Name: B | Date: January 13, 2005, 18:13
Answer: ok thanx...has anyone one else been on Metformin and birth control at the same time?

Name: Nava | Date: January 16, 2005, 10:00
Answer: Yes, I have PCO and I am two months pregnant from it. My husband and I have been together ten years, this is my first pregnancy. I was very overweight when I first started taking them and I lost about sixty pounds on my own, so maybe it is a combination of the weightloss and metformin. When I first started taking metformin I was on birthcontrol and I took them at the same time, so there is no problem taking them together. I just found I hardly had any blood during my period. The only thing is if you are young, the Metformin is hard on your kidneys and taking them over the years may cause damage to the kidneys. I think I am going to try to switch to something else, but I am only pre-diabetic and was losing weight prior to the pregnancy so I don't really need them as much.

Name: tyrin4baby | Date: January 18, 2005, 22:41
Answer: metformin is a diabetic medication. I've just started taking it as well. What I have been told and/or have read about it there is an increased chance of pregnancy but is not used as a fertility drug. I've been going to a fertility specialist and they said the same thing as well. My cousin was on glucaphage in which metformin is the generic form. They put her on it when she was taking the injections to try to help decrease the amount of eggs.

Name: Sara | Date: February 2, 2005, 1:38
Answer: yes, i am taking it for pcos and the only side effect is crampy bm's ugh. But not preg yet. Its depressing.

Name: LD | Date: February 3, 2005, 16:24
Answer: I was just put on metiform. I tried 2 months of just clomid and it didn't work. I didn't ovulate. My doctor decided to add metiform to see if that helps. I am taking 1000mg. I am always eating small snacks because I do feel sick especially if I don't eat. I also take progesterone to start my period. I hope to start next week which will start my cycle. This month I'm going to take my BBT and see what is going on with me. I have PCOS so I knew I'd have problems getting pregnant. I just didn't realize all the medications I'd have to be on. I hate taking 5 pills a day. (also taking prenatal vitamins for just incase). If it works it will be worth it. Feeling sick to my stomach is about the only bad side effect that I've had.

Answer: hi i am on metformin, i have pcos, when i took the 500mg dose there was no difference, but it was a good dose to start on to vercome any side effects such as nausea. i then went onto 850mg and after two months i got back my periods, they are long cycles but i hadn`t had my periods for over 6months so it has really helped. i am hoping it will help me get pregnant too.

Name: Nikki | Date: February 16, 2005, 13:48
Answer: I tried to get pregnant for 8 months without success. My doctor put me on Metformin. The second month taking the medicine did result in a pregnancy. However, I miscarried 8 weeks later. I am waiting for another cycle to start so I can try again using Clomid and Metformin. I hope this information helps. I also have PCOS and went thru infertility shots to conceive my first successful pregnancy and went on the have 2 more children on my own without medicine. However, I am not that lucky this time.

Answer: I'm on Metformin, have been for over a year, I also have PCO and have not become pregnant yet and have been trying even before the pills. Althought I'm on Metformin for diabetes and no side effects have occurred for me.

Name: Stephannie | Date: February 17, 2005, 13:21
Answer: Hi, I have been on Metformin ( gloucophage XR ) for a few yrs, my husband and I decided we wanted to have a baby, I have Non Classical Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia. (pco is also a symptom) . My doctor advised it will help prevent the baby from getting diabetes. The only side effect I don't like is that if I forget to eat when I take it my sugar drops real fast and I can barely move. (scary) Are you insulin sensitive?

Name: Nick | Date: February 18, 2005, 12:45
Answer: My wife has been treated for PCOS using metformin and it has helped. Our Doctors are telling us to stop metformin once pregnant but within a week of doing so last time we lost the baby. She is now pregnant again and we have not yet had the appointment with the Doctor but we know what they will tell us to do. Some trials suggest a huge reduction in miscarriage rates in women with PCOS when treated with metformin and I've read that asprin can also help (please read up on the subject and don't take this as medical advice). We are now in a real panic and looking for information that we can use to pursuade the Doctor to change his mind.

Name: N | Date: February 18, 2005, 13:29
Answer: Dear Nick, I was put on Metformin this fall because I haven't been able to conceive in nearly a year. I have 3 children already and had gest. diabetes with the first pregnancy and was put on insulin. The other 2 pregnancies were controlled with diet and I didn't have gest diabetes with them. My sugars have been fine since their births and my doctor put me on Metformin anyway because of the PCO. I became pregnant during my sencond month of taking Metformin, and my docotor wanted me to take it during the first 12 weeks of the pregnancy to prevent miscarriage. Unfortunately I recently lost the baby at 8 weeks. My doctor wants me to continue on Metformin and to take Clomid and baby asprin the next time we try to conceive. I would discuss with your doctor why he requests you stop the medicine when it had been prescribed to me to help prevent miscarriage. Remember, it's your choice and you should do what you feel is right. Good Luck

Answer: Hi. I have been on metformin for three years. I have PCOS. I used chlomid to get pregnant. I didn't take metformin during my first pregnany and I miscarried at 10 weeks. I did take it during my second pregnany and miscarried at 8 weeks. I was sick on metformin until I took 2 800mg doses rather than 3 500mg.

Name: Gena | Date: March 9, 2005, 18:12
Answer: I have been on metformin for ~2 years now,m solely for infertility. I don't have PCOS or diabetes, nor am I pre-diabetic. My doctor said it has shown to increase the likelihood of getting pregnant, and then keeping the pregnancy during the first trimester (reduces chance of miscarriage). I have had 3 IUIs, and just did my 4th IVF - I am now pregnant, still on metformin. So far, so good. But, I have heard you should come off of metformin after the first trimester if possible. Initially on metformin, I lost ~#20. And, the effect on bowels/gas/diarrhea is unpleasant, but subsides over time. I take between 1500-2000mg/day.

Answer: Come March 30th, I will have been on Metformin, 1000mg a day, for 8 weeks. My last normal period was on Jan. 25th. I should have had my period on Feb. 22nd, but it's still not here..My question is, how long after taking Metformin can you get pregnant? I have not had any signs of being pregnant, just the missed period..I have been regular for two years now. I have not taken a hpt yet, in fear that it will be that big old NO...Let me know how long you guys have been on Metformin before getting pregnant. My doc said that she put one of her patients on it the end of Nov., and in Dec she was pregnant..Thanks

Name: Nika | Date: March 10, 2005, 11:56
Answer: I have PCOS, infertility spec placed me on Metformin. With initial dose I had no side effects but when I increased to 1000mg I was very sick to my stomache..Begining on my first cycle after being on Metformin for one month at 1000mg I took Letrozol and responded well..after 5 days I then used an Hcg injection to trigger ovulation and was scheduled for an IUI ...I am now 20 weeks pregnant. Doc advised me to stay on Metformin for 12 weeks but I was not comfortable continuing the medication w/ my pregnancy and didn't.. I have had no problems and the baby is healthy!

Answer: I began taking Metformin strictly for PCOS in July of 2004, I started off with 500mg, had some nausea but it was not bad, ended up taking 1500mg daily. Periods stopped coming in dec. and now I am taking 2000mg, there have been no side effects though my periods have yet to come back. I have a question maybe someone can enlighten me, my doctor is VERY concerned that I NOT become Pregnant while on the Metformin, she is concerned with the effect the drug has on the fetus, has noone else heard of this before?

Name: Mary | Date: March 15, 2005, 18:54
Answer: After a year of trying to conceive, I was diagnosed with PCOS and prescribed Metformin. I was instructed to gradually increase my dosage from 500mg to 1500mg over the course of three week. I experienced no ill effects whatsoever. During my next cycle, we conceived. At 4 weeks into the pregancy, My OB recommended I discontinue use (although recent studies suggest Metformin during pregnancy may reduce chance of miscarraige and gest. diabetes). I am now 6 months pregnant and everything is progressing very well. I consider this drug the sole reason for our success.

Answer: Hi, my husband and I have been trying to get pregnant again for about 3 years now. I have PCOS and the doctor from the hospital put me on Metformin but my GP has taken me off it, so now I don't know what I am going to do. I am also taking Folic Acid and drinking Raspberry Tea to try and help. We are desperate for another child.

Name: vanessa | Date: March 21, 2005, 12:28
Answer: joanne, why did your doctor take you of it?

Name: Priscilla | Date: March 23, 2005, 16:14
Answer: I took an ovulation test last month, it was positive- so we tried like rabbits. I do not ovulate on a regular basis- as in you cant figuire it like clock work. One doctor said that I do have it- The other said that I do not (PCOS). I have a child that is 5- and my husband and I are desperate for another. It was hard to hear that at 22 I may not have another child. Pregnancy tests later shows negative- so the doctor put me on Glucophage- 1000 a day- 1 Pill in the morning- 1 pill at night. Once Diagnosed with the PCOS I lost 33 lbs in about 3 months. I am starting the Glucophage today and I hope to have a succcess story soon. I am also taking Vitamin E and Folic Acid- Multi Vitamins put a lot of weight on me. My only option is the clomid because I cant afford the IVF. I am hoping to not go to that. What vitamins out there that can assist you in ovulating? It scares me that some help you ovulate but then say DISCONTINUE IF PREGNANCY OCCURS- like hello? What is it going to do to me? TOOOO Scary! When do you know if you have gone to far? I realized that there are two types of people in the world. One set that tries there who life to have a family- and one that does everything they can not to have a family, but the end up having a family. It is sad to see people with children who hurt them, or treat them badly. It hurts me to see some people who should not have children. I see people everyday that would give anything to hold a child in there arms. Then reality sets in. When is enough- enough? What amount is too much to pay to have that joy in your arms? How many treatments are you willing to take to hold your destiny? Are you putting a price on life? Maybe I have gone to deep, But this is what runs through my head when I try to sleep at night. Thank you for your input. Good luck to all in your journey for Pregnancy.

