Answer:
metformin is a diabetic drug and is not used for infertility. Both my OB and my R.E.told me it COULD help only if help is needed. There is a higher chance of pregnancy with it but not by much. I am on metformin as well. I was put on it because I could be insulin resistant and to see if it would help me in conceiving. My cousin was also put on it but to see if it would help her not produce so many eggs when she went through the infertility shots. It didn't help her much and she had to keep canceling her cycles because of to many eggs. Good luck

I have been on Metformin for a few months now after 5 long years of infertility. I have only been able to take 1000mg a day and I am trying to make it up to 2000mg. Just yesterday I went up to 1500mg. It tends to make me very nauseous. I have poor egg quantity and high FSH levels. I am praying Metformin will be my miracle drug! I have been thru many IUI's, 3 IVF's and 2 Laparoscopy's.

My doctor put me on Metformin in Sept and I took it for 2 months and nothing happened. I went to the doctors in the middle of Feb. and she put me back on the med's for 3 times a day which is 1500 mg. My doctor said I should be pregnant within 3 months. I hope so. I am so excited after 3 1/2 yrs of trying. If I take it everyday like I should I hope it works for me. How long Joanne have you been trying?

Hi! I was put on Metformin for PCO. After 2 cycles I became pregnant but unfortunately miscarried at 8 wks. I will be trying again this month with Metformin and Clomid and baby asprin. My doc wants me to take Metformin for the first 12 wks of pregnancy and some women take it their entire pregnancy. There really is no risk to a developping baby from the research I've done, but I am not a doctor. It worked for me within two months after 9 months of trying without it! Good Luck!

I started Metformin 3 1/2 weeks ago, but was also on it several months ago for 2 months. I started having periods more often. Although I didn't get pregnant I have done a lot of reading and from what I've read a lot of women get pregnant within 6 months. My doctor is going to put me on Clomid on my third cycle this time around. I got pregnant once about 3 years ago on Clomid but miscarried. After that, Clomid did nothing for me as well as Clomid + shots. I have higher hopes for the Metformin since I have had good results with periods coming. I am also looking into Progesterone cream as women with PCOS have higher miscarriage rates and this has been known to help.

I was diagnosed with PCOS in December 04 and have been on 1500mg of Metformin, my periods have started to become regular which I am hoping is a good sign, my doctor has told me it should take about 6 months to see any results, so we live and hope. Good Luck to all of you.

I just started taking Metformin this past week. I have been trying to get pregnant for six years. My husband and I are going through the adoption process, but we still have hopes of getting pregnant. We are keeping our fingers crossed about this metformin. I feel somewhat better about taking it after reading everyones feed back. Does anyone have mood swings (like when you are on Clomid)? Thanks and God Bless

On March 30, it will make me being on Metformin for 8 weeks. My last period was on Jan. 25th. My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for 7 years now and we have been together for 11 years. I don't know if I should take another hpt or not, in fear that it will be "NEGATIVE" again. I have been pretty regular for the last 2 years. I have not had any signs of being pregnant. The only thing wrong with me now, after getting the Metformin into my system, is that I have been getting lightheaded more than normal, and I get extremly tired of the evenings after I get home from work. Let me know how long it takes you guys to get pregnant after taking Metformin..Let's keep our fingers crossed for each other...thanks...

Hey. I've known about my PCOS since...2000. I was put on Metaformin/Glucophoge almost immediately. I was told if I wanted to get preg. I would need to be off this drug for about 6 mths before this could be safely accomplished; so reading many of the entries leaves me disconcerted. I have not been taking metaformin for over 8mths, and I just missed my period. I was wondering if anyone knows if home preg. kits work for pcos patients. I was concerned because of the crazy hormones involved with pcos. Does anyone have a possible idea?

Answer:
Renee, Metformin is not a pregnancy inducing drug. The common name for Metforming is Glucophage. Metformin shuld ONLY be taken as directed. All it does is help regulate your insulin levels by making your body receptive to the insulin you are making. That's all. It scares me to read that you are just Upping your dosage like that. Unless your DR told you to do so, i would NOt. You are also onyl supposed to take two doses per day, with food. Having food on your tummy will keep the nausia at bay.

Joanne, sometimes a metabolic or Thyroid disorder can cause your symptoms. If that is the case Metformin will do you little good, if any. You should have your serum TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone). checked. An endocrinologist can accomplish those tests for you.

