject with? i had my hubby do it for 3 of the nights and then he went out of town, so i had my sister come do it. i just didn't want to do it myself. it was really painless. i did it in my stomach, just below the belly button area- switching sides each night. the needle is so small and it really doesn't hurt. i am sure you will do fine! what days and dose are you doing?

Tracy88 - November 13

Tink, I will be thinking of you, sitting here on pins and needles. I know you will feel devastated if you don't get PG the first time around with the shots, but I have a story for you that may give you hope. On two separate threads but at the same time I had two friends who did injectables two cycles in a row and did not get PG. They were both on a break cycle, had nookie at the right times, and got PG. Both of them had been trying forever and had gone through laps and all, and both got PG on their "break". I think the shots gave both of them the kick starts their body needed. Don't lose faith, stay strong, and I will check in to hear about your BFP at the end of this week!!!