Answer: my doctor recently put me on metformin to treat PCOS. my periods were very irregular and i was not ovulating. My cycles were between 32 and 50 days. after just on week on metformin i got my period at 35 days. (alot closer to normal than 50 days). i was started on 1000mg/day for two weeks and starting tomorrow i got to 1500 mg/day. Hopefully my next period will come at a normal 28-30 days. I too am hoping to get pregnant and have been trying for a successful pregnancy after 3 miscarriages and one that i lost at 6 months pregnant. My doctor is planning on adding clomid after three months of metformin if i am not yet pregnant. Wish me luck!!!! Hope this information helps, and good luck to all who are trying to conceive.!!!

Answer: I am have been taking metformin for about 3 months now, and I feel great. The only side effect I had was irritable bowels for the first two weeks, but then it goes away. I have PCO, and my doctor started me on metformin for two months, and then we added chlomid. My follicles responded with the very first dose, so she gave me a shot of HCG to make me ovulate. So we will see in a couple of weeks, if I concieved. She also told me that once I get pregnant, I will continue to take the metformin, because it will help reduce my risk of miscarriage and gestational diabetes. So I say go for it!!!

Answer: Hi, I have PCOS and have been ttc for 2 years. I have been on clomid for almost 8 cycles and still didn't conceive. I'm put on metformin 1000mg/day but side effects are strong on me. My heart seems to beat faster. Anyone feels the same?

Answer: My husband and I were trying to conceive for 3 years and went to a reproductive endocrinologist after my OB told me that my eggs were too old based on the estradiol level in my blood. The reproductive endocrinologist diagnosed me with PCOS and started me on 500 mg of metformin per day. Two weeks later I was pregnant. He kept me on the metformin at 500 mg per day and I had a healthy baby boy 19 months ago. I went on the metformin again last July and am now pregnant with my second son - due in early May, 2005. I experienced no side effects. It was a wonder drug for us and I hope for you as well......

Answer: hi i was wondering how long should you stay sick while taking metformin. i don't know if its the metformin or the spirolactone that is keeping me sick so I stop taking both. the birth control my doctor had me on made me gain at least 15 pounds so i stop taking them to i am thinking about just taking the metformin until i go back to the doctor to see if I still have side affects.

Name: Jennifer Hoeft | Date: April 22, 2005, 11:35
Answer: I have been on metformin 3 months in combination with clomid. Still not pregnant! I get a lot of GI upset from the metformin, have lost weight due to the fact that I just don't want to eat. But, if I get pregnant will be all worth it! I am due to take a pregnancy test in 2 days, we will see what happens. jenobryan78@aol.com

Answer: On Metfomin for PCOS have been trying to concieve for 31/2 years for baby #2 did the clomid and didn't work OB increased dose of metformin from 500mg to 2000mg and I am now 7 weeks pregnant. I am still taking the 2000mg because my son was born at 29 weeks and it is believed that it was because I stoped taking the metformin during pregnancy. My side affect to upping the dose would only last a few days.

Answer: Hi, I'm currently taking metformin to help me ovulate. I've only been taking it for 3 weeks. I take 3 pills a day at 500mg a pill. I also took provera to help me start my period then took serophene for 5 days. I'm not pregnant yet, but trying like crazy. The only side effect I've had by taking metformin is sickness. I feel sick just about all the time. I'm glad I found this site b/c it's really helped me understand this medicine and the effects on pregnancy it has. Good luck to all who are ttc!!! God bless :)

Answer: Hi there. I have a couple questions as well about metformin. My husband and I have been trying to have a baby for 3 years now...and no luck. We've been through many check ups and found out it's me, not him. I had a laparoscopy and found out I had endometriosis. They had thought I had pcos, but I don't. I don't have diabetes, but my dr put me on metformin, and I quit taking them cuz how sick I get. Question, does the sickness go away in time? Does it really help the chances in conceiving cuz it is so depressing seeing numerous neg preg tests. I am only 23 and wish it were easier to get pregnant just like the rest of you ladies. Thanks

Answer: I was diagnosed with insulin resistance and borderline PCOS. I have been on Metformin for the past 6 months and now I am pregnant...my gynec has asked me to continue with it through the first trimester... Answer: I started taking metformin on Sunday (1700) i feel so sick with it but i will perservere in order to see the light at the end of this tunnel. i was just wondering how long it will take. I found out about my pcos acouple of months ago a year ago i conceived after 2 yrs of trying but miscarried at 5 mnths i'm soooooooooo desperate to conceive again. If the met doesn't work i have an appt for july and doc will put me on clomid. I'm worried tho, if my cervix isn't strong enough to hold one baby and i get preg with twins on clomidd what will happen. I will feel blessed if the Lord wants to give me twins but i just hope i can hold them successfully. I'm praying i can get pregnant on met alone as i don't even want to wait until July to statr clomid and also because of the worry. Anyone got any words of encouragment. Good luck and god bless to everyone!

Answer: Nadine, Hi there. I had just written a few days ago about metformin, but I do have a good update. I took 2 pregnancy tests on Mother's Day, and to my complete shock, they were both positive. I had to take 2 cuz I was in so much disbelief. I just couldn't believe it. My husband and I have been trying for 3 years, and I've had surgery to try to help me get pregnant, but it seems like right after I took metformin, and quit it, I got pregnant. I gave up after about 2 weeks cuz I got so sick being on it. But maybe it was enough to help me conceive, or maybe the good lord was watching over me and knew it was time. But good luck and keep us updated!

Name: Nadine | Date: May 12, 2005, 7:44
Answer: Donna i'm so happy for you, i hope if i continue taking it i can share your joy. Fingers crossed for both of us and everyone else trying. So did you not have a period? What made you take the test?

Name: Donna | Date: May 12, 2005, 10:09
Answer: Nadine, you see, I have always had terrible cycles, such as no periods or two long and painful periods a month. So it was really no surprise to me that my period wasn't on time. But I woke up on Mother's Day and told myself I was gonna take one. I didn't want to cuz I didn't know what I would do if it was negative again. But it was positive. My only worry now is that I hope I can carry the baby to full term, since I have had so many problems with everything. But I can't preach to you to keep taking them...cuz I quit taking them after a couple weeks, but I hope you do long enough to conceive. Do you have pretty regular cycles to know when you may be ovulating? Best of luck and maybe soon you will be pregnant..or maybe you already are!!!

Answer: donna, im so happay for you. i wish you the best. i've been with metformin sor three weeks and i had a nausea and headache. but hearing your success story made me feel hopefull. i had my ultrasound last May 9 and found out that i have two mature follicle. what is my chance to be pregnant?

Name: Nadine | Date: May 13, 2005, 8:17
Answer: Donna before i got pregnant my periods were never regular, after my miscarriage they were coming every month then in Jan i had my last period. Over the past few days i've been getting cramps like my period is coming or maybe i am ovulating, i don't know. I will continue taking them and hope they work as quick for me What dose were u on i'm on 850 tice a day

Name: Donna | Date: May 13, 2005, 9:56
Answer: Marie, I'm not too educated about the mature follicles, but I'm sure that with time and effort....it will happen. I wish you the best of luck. Nadine, I was taking 500 mg twice a day, but my dr wanted me to up to 3, then 4 times a day. Gosh, NO. I thought I'd be stuck in the bathroom the rest of my life. Hopefully you tried to make a baby on those days you had cramping, because you may have been ovulating. I conceived exactly 2 weeks after the first day of my period. It's still so surreal to me that I am pregnant. My first dr appt is May 31st, so maybe then I'll believe it. But best of luck and talk to you soon.

Answer: I have been taking Metformin for last week and the nausea is like constant travel sickness. We had 6 months of clomid with no luck. I am slightly over weight and wonder if this drug is given to overweight ladies who don't ovulate? I have not spoken to my consultant but a very rude doctor who filled out the prescription said they would not give this to me if I was small......I am about 25 pounds over weight. Has anybody else heard this?

Name: Nadine | Date: May 17, 2005, 7:35
Answer: Hey Donna. I came on my period on Saturday which means i ovulated before i started taking the tablets. I have now been taking them for a little over a week. I still feel extremely weak and sick but hope that ends soon i will be having sex llike a rabbit this month to hopefully ensure i catch my ovulation date. Please keep me in your prayers that this cycle is it for me. Please God

Name: Donna | Date: May 17, 2005, 11:08
Answer: Nadine, Good luck with the baby making process. If I were you, I'd go to a website that will help calculate your most fertile days. That will kinda give you help to as when you should be making love. But like I said before, it's about 2 weeks after the first day of your period. So try like crazy then. Best of luck to you!!!!