Have been trying for a baby for 4 years, diagnosed PCOS in September '04 and have been on 1500mg Metformin since- that's 3 times a day with food. Side effects as described by others do improve with time. Periods are more regular, and have lost over a stone as my appetite is less. Also started IUI 2 months ago-no pregnancy yet, boo!. Has Joanne done her preg test yet?, home tests on the whole are very accurate, whether you have PCOS or not. I am a doctor myself and so aware that the use of metformin is out of licence and not known to be safe in pregnancy, but if you have PCOS and insulin resistance then in actual fact it is probably making your body more "normal" to take it than not, best to discuss it with your own physician. Good luck everyone, this infertility business is very hard at times, but we have to keep hoping :-)

I am in a free trial to determine whether Metformin or Clomid or both is best in helping women with PCOS get pregnant. I won't know what I am on until after the study. I just upped my dosage of Clomid to 150, however do not have the side effects I usually get. The metformin usually causes me to have upset stomach's if I don't eat with it. I have been part of this study since December 2004, almost three months, and no results. I am not even ovulating. :(

Hello! I recently started taking metformin after about 6 years of infertility. I feel fine on it, except for I have bad mood swings. I have done 4 cycles on clomid in the past, 1 laproscopy, 3 IUI's, and one month on injections. I am in the process of recieving my first IVF as soon as my period starts next month. I hope it works, but I am worried because my doctor says the success rate here in Japan is only 25%. Does anybody know if age has anything to do with the rate? I am 24 years old, and I am hoping that changed the rate somewhat for me. April

I have been on Metformin since Feb. 2nd..My last period was on Jan. 25th, so I have not had a period since I started metformin..My periods have been regular until the end of Dec. when I thought I was pregnant. I wasn't. Then on the 11th of Jan. I went back to the doc and I had a cyst to rupture on my left ovary. So, they told me that I had PCOS and that is why I was NOT getting pregnant..They said that the Metformin would increase my chances of ovulating and getting pregnant. Metformin is all that I have been on so far. I go back to the doc on the 30th of this month for my 8 week checkup on being on Metformin..I am hoping and praying that because I have not had a period since Jan. 25th that I may actually be pregnant..I have not had any signs though. I have been very, very moody and extremely tired of the evenings..Let me know how your appt goes with your doc...Thanks..

Answer:
Kerri-Lynn, I was diagnosed with PCOS the beginning of Dec. '04. I started taking Metformin (1500mg a day) right away. Prior to this I took Clomid by itself for six months with no success at all. In addition to the Metformin, my RE also prescribed Femara instead of Clomid with the intention of trying IUI. My first cycle with the two drugs was a bust, I did get the HCG trigger shot but we had no luck on own own. For what should have been my second cycle on Femara I ended up spending the month on the pill because my cysts were huge and not going away like they are supposed to (drs had no explanation). This past cycle I started with Metformin and Femara, on day 10 I added Estrace (estradiol) since my estrogen levels are low. On day 12, I had one really good looking follicle and we went ahead with the trigger and IUI on day 13. On day 14 I added Prometrium (progesterone) to help support any possible pregnancy and keep my levels up. I couldn't stand the wait so I did my first HPT (First Response) on Monday (day 26, 13 dpo) and got a faint line. The line was slightly darker yesterday and again today. I was scheduled to talk to my RE today about my husband's test results and to plan our next steps and instead ended up going for my first of the betaHCG tests and so far so good. Now we have been extremely lucky in all of this (and I pray we will continue to be) and I happen to have a great doctor who got the medication mix right. I hope this helps and that you will be as successful as we apparently are.

Hi all. I have been on Metformin for PCOS since mid December '04. I started having regular, 30-35-day periods after I worked up to 1500 mg. a day, however, the doctor's office was convinced that I would have a hard time getting pregnant if I didn't get my cycles up to the average 28-day cycle (with additional drugs). Wrong! A 35-day cycle is fine as long as you understand when you ovulate and time intercourse accordingly. I am now a few weeks pregnant without the intervention my doctor was recommending. Additionally, my husband has a very low sperm count, yet we got pregnant naturally. I hope this encourages some of you. Some of the comments below make me wonder if your doctors are not explaining the phases of your cycle to you (as mind did not). I highly recommend "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler. This book explains how to chart your temperature to determine when you ovulate, what cervical fluid does and should look like, and much more.

I have been on metformin for 3 months now - my last 2 periods were almost on the same day 27 then 28 days. That's good considering they ran from 24 days to 38 days... I am considering adding clomid to the mix. We have only been trying for 3 months so I am not too worried yet. Also, a note to everyone - this PCOS thing runs in the family. Two of my cousins & me have been diagnosed and our 3 mom's are sisters - one of which waited till late twenties and it took a few years to get pregnant. So ask your relatives - I could answer a lot of questions. Don't wait to be test either - just pay the money. Don't spend years feeling like a failure. Love & Luck to all!

