Drinking and TTC- please don't judge

How many of you still drink on occasion while TTC? I am just curious. I have read all these things of course about drinking can decrease your fertility. Drinking is the only thing bad we do, we don't smoke or do drugs, we try to eat right. Sometimes I think I may not be getting pg because God sees that I still party and drink from time to time. It's not all the time, but on the weekends usually. Now, that we are seeing an RE and trying IUI (our first one just failed) I am going to try and stay away from the drinking. I was just curious if any of you still partyed from time to time? Dh and I are both 31 and alot of our friends drink, but most of them have children already and it didn't seem to hurt their fertility. I know everyone is different, but should I stop my life the way I live it because we are TTC ?? I just need some insight here. Thanks in advance.

in my opionion just bc u drink doesnt mean u wont conceive i dont think it helps, so you may just wanna cut back if you cant give it up completely. i would say if thats ur one bad habit your ahead of alot of other people who conceive on drinking drugs and mental problems who are very unhealthy. i had a girl at work who drank alot and mostly during the weekend, and i thought at first the reaon she wasnt coneiving was b/c she was too much of a partier but that wasnt the case b/c she got pregnant about 7 monhtes into trying-so hope this helps.

I like my wine. I would drink a glass (more nights than I should) even while ttc but I would stop right after O on the chance that it would be the month! No one should judge you. Just stay away from the hard stuff and drink moderately and you should be fine! Good luck to Chas! Oh and I would try not to drink much around b/c alcohol tends to "dry me up" My dr always says that you're fine until the placenta forms. That's when the baby is at risk.

I don't think it's a really big deal. I mean really...how many people who are NOT trying to get pregnant - get drunk and get pregnant...LOL!!! I told the lady at my fertility clinic I was going to get blotto'd next time I went in for IUI...and she laughed. I don't drink after I ovulate...but I do the night AF starts - its kind of a perk me up sort of thing.

Thanks guys... I got af Friday, so last night we had a party to go to for St. Patty's day and I drank my sorrows away! This crap sucks!! Starting clomid today and a new cycle to look forward to. Hope I don't have a lot of side effects from the clomid. Yeah, I know what you mean about people who aren't trying who get wasted and get pregnant! It's not fair !! :(

Hey Chas! I am starting Clomid today as well. (I also got AF on Friday...so here we go). This is the third time I have been on Clomid - first couple times I had some problems - so I think I am ready for it this time....except I do tend to get a little grumpy...Good Luck this month. Karen

What kind of problems did you have? Are you doing IUI also, or just trying natural? I have never taken clomid before. We tried IUI last month with no meds. This time I will give clomid a try with the IUI.

The first month I tried clomid - my progesterone was really high - over 150 and my dr. said it was too much so they reduced my dose....the next time (2 months later cause I do one month on - one month off ) my numbers were really good. Even my prolactin was elevated so they thought I was prego. But I wasn't, which meant a whole set of new problems - because then they thought I had a little tiny tumor in my brain..apparently it's sort of common. So they gave me bromocryptine to keep my prolactin levels down (prolactin is the stuff you produce to make milk when you're prego, but it is a huge problem if you are not). Blah blah blah. Anyways, I am glad to be on it again. You should notice your body react somehow...mine does...but I think it is pretty good. Anyways, good luck to you. I think you have a much higher chance of getting preggers on clomid than not....do you have trouble ovulating? Karen

My specialist told me to live life as normal until a BFP arrives, so if you like a drink or two, then do it. Don't hold back and deny yourself little things like a glass of wine or two. LIVE LIFE!! There's plenty of time for abstinence - through pregnancy and breastfeeding!! :-)

i would just say: be cautious. there have been studies that showed drinkers conceive at a lower rate than non-drinkers. alcohol apparently can suppress fsh and lh that are needed to stimulate your ovaries. i have researched this quite a bit because i too am torn between taking every possible step to encourage pregnancy and wanting to live a normal life without the constant reminder i'm not actually what i'm pretending to be by not drinking, etc. most recently i did some research about this on saturday because it was a friend's bday drinks and i wanted to know whether a glass of champagne was really going to have any possible effect on implantation prospects (i was on cd5.) i read all these studies on pregnant rats - one of which concluded alcohol could actually make implantation happen faster and had no effect on live births. but then another study found it could also suppress progesterone and potentially hurt a pregnancy. well i had the champers in the end - a small amount after eating a meal. i had to laugh then when i read the front page of th newspaper yesterday: NO ALCOHOL IN PREGNANCY, was the headline. Even while ttc, it said. i live in the UK where we have a fairly relaxed attitude toward the occasional drink in pregnancy but apparently the official recommendation may soon follow the US model and say none at all is acceptable. the fact is women get pregnant all the time no matter the amount the drink. but if like me you have hormone issues ( i had a high FSH reading recently, at 10.4) then maybe it's best to avoid it in the preovulatory phase too.

once i started fertility treatments (over a year ago), i stopped drinking for the most part. I wasn't a big drinker anyways- just social on occassion. We don't drink at home or anything. It was maybe once a month. I didn't want to mix drinking with the drugs i was taking (clomid, follistim and then IVF drugs). plus i didn't want to do anything to lessen my chances. I did have a cycle i had to sit out due to a cyst and i drank during that month a few times, since it was a break cycle. but not in excess. I also had one night i celebrated the start of my IVF cycle in early January- i was only on birth control pills at the time and it was one night with a few beers. other than that, i avoided drinking while on meds. especially once i started IVF (started lupron). no caffeine and no alcohol. i don't smoke etc. anyways. and I did get my BFP with IVF and am almost 7 weeks now. so of course no drinks for me- even in vegas next week! ;) i was paying out of pocket for my treatments (including 4 months of clomid, 2 IUIs with clomid, lap, 2 IUIs with injectables and then IVF). so i didn't want to jeopardize my treatments on meds by drinking when it was a lot of money for everything. a glass of red wine probably won't kill you, but drinking in excess i wouldn't recommend while undergoing treatment- if you are on meds, i would stop completely. might as well get used to it, since if you get your BFP, you will have to stop anyways ;) good luck

Thanks for all the feedback. Trying4pg, no I don't have trouble o'ing. I ovulate on my own, we originally were dealing with a low sperm count but at the IUI dh's count had risen to 86 million. We are kind of unexplained. I got pg last year, and miscarried. I am hoping the clomid will help increase my eggs and give me a better chance. So, this month will be clomid with an IUI. I am praying !! Wow, sounds like your first attempt at clomid was wild ! I have read up on all the side effects, I have felt a little moody and it's only been one day ! lol. maybe, it's just me! Jg, I like your advice! I need to just keep living and not let this control my life! It's so hard after you have been trying for so long. I am hoping this month takes, because if it doesn't it will be time to take a break and save a little more money! :) Wish us luck ! Good luck to everyone else too !

Hey Cha - I feel good that this month could be the month for you!!! Even if not,my nurse told me that you are still reallysusceptable to pregnancy the month following as well. So I'll cross my fingers and toes, and you do the same!!! Anny - I don't know - I know there's been times where my body has cruelly fooled me - but it could be - it's that wait that kills us!!! See if you can get in for a blood test - they are very accurate. Take Care Everyone!