Name: Nadine | Date: May 18, 2005, 7:29
Answer: I came on my period on Saturday. I'm happy its come back but sad i didn't catch my ovulation date i became too relaxed and weren't having sex that often as i just couldn't be bothered. As soon as it comes back i'll be on top form i think it has more to do with my weight loss but hopefully the tablets will help this cycle be the one for me. Please God

Answer: Nadine, My first dr appt is actually in one week, May 31st. I can't wait. I am so excited. Not really to see the dr, just to maybe hear the baby's heartbeat. I have just recently started getting sick, but I'll take it!!! It's definetly not as bad as it was when I was taking metformin. But like I said, it's worth it. Best of luck Nadine and just keep trying and trying. You should be ovulating very soon, so good luck and keep writing.

Answer: Samantha.. I just read your post and cannot believe the Doctor told you that. I have PCOS and was put on Metformin in January. I am 5'6'' and 125 lbs, so by no means over-weight. That is incredibly insencitive of him. I have heard that Metformin will help you lose weight, but that is not the only reason why someone is put on it. I'm sorry that you had to deal with that. Now, with that out of the way! I am so glad to have found this website. No one knows what I am going through so it's nice to find a bunch of women out there in the same shoes. My husband and I have been trying for 13 months. I did one round of clomid before going on Met. SInce on Met i have done 3 rounds. I had a Progesterone test done yesterday to see if I have ovulated this time.. all the other times I have not. I'm very happy for the ladies that Met worked for and hope i am as lucky one day soon. Best of luck to everyone out there TTC!

Answer: Hi, I was diagnosed with PCOS. I started taking Metformin May 2004. I got pregnant by IUI in September but miscarried in October. My periods were very irregular. However, after the miscarriage starting in January I did start ovulating on my own. I have ovulated every month now except for March. I have no idea what happened there? My doctor said sometimes it can take 6 - 9 months to kick in. I guess so, it took me that long. Still no preg, still hoping.... The only side effects I had was having to go to the bathroom. Hope that helps.

Answer: hello. its my 31st day and no mens yet. im on metformin for 1 month with clomid on my 3/7 days. i have my pregancy test, but i got very light sign of strip on positive. does it mean i'm pregnant or not? pls pray for me. thanks

Name: Nadine | Date: May 25, 2005, 9:10
Answer: Marie if you got a strip for positive then your preg even though it was light it's still there good luck and take another one! I done an ovulation test last night which was day 11 of my cycle and it detected an lh surge which means i was due to ovulate within 24-36 hrs of doing it. I'm soooooo confused as that would mean that i ovulated on day 12 or something which is today. Is that poss? Anywho i had sex last night so hopefully i'm in with a chance. Can someone get back to me and educate me a little on the ovulation process as i hope it wasn't a fake result. Love and wishes to all

Name: Donna | Date: May 25, 2005, 13:41
Answer: Marie, If your test showed even a light strip, chances are you are 100 percent pregnant. My first test I took was very light, and since then I've taken 5 more tests, each which kept getting darker and darker. So I would recommend taking a few more in a few days. Nadine, if you were due to ovulate in 24 hours and you had intercourse yesterday, sperm will stay in the body for 24-48 hours, so you may have a very good chance of conceiving. good luck to all of you.

Answer: Samantha, I just read your post about the doc who was so rude. I myself am overweight, though I never used to be. Then I found out I have pcos with insulin resistance, and that is what made me keep packing on the pounds. I started it on the 5th of this month, and already have lost 7 pounds. To me it really has made a difference, although the nausea is rather annoying. Try to find a reliable doc who will do the proper testing for insulin resistant pcos, and who will treat you like a human. No woman deserves to be treated like that regardless of size. Hope things work out for you!

Answer: Hi Donna, My periods due on tuesday, so i'm playing the waiting game which is no fun i'm tempted to do a test but i'm trying to wait and be patient. I've been getting backache and i threw up last week and i only ever throw up if i drink too much so here's hoping. Please God. How are you and baby?

Name: Donna | Date: June 8, 2005, 10:43
Answer: Nadine, I've now started getting morning sickness, that lasts all day. It's weird cuz I'm almost 12 weeks along. Most people get sick at the beginning. I had my first dr appt last week and that made it real for me. Now my next appt is Monday where hopefully we can hear the heartbeat. I'm so excited. Well I'll be crossing my fingers you don't get your period on Tuesday. Good luck.

Answer: Donna you are such an inspiration, I have endo and PCOS and have just finished my first month on Met, my cycle arrived on day 33 which means I was only four days late compared to 10 or 11 days late. Its just good to know that someone got preg while on Met. Good luck with your baby :o)

Answer: it sometimes takes a week or two to get used to, some GI side effects, but it actually makes you feel better - no PMS, regulates hormones, etc. You'll get pregnant since you'll ovulate more regularly too.

Answer: Hello everyone, all your stories are extremely inspiring and it's great to find out that i'm not alone out there. pcos diagnosed May 6 and started Metformin. Still getting nauseaous and woozy, as i like to call it. But got my period on day 39 as apposed to day 48 or 76. My dr informed to stop metformin ASAP if i find i'm pregnant. But i am finding that many are still continuing to take it through the 1st trimester. This confuses me. I'm just at a point wear it seems everyone around me (friends, family) is pregnant or just had a baby. It pulls at my heart. And it makes me sick when i see a very pregnant woman with a beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other. Oh i told her a thing or two, but in the end...she'll do what she wants, right? Donna, I pray that we all are as lucky as you in succes, and i wish you nothing but complete health and best wishes for an easy pregnancy!

Answer: Hi, I have PCOS and have 2 kids(7 & 4), both were conceived using Clomid, I have been on Metformin for 3 .5 months, I went from 1000mg to 2000mg with no problems but stomach upsets are common. I have lost 5 kgs, my skin is clearer and now I may be pregnant (12 weeks) my boy is about to start school, scan on the 20th to confirm the 2 blue lines! Doctor said to stop the metformin now but I am scared it may harm the pregnancy, I seem to have problems towards the end and my babies stop growing. Has others continued to use Metformin thru out or have stopped it with no side effects? Thanks {:-)

Answer: I've been on Metformin for 1.5 months now, and i'm extremely anxious to get pregnant. I'm having a tough time knowing when i ovulate since my cycles are so darn irregluar. For a while i was 45 days, then went to 76 days and now , my first cylce after metformin it was on day 39. Do the cycles get shorter and shorter or should i expect it to stay around day 39? This might be an old wive's tale, but are there specific sexual positions before and after that can promotea pregancy? Any help would be great!

Answer: I'm wondering if there is anyone who is taking metformin in the absence of insulin resistance. I went off the pill 10 months ago. I had one period two months ago and this month I have spotted or bled for 21 days (still going on). Two separate ultrasounds have shown me to have clusters of cysts consistent with PCOS but I have not of the other obviouse systems. Sugar and hormone levels came out ok. I am about 20-25 lbs. overweigh. My dr. is trying me on metformin. I'm just looking for feedback or experiences?!?!? thanks!

I' have lost some weight from it, but it seems as though my weight has slowed down. Now, my question is when should I expect my cycle? Should I take a test to see if I'm pregnant? Someone please let me know.

Answer: Hi all. My period came on Friday 17th. So that was a 31 day cycle. Next month i have an appt to go on clomid the only thing is i'm really hoping that htis will work i can't see the metformin working on its own so i think i'll be waiting a couple more months before i get pregnant. I'm keeping my faith in the lordd but i'm becoming so anxious just wanting to experience being pregnant full term this time. I hear story of all you women who get pregnant after being on metformin for a couple months or for one cycle and i really wish that i could be as lucky as you. I know i'll be blessed one day soon but the waiting is killing me

Name: Layla | Date: June 20, 2005, 10:35
Answer: Thanks for the tip Drew! I actually took an ovulation test on Saturaday and my test line was waaaaay darker than the reference line, so hubby and I got busy and were busy this whole weekend, ha ha. Let's hope we get some good news out of this. Carmelle, my first period on Metformin was a total waiting game. It showed up earlier then before, but after the first one you'll have to keep track of your days till you get your 2nd cycle off of Met. It's a bit confusing i know, i still don't know if i'll be getting my period on day 39 or sooner, but i'm just waiting. If i go 2 weeks past day 39 i will take a hpt. I won't do it sooner cuz that whole negative sign thing has just put me off. Nadine, my prayers are with you and for all of us that are trying to start families. Just imagine how much love we will have to give when we each do have our own babies. And ladies, we will....that day will come for all of us, God willing.

Answer: Layla are you saying that you're not on met anymore? You mean I have to get off of met in order to see my cycle become regular?

Name: Drew | Date: June 20, 2005, 15:25
Answer: lol Layla....we were pretty busy too this weekend! Carmelle, I think what Layla was saying is that you have to have atleast two periods with the Metformin so you can start to figure out your cycle lengths. You have to stay on the Metformin till your doc says to quit, otherwise it won't work. Do not quit taking it. It does help to regulate your cycle. Hey Layla, what cd are you on? Are you setteling in for the 2ww? Good luck!!

Name: Layla | Date: June 20, 2005, 15:28
Answer: Hi Carmelle, I am still on Met. It's supposed to help become more regular. So i still have to be on it. But my dr recommends i stop it if i find that i become pregnant. Before Met my cycles ran 49+ days, then it jumped to a 76 day cycle. That's when i started Met on May 6 and so far i had a 39 day cycle. But i don't know if it will regulate me even more and bring the cycle down further to say less than 39 days. I'll just have to wait and see. My 2nd period on Met on a 39 cycle should fall on July 4th or 5th. We'll see. But i am keeping a close watch and count of my days. I hope this helps you to have a better understanding. I did so much research before understanding this myself.