I am a diabetic with pcos who had been trying for 12 yrs with no luck,I was giving up hope as I am in my late 30's.I was referred to a fertility clinic but unable to lose enough weight for them to allow treatment. I used to ovulate on average eevry 3-4 months I was started on metformin and I started to ovulate every 2-3 months but could not tolerate the side effects of gastric upset etc..and had to stop, this year jan 05 I re-started metformin slow release/glucophage xr instead and tolerated it very well, I became pregnant and am now 9 weeks pregnant, I am staying on metformin to help reduce the higher miscarriage rate pcos patients have.My diabetic clinic was very unhelpful, the doctor practically shouting at me because I wanted to stay on the metformin. But the ob/gyn specialist care centre I was referred to were approachable I am continuing on the metformin and will then supplement with insulin I say listen to your body, I ate only organic food, and followed a strict low glycaemic diet I took linseed/flaxseed oil supplements with an organic multi vitamin & minerals ,and extra folic acid I took advice from toni weschler- 'taking charge of your fertility' book. I stopped caffeine ie no coffee/choccys ,..stopped alchohol.. I bought hundreds of ovulation test strips when you get to being desperate, you will try anything and everything But you have to be positive and be strong and believe I am now still not believing I am really pregnant, I did 16 pregnancy tests !! I am very nervous something will go wrong, we had a scan the other day and to see the little heartbeat was very emotional for me and my husband. I say give everything a try- what do you have to lose And best of luck to all you girls out there !

I have been taking clomid with no success of ovulation. I started with 50mg and on up to 150mg with no success. I am now trying 1000mg of metformin with 100mg of clomid. I started the metformin a week prior to my cycle and then in combination with the clomid for the first week of my cycle. I will have blood work to check for ovulation on 5/11. I am also using a clear blue easy plan ovulation monitor to predict ovulation. Neat device, great if you have no idea when you ovulate because you are irregular.

I was diagnosed with insulin resistant PCOS and put on metformin six weeks ago to get pregnant. I got AF immediatedly and was wondering if any one else on Metformin had false pregnancy symptoms. I still have three days to AF but for a week now I have had nothing but nausea, I crave toast and water only, disharge, painful and swelling breasts, my basal is up, headaches, and back pain. I'm trying not to get too psyched about pregnancy so let me know if any of these could be med side effects. Thanks

I was diagnosed pcos about a year and a half ago. I was then started on Metformin 500mg twice a day, but it did nothing. On the 5th I started my first cycle of Clomid and Metformin 500mg twice a day for one week, 500mg three times a day for one week, then up to 800mg twice a day for as long as needed. Has anyone been on a regimin close to this with positive results? Maybe after first round Clomid? Its good to see the gi effects of the Metformin don't last long... I dont know how much longer I can stick it out! Good luck to you all!

I started on Metformin/gluc. in Jan. of the year. By April I had lost 30 pounds and became pregnant. However the seventh week of pregnancy I miscarried. I am noticing that seem to be a trend. Is it the PCOS causing the miscarriages or is it the Metmorphine? I am also taking phentermine. From what I have read both are considered to be safe. But are they safe?

Hi Joanne, my husband and i have been trying to get pregnant for 3 years and after 2 rounds of IVF the doctors found that i had a high insulin levels. As i understand it the high insulin levels cause a toxin to the baby resulting in a miscarriage. The doctors have also put me on Metformin to make sure i have a healthy insulin level to reduce the rick of miscarriage. They seem to believe i should be pregnant within 3 months. I hope all goes well for you and good luck Regards Sam

I was diagnosed with PCO back in April 2000, i did a lot of research into PCO because i was ALWAYS bleeding for months on end or spotting and PCO is more common to have irregular or no periods at all.... anyway the scan confirmed it, i as then put on mini pill to regulate bleeding, this didnt work, was then put on norithersterone and that didnt work, they tried tranexamic acid, nothing stopped the bleeding, then in march 2003 i had a mirena coil fitted, this stopped my bleeding for a whole year.. i then decided we would try for a baby so i had the coil removed in november 2004, and i started taking metformin 3 times a day in feburary this year. I found out this morning that i am 5.1/2 weeks pregnant!!!! So with me it was 4 years of mucking about with different drugs, but i was having unprotected sex for a year with my partner, but as soon as i took metformin i had 3 regular cycles, now i am expecting....i am not getting my hopes up though until i have gone 12 weeks and passed the safe period. I keep reading on here about miscarriage at 8 wks, so fingers crossed for me.... good luck to every one else trying to conceive xx

I did some research on the net about taking Metformin once you were pregnant (in all hopes that these meds are going to do it for me), and found out that continuing Metformin through the first trimester of pregnancy may help prevent m/c. They studied women on it for the first trimester and only 10% m/c'd as opposed to 73% who were not on it. These were women with pcos, and a history of m/c. Has anyone else found any information like this?

