how is insulin rsistance diagnosed?

HI, everyone. I was just wondering how you get tested for insulin resistance, and what the treatment is. I want to ask my doc to test me, but what do I ask? Thanks for all your help!

I had a glucose tolerance test which confirmed I am IR. I am taking metformin (frequently called met) for treatment, and also trying to drop some weight, get exercise and eat better.