Answer: Hi, I have a question I've been taking metformin for about 2weeks. I've been sick w/diaherra,nausea ,vomiting. Also have been cramping, and real sleepy, I also have pcos. My question to Donna is how will I know when I'm pregnant due to the same side effects for taking metformin? I'm 23yrs and have been trying for 7 months now! desperate for a answer!!!!

Name: Drew | Date: June 22, 2005, 13:53
Answer: lol Layla...you'll catch up on the slang quick! Actually I'll bump a thread for you with all those abbreviations! Cd is cycle day and 2ww is the 2 week wait. The period of time after you ovulate till af (aunt flo) is supposed to come. I'm on cd 17, so still have some time to wait. I hope this is the month for all of us!!! ~~~Baby Dust~~~ :)

Answer: ive been on metformin for about a month still feel sick from it my doc also put me on a low birth control to give my ovaries a break but i think we want to start trying to have a baby now and everyone is talking about clomid what is clomid and is it supposed to help you become pregnant than just metformin alone?

Name: Layla | Date: June 22, 2005, 15:57
Answer: Hey Drew...HA! what a great term that 2ww and what a horrible wait it is at the same time. Heck yea i'm on that blasted 2ww, lool. I am due for aunt flo (<~ i actually knew that term) July 4 or 5th. I'm getting LOTS of weird little cramping on either side of my pelvic area. I'm thinking it's my ovaries being forced to work. Since they haven't worked for so long they are putting up a good fight! Drew are you on Met? I just bought this 500p book that is AWESOME and actually tells me what i should be eating and what i should totally stay away from. I mean, certain things are just a little too strict but at least i know to beware right? The most heartbreaking thing is that i have to give up my most fave food, PB n banana on wheat toast, with a glass of milk. Apparently, milk is chock full of hormones that play havoc with your system and PB n Bananas play ping pong with your insulin levels. Adding milk makes everything just ferment in your system too!! ARRRGGGGHHHHH, is there any relief in sight?

Name: Drew | Date: June 22, 2005, 16:20
Answer: Well that was info I didn't know, thanx!! I knew that bananna's are hard on the insulin levels with the high amounts of natural sugar, but never knew about the hormones in milk! Milk is a main staple for me cause I get heartburn so bad, and pepsid and zantac, and all the acid reducers are no good when ttc aswell! Yeah, I'm on Metformin too, and my second month of Clomid. I'm up to 1700mg met a day (850 2/day) Hey, where can I find this book? I'm really trying hard with the weight loss thing, and getting healthier. I have had some weight loss with the met, but any other help would be great!!

Name: Layla | Date: June 23, 2005, 11:00
Answer: Hey Drew! I'm still feeling weird cramping....ugh! On top of this, i'm suuposed to be on vacation next week...oh well. Let's hope it goes away. For anyone interested, check out www.ovarian-cysts-pcos.com and click on the button on the right hand side that has the "PCOS diet book". There you will find a really informative book, (there are hardly any PCOS books out there that are THIS detailed) and it's on a special price right now. For me, it was well worth it. It described so many things that i thought were "healthy" when in fact not healthy for PCOS sufferers. It tells you what foods to avoid and what you should eat more of. It's pretty strict, but you can get lots of ideas, and they have a 30 day meal plan to help you out, LOTS of recipes for natural dishes including making your own mayo! I love it and i am still reading and referencing to it. I am trying my best to stay away from Milk and anything over processed or with additives or any sugar and/or sweeteners (stevia is really the only one you can have that is healthy). Of course i'll have a treat now and then, but if i know it's affecting my symptoms then maybe i won't. Chock full of info, 500 pages of it, and for only $12.95. But it is an E-book, so you'll have to print it off yourself, i did.

Name: Drew | Date: June 23, 2005, 11:47

Answer: Hey Drew....Going to NYC for a few days, visiting family, going to the beach. Have to get away and just relax. Besides, hubby's gonna take me shopping!! Woooo hoooo! I have a question though, how do you feel about continuing taking Met while prego? I mean, i hear so many different things, but if it won't hurt the baby and if one takes only like 500mg per day for the first 12-14 weeks...is it such a bad thing? Especially if it prevents miscarriage in lots of cases?Any opinions on this from anyone would be welcome!

Name: Drew | Date: June 23, 2005, 16:28
Answer: NYC, nice!! Have fun! I will be continuing to take met at least for the first three months. I looked it up, for when I finally do get pg, and everything I have seen supports staying on it atleast for the first little while. I'm taking no chances of losing a baby, specially one I tried so hard for!!

Name: Layla | Date: June 27, 2005, 12:01
Answer: HI Drew...It's such a debated issue. I wish there was more info out there. My dr suggested i not continue Met past 6 weeks. For some reason, i feel that taking it for the first trimester would actually be beneficial. But how do i make a believer out of my dr? I really don't want to risk a chance of losing a baby that i've been planning for, for so long. So, i am on a 1ww now..lol...are you? It's so freakin nerve racking and i keep telling myself that no, it won't happen. Only because i don't want my hopes to go up, but i also want to take a hpt, but it's way too early...oh it's just so darn confusing!!

Name: Sarah | Date: June 27, 2005, 13:08
Answer: I have PCOS and went on metformin to regulate my cycle and was pregnant in two weeks but our GP told us to stop taking it and we lost the baby at eight weeks. My OB said it was probably from stopping the metformin and said she keeps all PCOS patients who were taking metformin to concieve on it through at least the first trimester. Hope this info helps. And yes I was sick for a couple weeks but then it eased. Good luck!

Name: Drew | Date: June 27, 2005, 13:39
Answer: Hey Layla, I know the whole issue is crazy!! Its such a crucial decision it seems. I have at least a week to wait, more like 10 days for a true result. I have such a rotten cold right now, and dh was telling me how how heard your immune system can go down a bit in early pregnancy. So that got my hopes up. Then I went to Wal-Mart last night for vitamins and as I was standing there looking at all the different choices, this very pregnant lady comes around the corner looking for pregnancy friendly cold remedies!! That was so weird! Anyway, I kept saying I wasn't gonna get my hopes up, but I just can't help it!!

Name: Layla | Date: June 27, 2005, 15:27
Answer: Hey Sarah and Drew...Thanks Sarah for the info. It does seem to make sense to still regulate insulin levels even during the most crucial time of pregnancy. I'll just have to put my foot down when the time comes and explain it to my doctor. I hope the times comes soon. Does any know if there is a set amount of mgs of Met one should take during the 1st trimester? Drew, Man...you got me excited up there with you! Seriously tho, one just CAN'T help but daydream about the day you'll find out your are pregnant. I so look fwd to it happening to me (God willing). I'm seriously jealous of you having that cold if that's the case! I think i'll go sit real close to my co-worker that has a bad cold now. hehehe...

Answer: Ok, I'm feeling slightly neurotic!! lol I also said I wasn't gonna analyze every little symptom too but.... I'm having alot of cm, more than usual I think. But its white when its usually yellow. (SORRY!! Don't wanna gross you out) I mean there's lots of it and a little cramping. Dh works at the hospital and when I picked him up my gyn was there! Ok, I'm on a tangent now, forgive me lol! I'm definately staying on it the first trimester. The way I have it figured, if he says no, I don't think he will but if he does, he gave me lots of refills on it. I'll just keep refilling it at the pharmacy. It should keep me covered. If I am pregnant, I'm NOT losing another baby!! Christine, lots of luck to you! I know its helping me loose weight, and I ovulated last month. I'm sure I did this month cause I got my normal ovulation pains. Here"s hoping for us all!!

Answer: I have been taking metformin for about three years. I am pre-diabetic. I have no side effects. I just went for my annual yesterday, and I told my doctor that I would like to start trying for children soon, and i asked him if the metformin was dangerous, and he said no, and it will help with ovulation. I was so excited because I thought I would have to take insulin shots while pregnant. I would say, go for the metformin, I thoroughly trust my doctor's opinion on it. Good Luck!

Answer: Hi, i am 7 weeks plus pregnant? wonder, if i shld continue with metformin until 9 mths?

Name: Layla | Date: June 29, 2005, 9:08
Answer: Hi Faridah, I would consult your doctor first and see what he/she thinks. Personally, after much research and debate, I would continue at least until after the 1st trimester. I have read that women with PCOS are more prone to miscarrying within that timeframe and have read that taking Met actually helps. My doctor had told me to stop Met if i do get pregnant, but i will go against that advice when, (God willing) i do get pregnant. Many, many women have had successful pregnancies while on Met for the full 9 months or just the 1st trimester.

Answer: Hi Layla! I'm starting in with some cramping today, and its cd 25, so I don't think this is it. I'm still really tired, but I think that has alot to do with this cold. My fingers are crossed for you, this has to be it!! Lotsa luck and enjoy relaxing!

Name: Layla | Date: July 6, 2005, 11:49
Answer: Hey Drew, Any news on your end? Yesterday was cd 39 and i was supposed to get it but i didn't so excitedly i took a damn hpt and it came out negative. I kinda laughed it off and told myself it serves me right for thinking i could be prego. I guess i got emotionally carried away. But i still have NO sign of my period. I'm nervous that my body has reverted back to a longer cycle and now i'll be all screwed up again on counting days. Did i test too early? How long should i wait before testing again in case i don't get my period? This is so frustrating!!! And here i thought i had developed a close to normal cycle.