For Drew: I read stuff like this too however when i told my doc i was pregnant she told me to stop taking it. She said as i conceived whilst taking the metformin the egg would be stronger than with a natural conception ie no drugs. she said the chance of m/c would be the same as anyone else.... still with all the info on the net who can u trust...but is it reliable. I live in the UK and all the research seems to be available in the USA but not here. i am reluctant to start taking it again incase something happens

I have PCOS and was on METFORMIN for about 6months and fell pregnant quite quick as soon as my cycle was regular again. But when i found out i was pregnant at 6 weeks my doctor took me off metformin as in paperwork it says research is still being down and should would not allow me to continue on it while pregnant. i agrued with her and told her i read heaps on it and if i am not on it i am higher risk of miscarriage and if i stay on it the whole way i should be able to conceive a normal baby. but going over metformin then that means my levels are not right then and i think would be harm to baby as if i am not right then baby is not right. Anyway got to 12 weeks scan and i had a miscarriage. it was so horrible. went and seen my doctor yesterday after getting out of hospital and NOW SHE SAYS NEXT TIME SHE WILL KEEP MY ON METFORMIN THE WHOLE WAY THROUGH THE PREGNANCY so it doesn't interfer with my levels and then upset baby. so my advice is, if you fall pregnant while on metformin, tell your doctor that you are staying on it no matter what. cause if you come off it then you levels will not be correct and then can cause miscarrige to your baby. hope this helps people. just a shame i had to go through a miscarriage first people doctor said its a good idea if i stay on it now so levels stay normal all the way through pregnancy.

Hi Marie, everyone is different. I've heard some people say the first month worked for them, then I've heard many say it was the second cycle that worked. As for side effects, those vary between people too. I'm on 100mg Clomid cd 3-7, and 850mg Metformin twice a day. When I took the Clomid the only real side effect I noticed (and my family) was moodiness. As for the Metformin, I have noticed nausea and gassiness (not sure I spelled that right, but you know what I mean!) Any way, like I said everyone is different! Good luck!

I was told by my doctor today that I have PCOS. I have been trying for 3yrs now to get pregnant but have been unable to. I was put on metformin to try to get pregnant. I have always heard that with PCOS you dont have normal periods and that is why it is difficult to get pregnant but my cycle is pretty well normal. usually 26-30 day cycle. Will metformin help me. The doctor says if that doesnt work within a few cycles he wants to put me on a combo of metformin and clomid. If that is unsuccessful he wants to do a sperm count on my husband but he said we would wait on that because more than likely the infertility is due to my PCOS. Im keeping my fingers crossed that the metformin works for me. The doctor said he has had better results with the metformin than with fertility drugs in women with PCOS. Good luck to everyone!!!

I have been taking Metformin for almost 2 months. Some of the women had m/c the first pregnancy with met. But, They seem to carry to full term if they continue to take met throughout the pregnancy or at least throu the first trimester.

It was either the suppositories or HCG shots every 3 days. I didnt think I was comfortable enuff to give myself shots (altho they were only sub Q) so I opted for the suppositories. Answer:
Metformin will help you concieve as it straightens out your hormones somehow and allows your body to ovulate normally. I was diagnosed with PCOS about 3 weeks ago, started taking Metformin, and found out a week later that I was miraculously pregnant on my own. I was told by my doc to stop the Metformin since there are no conclusive studies about it's effect on the baby. Then last night I started spotting, and did more research. I wasn't told this, but women with PCOS have a 36 to 58% rist of miscarriage due to lack of progesterone to support the pregnancy. Studies done have shown that continuing Metformin during pregnancy reduces the risk of miscarriage to 5-11%, reduces risk of gestational diabetes, reduces pregnancy induced high blood pressure, excessive weight gain in the mother, and more normal birth weight for the baby (as compared to very big babies.) I went and had an ultrsound today and my baby is alive and kicking, but I decided to start the Metformin again. My OB told me that as long as I am aware that there may be risks (none that they are aware of, but they can't promise) I am able to make my own decision about whether I want to take it or not. I feel that I need to take this chance for my babies survival. Do your homework PLEASE! As I read all the responses from other women in our shoes, it was sad to read all the miscarriage stories. Hope I have a happy ending. Anyone who would like to chat about it can contact me at lavinialunaa@wmconnect.com.

