Spotting, cramps then late Period

On 08/14and 08/15 I had bad cramps. On 08/16 I started spotting a wee bit. My period was due on the 17th but never came. I had cramps all week and then on 21st I had major cramps and my period came. I went to the emerg concerned as I have never felt so rough and I figured the spotting was implantation bleeding. I have never been late before and have never had cramps for a whole week. Doctor thought it may just be a hormone imbalance or I was maybe pregnant for a couple days and it just didn't take. Has this happened to anyone? Is this normal or a sign of problems to come? This was the first month we have tried.