Name: Drew | Date: July 6, 2005, 12:39
Answer: Hi Layla. Wow, thats weird, almost the exact same thing is going on with me! I tested today, cd 31 in about a 33 day cycle. BFN of course. But I too am wondering cause if af is supposed to rear her ugly head by Friday, I'm feeling pretty good. No cramps, bloating, my boobs are sensitive but not sore. No sign of af at all!! (but that being said, how much you wanna bet I will have it by Friday lol) I was thinking maybe it was too early too. Then I got to thinking, with my daughter-who's 7 now, urine tests never showed up till I was 3 months. Maybe I will call my gyn's office for blood work. Here's hoping this isn't all in our heads!!! :)

Name: Layla | Date: July 8, 2005, 10:01
Answer: Hey Drew, Any new news? I decided to wait until next Friday to take another test. If that shows up negative, then i'll wait til Monday after to go get bloodwork. It's just so frustrating, i mean i took 2 hpt one on the cd39 (my due date) and one cd40 and both came out neg. I'm just tired of such dissapointment. So, i'll just wait it out i guess. Why did it take 3 months for your hpt to show +tive with your first child? Is this common with other women to not show a +tive when in fact they are pregnant? Are blood tests always accurate? Where's that damn cloud with the silver lining when you need it?

Answer: Hey Ashley, I been on Met for 3 months and nothing yet. Some are lucky to get pregnant 1 month into it. Some, can take years. I guess it just all depends on your own body's reaction to the meds. I've been ttc for 1 year already. I'm still trying to get my period to come on time. Good luck to us all.

Answer: i have been on metformin for about 3mos. and am not making much progress. i was just finally diagnosed with pcos (which i suspected was the problem) after ttc for 1yr. in the past year i have only had 8 periods and the last one ( while on the met) came after 70days! my dr now wants to start me on clomid, but i just found out my insurance doesn't cover it! so many roadblocks, but i'm still trying to stay positive!

Answer: I was dx with pcos in February of this year. Which I know now that I have had my whole adult life. I have never had a normal cycle and would go months without a period and then when I did have one I would have very heavy bleeding and clots so bad that I could not leave my house!! My doctor started me on Metformin 2000 mg a day on May 17. In June I had a period and it was normal. This month I had another period and was normal (28 day cycle). Now I am waiting to O after taking my first round of clomid 50 mg. with the Met. I am on cd 12. As for as the Met is concern I haven't had a lot of problems with it until this month. Been having a lot of GI problems and staying in the bathroom a lot lately. And I thought the bathroom trips wouldn't start until AFTER I am pregnant!!??? LOL Sending Baby Dusts we all get our little miracle soon!!!

Answer: my story is very similar. i'm certain i've had pcos all along- never been regular, missed almost a year before. but for me when i do get my period it is very light, just like a heavy spot and only for 3-4 days. it irritates me that i was never diagnosed until recently. now i'm on 1000mg of met and it makes me totally sick to my stomach and still having irregular cycles! it is reassuring to hear from others with the same problems.

Answer: Layla, you need to be taking your basal body temperatures to see if you are ovulating. If you ovulate, you will have a noticable rise in temperature. That way, they'll know if the metformin is doing any good, or if they should try to do something else to help you.

Answer: Hello! I have been ttc for over 6 yrs. now. My last period was in April and last week my GYN started me on Metformin. I started on Thursday and today I started spotting. Is it normal to start so soon after taking the medication. Also he wants me to start with 2 (500mg) tab. every day but because of the side effects i started my self out with one. My ? is should I stay on the 500 mg a day or take 2 a day on my second week? If i'm already spotting should the 1- 500mg tablet be enough to get my cycles regular?

Answer: Hello. New to this site and just found out I am 5 weeks pregnant! I got diagnosed with PCOS just on June 1st and started on Glucophage (generic Metformin) 850 mg twice/day. Fiance and I were not trying to get pregnant, but now this is a wonderful surprise. I am scared though, my OB said STOP taking the Glucophage asap, but I have read so many horror stories about miscarriages after stopping Met. Is there anyone out there who stopped Met early in the first trimester and carried full term? I am really worried about losing the pregnancy since it is still so early. I was NOT ovulating at all before the Mat and had about 4 periods a year. Any advice would be great--I hate to be worrying so much!

Answer: I am on Metformin and diognosed as pcos. In the past my period is always irregular. I can go a year without it. It was very uncomfortable to not to have it. I am taking 750mg of Metformin and I was surprised that after taking it for just 6 days my period came on the 7th day. This Met is really worked on me! I just need to wait when I would ovulate for my next cycle. I have no problems of taking it just a slight diarhea first day of it. Good luck to all of us who are trying to conceive! :-)

Answer: I recently went to a specialist after dealing with PCOS for years and I was boosted to 1500 mg of metformin and 100mg of clomid and I got sick. I went to the emergency room last night I got inflammation of my gall bladder which now scares me. Because I need these meds to help me get pregnant, but I also don't wanna damage any internal organs as well. But I am decreasing my metformin dosage down to 750mg a day instead I think that was just too much too soon.

Answer: I do not have PCOS, but my doctor put me on Metformin. My husband and I have been together for five years, and have not conceived. We have went through one round of Clomid/HCG/IUI, but even though there were three nice follicles, we did not conceive. This month, we tried Clomid again, but did not have the same response. On cycle day thirteen, the eggs were not very big, and my lining was a bit thin. On cycle day fifteen, there was only one somewhat developed follicle. The doctor recommended not doing the HCG/IUI. He started me on Metformin, on cycle day thirteen. He talked about taking one 500mg a day for a week, two a day for a week, and then finally, three a day. I took one 500mg with dinner, and felt fine, so I took two the next night. I still felt pretty good. So on the third night, I took all three, I was still okay, until after I had a bowl of cereal with milk, and a glass of orange juice the next morning. I was really sick to my stomach, I couldn't go to work. That night, I cut back to the two pills. The next day, I did not feel as bad, but have been trying to eat differently, toast, pretzels, ginger ale. Next time I start my period, the doctor mentioned trying something different, taking Letrozole instead of Clomid, while still taking the Metformin. He said the Metformin could help us conceive on our own, without Clomid or IUI. And if we do get pregnant, I should keep taking the Metformin, because of risk of miscarriage. In the mean time, the doctor said the follicle from this round of Clomid could come out in the next couple days, so my husband and I are giving it our best shot to conceive, without the HCG/IUI.

Answer: I started taking 1 - 500mg dose of metformin May of 2004 then upped to 2 a day in July of 2004. Then I got bumped to 3 a day in mid-August and wham! I got pregnant right away. However, I miscarried 3 weeks after I got a blood test confirming the pregnancy. I was about 5 weeks along. Side effects for me: nausea if I don't snack enough, gas, and diarrhea. Lovely, right?

Answer: Hi! I'm new to this site. I was diagnosed 5 months ago with pcos. I have not gotten my period since May. I just started Met. My dr. said take 1 500mg the first week, and then each week add a pill until I reach 1500mg. He said I should give it 3 months to see how it works on me. I am overweight, so I hope I lose some weight with this. I am up to 2 pills a day and I have to say the side effects are manageable. I'm just wondering when will I get a period? If I just started how soon will I bleed? Any answers?

Answer: HI I just wanted to share my experience with Met, I started it at the end of july I was prescribed 500mg 3x a day. I didn't follow that at first because I was very afraid of the list of side effects. I up'ed it to 3 a day starting monday and from that point on i have been very sick!!! I feel like I have constant motion sickness, headaches, diarrhea that keeps me up all night! I am eating less because I am always nauseaus, I only eat a bit so I can take my meds and that's all, then I also take clomid and that makes me dizzy too, I wouldn't be doing this if it wasn't for the possible outcome, I keep forcing myself to take this stuff because i know what it will result in a baby!!!! so I will continue and hopefully the side effects will go away and turn into preg side effects. baby dust to all of us~~~~

Answer: Barbara, I hope everything is alright with you. My GP told me when I was about 6 weeks pregnant to stop taking Metformin and we lost the baby. Our OB/GYN told us that could have been the cause and that new and recent studies are showing a link between miscarrying and stopping metformin. So I would get a second opinion!! And I hope you keep your baby!!

Answer: For those who have lost weight with Metformin, was it just the drug or did you also diet in order to lose it? I just started taking 500mg of Met and I had actually already started having AF (a little bit) on monday. I took the Met and now I feel AF coming down a lot (sorry if 2 much info). I'm wondering if it's already working...Has anyone else had the same results? Hopefully after AF is over I'll "get busy" when I think I am O'in and then theres nothing left 2 do but wait & see. The only thing is that since I justed started the Met I won't know my cycle and it could either be that the cycle isnt regulated yet, I'm not going 2 get AF or that I am pg = ] Lots of Luck 2 all TTC!