Hi! Just started trying 2 mothes ago but we have not used protection in 3 years. Went to the doctor had blood test done and inslin was way low! So, I was put on metformin about 4 weeks ago! I have been sooooo sick! As a laid in bed one night still awake at 3am I thought I might be pregnant??? I was bloated and nauseated like I never have been before! I started my period 2 days later which was kind of a shock because that means I had a normal less than 40 day cycle! I have gotten sick 2 times and the headaches are horrible! I feel like all I do is eat so I can take this 3 times a day. My mother who is a nurse informed me I need to be taking the medication with lots of protein. (Takes longer to digest) The last few days have been much better! Try it and see if you feel better!

I think that I posted on another site tell my story Nora. I'm 5 1/2 weeks pregnant and my RE wants me to stay on 1000 mg of Metformin. I just had bloodwork drawn again on Monday and HCG was expected to be 1000, and it was 3000, and progesterone was 17.7(which is a liitle low, but still acceptable) I'm glad my RE kept me on the Metformin b/c I wanted to stay on it too b/c miscarriage rate w/o it in PCOS women is 35-40% and with the Metformin it's about 12%--that's a big difference to me. Hope this helps and I'd like to know what other responses you've gotten.

hello, I hope you don't mind if I join and get some answers. I was diagnosed in 2000 with PCOS. It was confirmed during a recent surgery to remove an ectopic pregnancy. Was put on glucophage while waiting to begin again. My doctor said it was prefectly safe to remain on this drug through 1st trimester. We have to wait until Dec 2005 to attempt this again but want to learn what is going on with this drug and share what info I have from asking many questions so far.

Hi Nora....I'm 6 and half weeks pregnant. Yes, I'm still on the Metformin. I went to the RE on Monday and got to see the baby and the tiny heartbeat(even hear it too) Today's technology is sooo amazing. I told the RE I was still taking 1000mg of Metformin---by law he can't recommend for me to take it while pregnant b/c it's a type B pregnancy drug....I told him since I've seen the heartbeat and the baby seems to be doing well I'd like to continue the 1000mg of Metformin at least thru the first trimester....he said he recommends professionally to come off to cover his butt, but he's personally very OKAY with the idea of me staying on it too. He said if miscarriage happens now it's probably not due to Metformin, it would more chromosomal defects. Sooo, are you still on the Metformin too? You were only taking 500 mg right? I hope all is well with the pregancy...do you have any pain? Maybe it's just an implantation hemmorage and the bleeding will be absorbed and stop. Let me know how you're doing

Is Fortamet the same thing as Metformin? Does anyone know? I was on Fortamet for 8 weeks because my doctor diagnosed me with PCOS but it made me nauseated for the entire time so I stopped taking it. He said it was to lessen the chances of miscarriage and diabetes during the pregnancy - both of which are common for PCOS sufferers - but he didn't say anything about it make it easier to become pregnant on it. I've recently decided to take a break from IUI so am not currently on any hormone drugs - and trying natural stuff instead. But now I'm wondering if I should give Fortamet another try. However, I have previously had a healthy pregnancy (after IUI) without diabetes or any problems at all. I'm not really sure I even believe I have PCOS. I have some facial hair but that's really my only possible symptom - that and my unexplained inability to get pregnant on my own.

(Generic equivalent of Bristol-Myers Squibb’s Glucophage® XR Tablets.) So far I am having a much better time handling the extended release version. I could not tolerate the regular metformin the first try. I had too many awful side effects. I think this extended release version came out last Spring. I have been taking the pills just after dinner. I've also really cut back on dairy, sugar and carbs. In the past my periods have been irregular & non-existent on my own. Hopefully metformin will help. WIll also be going on clomid. Baby dust to all and please post success stories!

Answer:
The Metformin will only help if you're underlying issue is insulin resistance. Did you ever have insulin levels drawn to determine if you're insulin resistant? Miscarriages typically happen in women with PCOS b/c the insulin resistance throughs some hormones out of whack----but let me assure you of this....I have a friend that's 3 months ahead of me and she has the PCOS and she's not on anything and she's doing fine----this is her third child too. I have mixed feelings on it--I'll go and get my 8.5 week sono next week and I'm sure the OB will tell me to stop taking the Metformin b/c this is my first pregnancy and I've never miscarried and blah, blah, blah.......so don't know what I'm going to do yet-----just know for sure lots of praying!

