heard that yams (cassava mainly) are a great help to fertility (and for those who want multiples) .. but i heard they are also used as contraceptives ..... which is it? or does it depend on when in your cycle you use it?? before or after O???

I've never heard about them being used as contraceptives, though it could very well be true. Maybe it's a different type of yam? I have definitely heard that a certain type of yam is good for conceiving multiples though. Did you hear about the contraceptive thing from a reliable website? A .gov or .org?