Answer: Jenny, I had to take the HSG test during my infertility work-up - it's not too bad - it was just a little uncomfortable for me. The doctors probably want to make sure your tubes are clear before they give you any medication to produce more eggs. I also wanted to mention to all of you wondering about staying on the metformin that I did stay on 500 mg of metformin per day during my 2 pregnancies. I had early miscarriages before I went on the metformin and as soon as I started taking the metformin I got pregnant and have had two healthy boys! My reproductive endocrinologist advised me to stay on the metformin because of my history of miscarriages. I know there's a lot of debate about this because there's not a lot of studies done on it, but it seemed like the best option for me at the time - and I'm glad I did. Believe me, I didn't think I would ever get pregnant and carry it through full term, but the metformin worked for me and I hope it works for all of you ladies as well.... Good luck to all of you!

Answer: Hi Kristi, I have a question for you. Were you given metformin because you had high sugar levels, irregular cycles, overweight etc? I hope this is not too personal. I was given metformin because of my sugar levels which is probably what is causing my irregular cycle and I am also overweight. I hope the metformin is the answer 4 me bc I really don't want to take too many medications although I will if I have to. Thx.

Name: Kristi | Date: August 31, 2005, 8:56
Answer: Hi A C, Actually, I was given the metformin because I have polycystic ovaries (I had a transvaginal ultrasound that showed I had cysts on my ovaries). I'm not overweight, but did and still do have irregular cycles. I did have gestational diabetes (high blood sugars) during my pregnancies though - so I'm probably at risk for developing diabetes later on.... Have you been diagnosed with polycystic ovaries? I know metformin has helped a lot of women with PCOS get pregnant and maintain the pregnancies....I hope it works for you!! I'll keep my fingers crossed!! :)

Name: A C | Date: August 31, 2005, 9:33
Answer: Good Morning Kristi. No I haven't been diagnosed with PCOS but I did happen to glance over at my Dr's paper work and as the diagnosis it said PCOS but she never mentioned it, weird right? I also had a vaginal u/s which showed two cysts. When I went to the Endo she was the one that mentioned the cysts but said it was perfectly normal. So I haven't really been diagnosed with it but I have a lot of the symptoms. Anyways this metformin is kicking my butt but I'll just take it if it's going to allow me to get pregnant. I've only been on it for about a week but had already started AF b4 I started the metformin, hopefully this will help me get pregnant soon. It puts me at ease when u say that your cycles are still irregular bc my flow doesn't even look like a normal one (sorry if TMI). Thx 4 crossing your fingers and I'll keep you updated. So you are TTC your third?

Name: Kristi | Date: September 1, 2005, 10:33
Answer: Hi A C, My cycles were very irregular and my flow was very light - around the time I got pregnant with my first son. I thought I had less of a chance to get pregnant because my flow was so light - but I guess that doesn't make a difference - at least for me it didn't. I also had a uterine fibroid removed 6 months before that, so I had multiple fertility issues. But the thing that made the difference for me was the metformin. We're not trying for a third baby - I'm getting older and we're more than happy with our two!! I really hope the metformin helps you get pregnant - how long have you been trying? We tried for 3 years before I finally took the metformin and got pregnant. Please keep me updated!!

Name: A C | Date: September 1, 2005, 21:43
Answer: Hi Kristi. I have had irregular cylces for atleast 4 years now and I just kept putting it off because I was happy not having to deal with AF every single month. I kept saying I had to go to the gyn but just kept putting it off until last year when I was ready to have a baby. I had problems with my insurance which stopped me from going to the gyn until july of this year. Since then I have been back & forth to the gyn and lastly to the Endo who put me on metformin. I can't explain to you, which I'm sure you know the feeling already, how much I want to get pregnant. I always knew I wanted to have a family but its like right now thats all I think about. Anyways I have only been on metformin for a week now and I am hoping to get pg soon. I know not everyone is the same but many women have said that within a month of being on met they were pg. It must be really nice to have your two children and be happy as a family, I hope your happiness lasts forever. I know my time will come I'm just very impatient. You are very strong, you tried for 3 years. It must have been pretty hard but I'm sure it was all worth it in the long run. How long after you were put on metformin did you get pg?

Name: Kristi | Date: September 6, 2005, 9:35
Answer: Hi A C, I was put on metformin the middle of December 2002 and I got pregnant on Christmas Eve - so I was only on it for about a week and a half before I got pregnant. I hope it works as fast for you!! I know what you mean about always thinking about getting pregnant - I was thinking about it ALL the time during the 3 years we were trying. My OB actually told me that I wouldn't be able to get pregnant at all because the estradiol level in my blood was too high - which is a sign that my eggs are too old. That didn't really make sense to me because I wasn't that old, so I did more reading on it and one article said that a high estradiol level can also be a sign of polycystic ovaries. That's when I decided to go to a reproductive endocrinologist and he put me on the metformin. So, I'll be thinking about you - believe me, I know what you're going through - your time will come. Let me know when your pregnancy test comes back positive!!! :)

Answer: How long did you stay on Metformin after you found out you were pregnant? My doctor said that he "has to recommend" stopping the Metformin after pregnancy occurs, but he said that if I were his sister he'd tell me to stay on the Metformin while pregnant--and YES...he does like his sister. Just Curious....

Name: Kristi | Date: September 6, 2005, 12:51
Answer: Just Curious, I stayed on the metformin (500 mg per day) during my entire pregnancies. I asked my reproductive endocrinologist if I should and he said he would if it were him. I know there's a lot of controversy about physicians telling patients to stay on metformin during pregnancy because there's not a lot of research on it yet, but from what I've read it does prevent a lot of miscarriages with no known harm to the babies. My two boys are very healthy. I did have 2 miscarriages before I started taking the metformin so, of course, I would recommend staying on it but everyone has to make their own decision - it seemed like the best option for us based on the information that we had at the time....hope this helps.

Answer: Wow Kristi you were really lucky to get pg so fast. Thanks for keeping me in mind and offering your story. Sometimes it is difficult to get someone who has gone through the same thing and is actually willing to talk about it. I have had AF for 16 straight so far and it looks like shes not leaving anytime soon. About staying on Met after getting pg I think I will push for the dr to let me stay on it because I would be devasted if I had a m/c and it seems many woman have had healthy babies while on it. Kristi, it seems you basically diagnosed yourself with PCOS. That's the problem with dr's today they are quick to answer with something negative and often treat you as you are wasting their time, I just hate that. 2000 mg of met a day is a lot considering I am taking 500 mg and it is kicking my butt. Anyways I will keep you updated and let you know as soon as I get my BFP = }

Answer: No, this is the first time I''m taking Met. Today I went to the dr. to confirm my miscarriage. There was no explanation of why this happened. My dr. suggested I take Femara. Her theory is, since I have PCO, my testostrone are more. By taking Femara (this is fertility drug) it produces more estrogen which would balance out testostrone...I'm still reacerching more info on this. I have heard a good PCO center in Gorgia - Atlanta. Has anybody undergone treatment there.

Answer: What is the most important information I should know about metformin? • A small number of people who have taken metformin have developed a serious condition called lactic acidosis that has been fatal in up to 50% of cases. Lactic acidosis has occurred most often in people whose kidneys were not working properly. Liver problems may also increase the risk of developing lactic acidosis. Stop taking metformin and call your doctor immediately if you experience a feeling of general discomfort or sickness; weakness; sore or aching muscles; trouble breathing, unusual drowsiness, dizziness or lightheadedness; unusual or unexplained stomach upset (after the initial stomach upset that may occur at the start of therapy with metformin); or the sudden development of a slow or irregular heartbeat. These may be signs of lactic acidosis. • Avoid excessive alcohol intake while taking metformin. Together, alcohol and metformin may increase the risk of lactic acidosis and hypoglycemia. • Metformin does not usually cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Nevertheless, hypoglycemia may occur, as a result of skipped meals, excessive exercise, or alcohol consumption. Know the signs and symptoms of low blood sugar, which include hunger, headache, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, a fast heartbeat, sweating, tremor, and nausea. Carry candy or glucose tablets to treat episodes of low blood sugar.

Answer: 7 weeks is really fast. I have been on Met for a month, I have an appt with my dr tomorrow. The only thing is that I havent' had the change 2 BD because I have had my menstruation for 30 days and counting. I do have the ovulation microscope and I have ovulated but can't do anything. I'm frustrated so I hope that now that the Met has brought AF down that it stops long enough 4 me 2 BD and get pg. Any more success stories like Marissas?

Answer: Hey girls! I hadn't had a period since 5/17/2005. Started metformin on 9/9/2005 for PCOS. Still NOT pregnant, still haven't started my period. I do keep spotting just a tiny bit like every couple of day. Do I need my dosage increased or is it possible that i am pregnant? I have heard some people spot in early pregnancy. Or maybe its just me hoping!

Answer: Hi everyone. I am so excited to find this board. I must tell you I have been to hell and back with my miscarriages. I have PCOS and have miscarried 5 times. The worst ever was when I was 5 1/2 months pregnant, but I lost her due to a weak cervix. My other miscarriages have been between 4 and 8 weeks. My doctor has bugged me about Metformin for years but after the initial dose, I couldnt take the pain so I stopped, which I regret. The only way I can get pregnant is through IVF. I miscarried this July and decided to start a fresh cycle last month. This time I played everything by the book. Right now I am on 750 mg of Metformin and I asked permission to also take a baby asprin every day.Well I had my IVF procedure done last month and today I found out I AM PREGNANT. But I am very worried that I will miscarry early, the only difference is that I am doing the Metformin and baby asprin, I hope this helps me maintain my pregnancy. Oh for all of you having problems taking Metformin, I found something that finally worked for me and didnt upset my stomach. I eat dinner around 7 oclock pm and right after my very last bite of food I take the Metformin. I have done this for about two weeks and have yet to have stomach cramps and naseau like I used to. This has really helped me.I hope this helps you guys and if you have any questions about fertility feel free to asked me, I have been through about everything. Here is my email address dexdi@hotmail.com just put Metformin int the subject so I know not to delete it. I am really glad to have found this board. I wish everyone well, including myself.