We all were shocked, dr my hubby and I. But that explains why i've been so sick throwing up. For the past week i've felt so sick and nauseas that all I do is puke. I told the dr that explains it, I didn't remember being this sick when I was pregnant for my daughter. I am now 7 weeks and I pray to god that he lets me have these babies. I've waited so long.

Four years ago I went on Metformin for PCOS and infertility. 1500mg. I was pregnant within 6 months. After some exhaustive research, I made the decision to stay on Metformin throughout my pregnancy. I took 1500 through my first trimester than lowered the dosage to 1000mg throughout. All this was done with the blessing of my infertility specialist. I had a great and very healthy pregnancy. I gained a reasonable amount of weight...30 pounds and no gestational diabetes which is a huge risk when y ou have PCOS. I also delivered a very healthy baby girl at the end of my term. She just turned three and I have yet to see any side effects to my taking Metformin through my pregnancy with her. My advice is too stay on it. and enjoy a healthier pregnancy. I would however ask your doctor about discontinuing use for breastfeeding as I have read that it can make its way into breast milk. I just recently went back on Metformin for baby number two. Fingers crossed.

I'm on 1000mg of Metformin daily which I'll continue thru the first trimester and then I might stay with the 1000 or drop it down to 500 mg thru rest of pregnancy....doctor said it will help with gestational diabetes and very large babies run in our families and the Metformin should help that the baby isn't insulin resistant as well. I didn't get a chance to ask about the breast feeding yet.....but alls good so far. Yes, Stef I DO remember you from the other posts....how are you doing? Are you still on the Metformin? I finally found a doctor willing to help me. I have PCOS and I had gone to 2 previous GYN's who told me to lose weight (and trust me-I have no end of willpower and still can't seem to lose weight). I saw this new doctor last Friday and he prescribed Metformin-take 500mg for 1 week, then up to 1000mg for a week and then up to 1500mg and stay there until I see him again in January. My question is did this help with insulin resistance enough that other women have lost weight? If so... very much? The side effects are worse than I anticipated, but I have a very sensitive stomach to begin with. I have learned so much already just by reading the threads on this site. Thanks so much for an help that you can give me.

Hi Kerri- I went to do another ultrasound yesterday because they wanted to see if I had a split uterus. I get the results on mon. when I go back to see my dr. I got to listen to two of the babies heartbeats and I started to tear up a little. They are so cute. They both measured up to be about 7 weeks and 3 days. And I guess because this is my second pregnancy I feel the twitching already, not all the time but sometimes. The nausea and vomiting is so bad, I can barely hold anything down. I've been TTC since Feb of this year, diagnosed with mild PCOS in Aug. Tried 2 cycles of Clomid with no ovulation. Dr prescribed Metformin (which I've been on for 3 mo - 1500mg/day). Tried 2 more cycles of Clomid (w/ met) and still no ovulation - follicles don't get large enough to contain a viable egg. I'm about 20 lbs over my ideal weight so I tried the South Beach Diet. I had heard that it's good for people with PCOS since it cuts out the bad carbs and can help regulate glucose/insulin. I only lasted 2 days on the diet but I lost 10 lbs and when I went for an u/s to check my follicles, they were the biggest they've ever been (it was only day 9) and everything looked great. I was on the diet for days 8 and 9 before I stopped. I went back for another u/s on day 12 and my follicles shrunk and kept shrinking through day 16. I don't know if that was all coincidence or if the diet actually influenced my follicle size that quickly. Has anybody else tried the South Beach Diet for PCOS/infertility or heard of it working for anyone? I'm going to try to go back on the diet to see if it actually helps but I'm lactose intolerant and I get sick from artificial sweetner so it's hard.

