prometrium????

Hello all. This is my first time here. I just wondered if anyone could tell me anything about prometrium? My dr. just put me on it , but I really have no idea how it works. Will this help me get pregnant? In April 2000 I had a miscarriage after trying to get pregnant for about 8 months. I was 8 weeks I think. We kept trying and trying and in Feb. 2002 I had another m/c. - blighted ovum. In Dec. of 2003 I finally got preg. with my son who will be 2 next month. I have always had very irregular periods, anywhere from 26 days to 54 (since I'bve been keeping track of them anyway). I've been trying to get pregnant again for almost a year now, with no luck. My Dr. said that I could have PCOS ? and that I probably wasn't ovulating (which would account for my breasts neverbeing sore anymore). So she wrote me a prescription for prometrium and told me it should be taken about 10 days before your period , but since I never know when I'm going to start, and I average about 37 days to take it that night. Take it every night from the 19th to the 28th each month. She said that 3-4 months from now if I haven't conceived to make an appointment to see about getting on clomid. She also took some blood to run a few tests.
I read that progesterone can help you keep a pregnancy, but if you stop taking it you'll miscarry. I don't know what to do. Should I keep taking it?

April, I'm on Provera now to start my period and its like Prometrium. From my understanding, all this medicine does is start your period. I am also beginning Clomid this month. If you dont get pg soon, you might want to ask about Clomid.

I'm confused. So then why would my Dr. want me to take it if all it does is start my period? How is that going to help me get pregnant? I'd ask, but she's on vacation.

I'd recommend this site: http://www.drugs.com/cons/Prometrium.html to answer any questions regarding the drug. I've done the whole clomid thing and I started prometrium after I ovulated to help the uterus soften, when I wasn't pg (via HCG measurement from teh blood sample), I was to stop taking it and allow my cycle to run it's course. Thankfully this last month I found out I was pregnant and I am to continue the drug (i think for the first trimester) to help along the pregnancy. I hope this helps...best of luck!!!

Hi April! I have pcos and am on prometrium. It works by building up the lining in your uterus, or at least that's what my doc told me. I started out with the clomid (that Lindsey talked about). That ensures that I ovulate. Then I have to take prometrium starting the day after I ovulate. It is a progesterone supplement, which I have an apparent deficiency in due to my pcos. I ovulated today, so I will start taking it tonight! Last month it made me very sleepy, but if it builds up my uterus to the point where implantation can happen, that will be great!! Let us know how it goes and if you get af.