Answer: Has anyone had the problem of having blood in your stool while taking Met? I have been taking it for 2 months now and when I get the bad side affects with the stomach cramps and all and I use the bathroom there is usually blood with it.

Name: Julie | Date: October 24, 2005, 14:25
Answer: Is it red blood??? If it is red, its probably less concerning, but the metformin may be irritating your intestines (severly it sounds like). If it is black and tarry, that is a different story, either way, see your Doc. Good luck!

Name: DIANA | Date: October 24, 2005, 20:30
Answer: I GET HEMMOROIDS WHILE I AM PREGNANT AND THEN THERE IS BLOOD IN MY STOOL, BUT I DONT THINK ITS FROM ME TAKING METFORMIN.

Name: Yes... | Date: October 24, 2005, 20:42
Answer: The blood is red and it could be irritation because it seems like there is blood whenever I have the worst stomach cramps and when I go a lot. I'm not pregnant so it has to be from the irritation the metformin is causing.

Answer: Hi, i was told at the age of 14 that i had PCOS at that time i was put on Glucophage (1000 mg) a day. I stopped takeing them when i was about 17. It was a few years after that i got married and at 21 we decited we wanted to attempt to have children. My DR. put me on Metformin (1000 mg) a day. I have been takeing it now for about 6-7 months and nothing. However, this month i was suspose to start my period on the 6th, the 8th and 9th i was spotting very lightly and that evening the spotting just stopped. No sign of period anywhere. I took a preg. test this evening knowing that spotting is a sign of conception and it read negative. Most everyone here who has concieved are on a higher dosage of Metformin sould i consider talking more of this med. to concieve? Or is it possible to be preg. and the test not read correctly this early on?

Answer: Hi everyone...I'm new to this site but it looks like it will really help. Question: I went to the OB cause I hadn't had my period for 4 months. He told me that since I"m overweight it will most likely make it hard to conceive, and said that the missed periods were probably due to increased blood sugar level. He tested me and my sugars were high, now, from one test, he thinks that I am diabetic and is sending me to my family doc for diet and exercise counseling for diabetics and has not explained what happens next as far as the infertility. He mentioned metformin, but last said that he wanted to see if my family doc would give it to me...So, I'm so confused. I get it that it's important to make sure that my levels are good for my own benefit, but getting pregnant is also a priority for us. Anyone else been referred to thier family doc for thier metformin? Any suggestions for me on how to handle my OB? Thanks.

I am kind of confused about it, I told her that my husband and i want to have a baby so much and we do not want delay at all. I do not know what to do she told me that this is going to regulate my period and hormones but i am afraid that this will make it worse after i stop the pill. Does anyone taking a pill together with metformin if so how long do you have to take it for? Thanks.

Answer: Hello ladies, i am new here i have been on metformin for about a month now. i was wondering to all the women who got pg really fast did you have a period first or did it just make you ovulate and you didnt even know it? also i take 1500 mg a day now i hope that it works good luck to everyone

Name: AC | Date: November 18, 2005, 19:26
Answer: Erika, the Metformin will control the blood sugar levels which will make it easier for you to get pg. In other words I know getting pg is a priority but if your sugar levels are high you need to lower them in order to be able to get pg. For many women once they take Metformin they are able to conceive. I know he must have left you in the air about the infertility issue but by referring you to your family doc for diet and excercise and perhaps putting you on Metformin he is saying that once those things are taken care of, you will probably get pg quicker. Met also helps with weight loss. I am going through the same thing as you. When I went to my gyn she also left me in the air but now, after a couple of months, I know what she meant. She referred me to an endocrinologist who put me on 500 mg of Met daily.

Answer: hi, i was diagnosed with pcos in June & was gutted just always thought id have a baby easy, now I can't I want one even more, its hard not to think of anything else especially as everyone I know seems to be pregnant which is fantastic but it makes me long to be pregnant even more. I was put on a course of clomid in June which did'nt work and made me quite ill, now im on Metformin I started on 500mg in October than then after 7 days my dose went up to 2000mg which at first was a killer but have slowly sussed it out, as to what I can and can't eat and now finally in my 5th and 6th week I feel fine, so hang in there if our suffering it does get better. Atfer 8 days of starting met I had a period im now on day 34 and nothing so have'nt got a clue whats going on, im seeing my gyn 30/11 so if I have'nt had a period will take a preg test the day before, but having read this message bored I will defo carry on with some kind of dose of met if I got preg. So glad I found this message bored its so nice to hear success stories its gives me hope, good luck to everyone your all in my prayers, oh just a quick question how often have you been told to have sex, cos we've been trying to have sex every day but I read everyother day is fine is this right? cos I need more sleep.

Answer: AC, thanks for the advice and words of encouragement. I did make it to the family doc last week and it turns out that I have PCOS plus she said that "technically" my blood sugars were high enough to be able to say that I am a diabetic. But she said that with exercise and diet, I could control it and that if I were able to lose some weight, it may not end up being an issue at all. That being said, she also but me on 500mg of Metformin. Just wondered...how long till you find out if it's working at that dose or if you need a higher dose? When can you start checking to see if you are ovulating? Or do you just wait till see if you have a period? I'm kinda confused on the timelines here. Can anyone help with their experiences? Another question: Can anyone give me any advice on ways to help to stick to the diets and exercise? It's always been hard for me and any support would be great! Thanks everyone...especially you, AC...for getting back to me. Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Name: AC | Date: November 22, 2005, 19:28
Answer: Erika, I don't really know how you know its working at that dose but I'm assuming that when you go for a follow up if your levels are still high, they might up the dosage. I wondered the same because I noticed many woman are on 1000mg some even on 2000mg but I was started off at 500mg. About the testing for ovulation: in my case it is weird. I have been checking and sometimes I ovulate right after my flow instead of on day 14 or after. I think this might be because my flow still isn't regulated yet so it might take a couple of months of being on the Met for me to ovulate right, if that makes any sense. I have read that sometimes checking when you ovulate is not as useful for woman with PCOS bc our cycles are usually all over the place. I would check everyday. Now about the diet and exercise I really can't help bc thats one part that I haven't been able to keep up with. The RE told me the South Beach Diet is good for those taking Met, so maybe you might want to try that.I have been trying so I hope I get a + for christmas. Anyways have a nice thanksgiving and hope you keep posting experiences w/Met.

Answer: Hey- I just started metformin, I am starting at 500 mg and then increase every 2 weeks until up to 2000 mg. I have pcos and with that insulin resistance. All of my sisters also have that and are metformin, however, I am the only one who is trying to get pg. I have gone to an RE and done all the expensive drugs but am now moving to this due to can't afford to do all the expensive drugs right now. Am also looking to stick to the diet as I am just a little over weight (about 20 pounds). Erika- My sisters and I are all on a diet of 5 small meals a day and limiting carbs to 30 grams per meal and must eat at least 2-9 grams of protein per meal. It is working for all of them, they have each lost weight at the rate of 2 pounds per week. I am just starting the diet today so I am not sure how it will work for me.

Answer: Hi Everyone: I've been with my husband for going on 5 year and we have not concieved yet. I was just diagnosed with PCOS Dec 5th by my PCP and began taking Met on Dec 7th. Hopefully I can go through this with you all because I can't really talk with other people except my hubby. I am 23 and want a baby soo... bad. I am scheduled for a transvaginal ultrasound in a week by my fertility spec. In Jan. I go back to see the results of all the bloodwork and ultrasound he took. I wish things would just speed up but I can't go to the Doc. off. often because I work a 9-5. Many of the these stories have been inspirational and the rest have been comforting just knowing that I'm not alone in my baby journey. For those who have had IUI an IVF, if you don't mind answering, what were the cost?

Name: Mega | Date: December 15, 2005, 15:34
Answer: Hi Metgirl. I have been doing IUI, I'm about to start my 3rd cycle. I have PCOS & have been taking Metformin (1500 mgs) Clomid & the trigger shot too. The female cost of the IUI at my RE's practice is $150, then there are costs for the sperm washing too, but my DH's insurance has been covering that. I have coverage for my u/s so that helps too. The drugs cost around $40 to $60 for the Clomid, & $65 for the Ovidrel trigger shot. All things considering, IUI is a lot cheaper than IVF. Good luck, & baby dust!

Answer: Hi Cassie, Im in the exaact same boat, im soooooo confused, I was diagnosed with pcos in the summer and started Metformin in October, just found out im Pregnant approx 8 weeks, im over the moon but don't no what do as I rang my Gyny to tell her my news and she told me to stop taking my Metformin, I was shocked cos I read the stories on this site previous and really did'nt expect her to tell me that, I did question her though and she told me that there was no evidence that Metfromin harmed the baby but also no evidense that it helped with the pregnancy. I went private to see this gyny, she has an excellent reputation and is suppose to be one of the best in her field so I feel I should take her advice, but its such a gamble. One thing I have done off my own back is come off them slowly, im slowly reducing my dose, I was on 2000mg, I took 1000mg for a few days and now am taking 500mg, but my gyny wanted me just to come off all metformin straigtht away, but I decided to do it this way., but I don't no what to do, im dreading stopping the 500mg and putting it off, im seeing my GP on Tuesday but there is no point asking him cos he's rubbish and I expect he'll just agree with my gyny, What are you going to do?