I am 24 and I was just diagnosed with PCOS a few days ago. The Dr. just started me on Metformin. I have been TTC for 7mos and have already had one miscarriage in July at 4 or 5 weeks. I am not overweight at all and I am in fact on the lower end of normal (5'4 110lbs). I also have none of the issues associated with the male horomones (excess hair..). However, I keep reading about how people who have PCOS are usually overweight. I feel so alone because I am not dealing with any of these weight issues (which I am grateful for) and that is what keeps coming up when I research PCOS on the internet. Anything I read about something to do to help myself is about diet and I already eat pretty healthy and do not need to lose weight. So what will help me? I was just wondering if there is any other people out there who are not overweight who have PCOS. If there are, and you are taking metformin, how has it affected you? Did it make you lose weight or did you stay the same. I do not need to lose any weight, so I was just wondering. My husband and I really want a baby and I am hoping that metformin will help regulate my period, which I was getting 4-6 times per year, and help me be able to get pregnant. Anyone else in a similar situation? Any tips for me on what to expect at the start of my journey of tryingto concieve with PCOS? I would really appreciate any responses. Thank you and best of luck to everyone else.

Brief History: Since I was 16 years old (now 32) I have always had abnormal periods (once a year). My husband and I have been married for 4 ½ years and we are trying to get pregnant. In August 05, I started taking clomed (150mg) and Provera (induce my periods every month) until November. My doctor informed me that I have PCOS even though I am not overweight. She suggested that I take Provera and Metformin to help me ovulate. I have been taking metformin (500mg) 2xs in the morning and 2xs at night since for a month totaling (2000mg). I have some side effects of nausea and just not feeling well, but other than that it’s ok for now. My doctor said that I can start taking clomed along with metformin in Feb. 06 and hopefully something will happen. The questions that I have: Has anyone gone thru the same type of thing that I just explained and has gotten pregnant? How long did this take you and is there any advice you can recommend? I have this fear that I still won’t get pregnant once I start taking both medications in February, but I’m praying for a miracle.

I have a question for Stef....are you still on metformin and how is your pregnancy going? We are going to be ttc next month and I am on metformin. Doc wants me on metformin for the 1st 12 weeks but I am nervous. It's a class C drug...not much info on what it could do to babies. What did your doctor say??

To: natalie herron, I've been trying to conceive for 2 years with no luck. I already have a 5 year old daughter but wanted another child so badly. I did some research for myself because my dr was no help. I kept having cysts on my ovaries and had them removed like 3 times. So after reading up on my condition I asked my dr. if he thought I had PCOS and he said yes, so I thought why wasn't he treating me for it. I asked him if he could and he said yes. He gave me metformin 500mg 2x a day, but I took it only once a day. And he also gave me clomid 150 mg from day 5-9. About 5 weeks after taking clomid I got my first positive results. I was surprised, didn't expect it to happen so quick. Monday I will be 4 months pregnant, which we found out at 7 weeks that I am expecting twins. My prayers goes out to you, just keep on trying. I feel like from trying so long this is such a blessing for my husband and I.

Hi y'all. My name is,Rachael. I was diagnosed with pcos when i was 16. I started my period in the fourth grade. A had it every month for a year. When I reached 5th grade they eventually stopped. I saw my normal family doctor and she told me it was very normal. A year passed and she again told me its very normal and alot of females start there period at a very early age and then stop and dont get it again til there 20s. I got another doctor. He set me up with a obgyn. He did a test BOMB you have pcos. I had all kinds of testing done and everything normal but my hormones i guess. I stopped seeing everyone for years cuz with my anxiety its to stressful. Well I after the fifth grade i had four periods. All which happpened for almost a week straight every time i left out of state. 3 times in texas and once in North carolina. I have been back in maine without leaving once for two years now and i havent gotten any. This year I am 22 years old. Still living in maine. Met a wonderful man and decided to move in with. That was at the end of April. My period lasted May til the middle of June. Every day for two months except 3 days i didnt in the middle. And we did not get prego. So in June it stopped. wondering if it would come back and it didnt. Well I finally had one more naturally this week. My doctor just put me on metformin. Been one it for a week. My period stopped 4 days ago. guess you have 14 days to ovulate after your period. I take one tablet of 500 mgs a day. then i will be taking 1000 a day. I so hope I get prego and it give me a period every month and ovulation. But i see with so many of these poeple on all these sites it only got them pregnant if they were taking it with clomid. I cant take clomid. DO I HAVE ANY HOPE?

