ovulation question advice please

I am looking to get pregnant, and just wondered what is the best way to work out the first day of your cycle when you have a spot of bleeding, but your period does not start "properly" for another few days, which day is day one, is it the first proper bleed day?

I have the same issue...my period does not fully flow out until 3-4 days of very light spotting..so when is it technically starting?

consider day one if true blood flowing already, not the spotting, because spotting means the end of your cycle.