Answer: I haven't been on this site since nov 28th. I'm now 26 weeks along. I was trying for 8 months with no luck. The first month i tried metformin 500mg once a day i did get pregnant w/i two weeks! i was really sick while taking those. I decided to stay on the drugs until 13 weeks and haven't been on them since. I'm proud to say that i'm carry a healthy baby boy. I was told that i would have some problems concieving children but i guess things happen for a reason. I also have PCOS. Don't give up. I was about to until it just happened. I didn't do anything different. Good luck.

Answer: Hi Stef...it's good to hear from you. I'm right behind you, I'll be 26 weeks tomorrow! Having a precious baby girl. However, I DID stay on the Metformin, 1000mg daily--but everything looks good and I'm feeling great! I'm so glad you're doing well!

Answer: I have PCO and had been trying to conceive for 3 years. My doctor put me on both Metformin and Clomid. But I did a bit of reading and found out the people with PCO increase their odds of conceiving if they excercise, lose weight and eat a low carbohydrate diet....all of these are supposed to regularize your hormones. Well, after being on Metformin, and CLomid and doing about 5 IUIs, I decided to take a two month break before trying IVF. And guess what? During the two month break (I was still on Metformin only) ...I got pregnant! It must have been the 45 minutes of daily walking combined with my low carb diet and the meds that did it! I wish you all the best in your efforts to get pregnant!

Answer: Hi, I was diagnosed w/PCOS in Sept. after 11 yrs ttc, and have been taking metformin for 6 Months. I am currently on 1500 mg. a day. I had some side effects at first but Doc told me to ALWAYS take with meals. Since then I have had no noticible side effects except a little gas. I am still hopeful and wish luck to all. Hope this helps.

Answer: I'm diagnosed w/pcos - long cycles w/late ovulation and defective luteal phase (less than 10 days). I started 1500mg/day metformin in late Nov 05. Positive pregnancy test end of January. I am now in week 8. I also attribute it to Clearblue Easy fertility monitor - i knew exactly when to do the babydance. I think the metormin let it happen and the fertility monitor let me take advantage of it. Side effects were mild and worth it, and disappeared after a couple weeks (bit of nausea & diarrhea). I'm still in the high-risk weeks, so we'll see if it "sticks" - i've had so much trouble getting here that i'm unwilling to count my chickens....

Answer: I just wanted to say you guys give me a lot of hope. I have never been able to keep a pregnancy. I did a lot of testing and one thing my doc found was that i had high insulin so I have been taking metformin for about 2 weeks now with no side effects. I also have endo and have had 2 surgeries for that. I am really hoping this works. Though i hate the waiting and hoping and disappointment maybe one day it will pay off. I am also supposed to have an endometrial biopsy in April, my immunoligist thinks i have elevated NK cells which are normally in the uterus at certain levels to help protect the baby but sometimes misinterpert the baby and attack which is what he says he thinks is my case and I have always thought for the last 10 years that that my body was attacking my babies and killing them but i really hope that is not what it is and the metformin works, i guess i have another month or so of trying with just the metformin then my doc wants to put me on Humira, which I dont know about but would like to find someone who has already taken it ? Well, good luck to all of you and i hope for each of you that you get that BFP and have a happy healthy pregnacy :)

Answer: I am on 1000mg of met and 150mg of clomid and I am also on provera. This is the first time that I have been on all three. I would like to know WHEN exactly are you suppose to take the provera. Your "natural "period isnt suppose to start until 28 days or so after the last one and provera usually works within a couple of days after using it. So my question is should I be using provera about the time I finish clomid or a couple of days before my period is do?

Prior to using it my cycle was very sporadic I never knew when one would hit or if perhaps I had conceived, after about 6mnths my cycles became more predictable and within 9mnths they were 28 days each. I have just gotten a positive result on the ept test. I'll be seeing my dr. soon. Good luck

Answer: hi. I was diagnosed with PCOS in 12/05 after being off the pill for 1 year and having very irregular periods (35-50 days), small weight gain and major fatigue. Started Metformin 1500mg/Clomid that month and my periods became more regular. Had an ultrasound in March that showed ovarian hyperstimulation from the Clomid, so went off it but wound up getting pregnant in 4/06 after 18 months of trying. Now 9 weeks pregnant and my OB said she wanted me to go off the Metformin at the end of the first trimester. Have been reading lots of articles and studies on the benefits/risk of discontinuing Metformin once pregnant. Also plan to double check with an endocrinologist before discontinuing. I want to follow my doctor's advice, but my gut is telling me to stay on it, maybe at a lower dose. Any thoughts?

It was previously impossible for me to lose weight no matter what the drs did or try but have been losing weight on metformin... when i first started taking metformin it would make me nauseaous and tired, but found if i took it with my meals I was ok... also carry some sugar lollies with you incase you get light headed (the diabetes part)... I recommend it though, it has worked wonders for me so far... just the conceiving part left to achieve!

Answer: I just started taking metformin about 6 weeks ago. I too have PCOS. In the beginning it made me tired and a little sick on my stomach. My doctor has put me on this to help me get pregnant. I am confused because I have heard clomid is the better drug. Does anyone have information on this? has anyone gotten pregnant from using metformin? starting to get sad :(

Answer: I have PCOS, clomid didn't do sqwat for me... I developed good follicles and ovulated with clomid and did IUIs but never got pregnant. Then I quit clomid because it thins out the uterus lining too much...so I went on metformin and did IVF and got pregnant. I have read that clomid doesn't work well with pcos patients, i have heard that metformin and injectionables are better. Keep taking the metformin, it will generate better egg quality, but it takes a few months to do that. Good luck...

Name: aurban | Date: March 21, 2007, 13:05
Answer: Thank you so much linds99! How long did you take the metformin before you got pregnant? It's so hard...all of my friends are getting pregnant and here I am! Not pregnant and have been trying for so long!

Answer: I have been on metformin for 1 1/2 years, and am currently still on the drug and almost 5 months pregnant. I was prescribed the drug specifically for fertility reasons (as a result of PCOS) and was able to get pregnant within 6 months of trying while on the metformin. I did a lot of research and consulted several doctors, and have decided to stay on metformin throughout the pregnancy because in tests done with large samples of pregnant women in Colombia and India (there are no tests of metformin on pregnant women in the U.S.) staying on or actually GOING on metformin in pregnancy reduced the rate of miscarriage signficantly. So - there are always risks - but the newest information out there seems to indicate staying on it is safer than going off. Just my two cents!

Answer: metformin is a Class B drug, which means it is safe for you use in pregnancy. It also wards off gestational diabetes, which is prevalent in PCOS, even thin PCOS women, not just overweight. Several women on this forum I have read conceived with metformin and delivered healthy babies, several... I just wish they'd all return to let us know how they are doing!

Name: thayward7 | Date: August 10, 2007, 21:54
Answer: Different doctors have different views about Metformin during pregnancy. Some have women take it for first trimester only, some have women take it for the whole pregnancy, my RE had me stop taking it as soon as the heartbeat was seen on ultrasound. I would check with your doctor. Congratulations! Smiles, T

Answer: B I was on Metformin for about a year for PCOS, I think its a wonder drug... I found it impossible to loose weight before Metformin even with a super healthy lifestyle and lots of exercise... The only side effect I found is that you have to slowly introduce it otherwise it makes you nauseaous (and then u get excited that your pregnant)... your dr will probably start you on a low dose then bring it up over time... I found having it in the middle of my meals helped to stop the nausea, but it went away after a few months... I did fall pregnant thanks to Metformin and stayed on a low dose for first 12 weeks and safely made it into second trimester... am now 15 weeks... best of luck!

Answer: I actually just delivered a "Metformin Baby" who is 11 weeks old! I have PCOS and have for my entire adult life, my hubby and I have been married 18 years, I went on Met because I wanted to conceive and thought it might help, and Im getting closer to 40 so I thought I would give it one more shot. I started Met in March and found out I was preg in Nov. I did have some tuff side effects at first - nausea and sick feeling, but I started taking it at night and it subsided. I did have diarrhea but that to got better- I reccomend it, it was work having my daughter after 18 years of marriage and Im back on it now to try again. I also went on a diet and lost 57 pounds while on it. I loved it!!!

Answer: I have PCO and am Insulin Resistant and started taking Met last March. I was 38 and wanted to ttc once more before I hit 40. I managed with diet and exercise to loose almost 60 pounds and in September I started having cramps which really scared me. I took Fertility drugs in the 90's and know that they can increase one's risk of ovarian CA. To make a really long story short, I continued to cramp once a month and since I hadn't ever My OB decided to check it out. She scheduled an ultrasound and I finally got to go in November. After the ultrasound, I sat in disbelief after My doc told me I was 5 weeks pregnant. The cramps were ovulation. I have never ovulated before so I didn't know what I was feeling. I took the Met my entire pregnancy, My Kinsley is 3 months old and the joy of our lives!!!