Hey ladies...I'm 18.5 weeks pregnant with healthy baby girl and am taking 1000mg of Metformin, but on this dosage since week 2 of pregnancy. Don't give up ladies....it WILL happen---the reason I'm staying on it past the 12 weeks is to help prevent gestational diabetes and to help make sure that the baby doesn't get too big. Hi everyone. My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant since we got married in July 2004. I was told I had PCOS in June 2005 and after several horrible tests I was put on Metformin. I have been taking 3 a day for a couple of months now. Before taking Metformin my cycles were about 35-40days long. The gynea Dr. thinks that because I am having periods I am ovulating, however my eggs may not be healthy. My last period came on day 30 so I am in hope that Metformin is doing something! It is encouraging that soo many of you are getting pregnant. Congratulations. We live in hope for the rest of us. Take care all of you, Happy New Year and lots of Baby Dust! x

Hello, everyone. I have some questions. I have been diagnosed with POS 4 years ago. And just last year finally they run tests to see if for sure I have that syndrome. My specialist put me on metformin and I only took it for two weeks because of the side effects, I hate medicine, I was supposed to start the South beach diet along with it, but I never didi. I was also prescribed to take birth control pills to regulate my period, without the pills I never seei t. this year, I have new plans, and I think it;'s about time for me to have a baby. I would like with the help of my Lord to have a baby. I would like to know if , is it 100% that women on this syndrome can's have kids? do you think if I start again the metforming and the southbeach diet will that help me or should continue taking the pills along with that? I really gained so much weight, the last time I weighted myself was in september and I was 210 lb. Open to suggestions!!!!

Answer:
Paula, PCOS varies greatly between women. If you are not having periods you won't be ovulating so falling pregnant naturally will be very difficult and may take years. Metformin, so I was told, helps your body produce healthy eggs and give you more regular monthly cycles. You need to ovulate to become pregnant. I also was very nausious when I started the medication. Eating breakfast before taking the first tablet of the day helped. I don't want to sound like a boring nag but eating healthy and getting some excercise will also help develop a healthy body on the inside (I sound like my mum!!!). Good luck. x

I was diagnosed with pcos Nov 2004. We were trying to get pregnant since summer of 2003. My husband got checked and had a super low sperm count. We went to a fertility specialist who put me on Metformin in late Sept of 2005. I now am 7.5 weeks pg. I believe this has much to do with the Metformin and also, my husband's sperm count has greatly improved, it was 7mill last time he was tested in Oct 05. I was told to stay on Metformin for the first 12 weeks by my fertility dr. My regular dr. who I see tomorrow...the nurse told me to stay on it at least until my first appt which is later today. Hopefully they will also tell me to stay on it at least through the first 12 weeks because from what I have read, it can really reduce miscarriage and pregnancy complications for women with PCOS.

It sounds like Metformin has had some really positive results - no pun intended! (apart from the sickness, which goes after a few weeks). I just wondered if those of you who have got pregnant on Metformin had monthly cycles before being put on it. I was having cycles and ovulation kit results showed I was ovulting. I don't have the main effects of PCOS, I am not overweight and I am not excessively hairy. I'm just trying to work out the odds of me falling pregnant on Metformin. Good lucko to you all.

After trying to conceive for years, I diagnosed myself with PCO. My physician then put me on Metformin, which with the help of a high accuracy ovulation detects (the ~$200 kind), I became pregnant within 2 months. The metformin helped with ovulation, but without the ovulation detector, I would not have known that I randomly ovulated on the 29TH DAY of my cycle. I am now 5 weeks pregnant and hoping for a healthy pregnancy. Hang in there and best wishes!

I have recently started taking metformin, one of my family members has taken metformin for three years.....they have a 2 year old and a 8 month old. Years of clomid did nothing by itself they probably spent over 20,000 in infertility treatments and metformin and clomiphene together for her worked wonders!! She will be trying for one more in a couple of months and this one will be her last. I pray for my turn for success and I will for you as well....hope and faith will take you far!

Hi, you gals i'm so glad i finally found someone who i can relate to, well my story is pretty resent, i was also diagnosed with pcos in oct 05 and i didn't think much of it becouse i didn't want any children @ the moment neither DH(dear husband), any ways after being diagnosed i explained everything to DH, and he said we should start triying, i told the dr. and i got laparoscopy? is that the one they put a dye in your uterus and then take xrays?? because thats the one i got, to check if my tubes where clear from cyst, because i have 19 on my right and 23 on my left but all very small. so the dr. sai i'm good to go on metformin and clomid, so they prescribed, progesterone to induce my period and 4 days latter i got my period, it was 12/27/05 and started metformin and on days 3-7 take clomid, but METFRMN gave me a real bad acid reflux day and it was horrible trying to burt. anyways i only took it for 3 day and stopped my 500mg a day dose, and keep going with clomid alone so i did everything, and taking my BBT, i thought i had ovulated, but i whent to get my test to dr.s offc. and my level was low it's supposed to be 4.0 and i had 0.8 :-[[ my progesterone was low meaning i didn't ovulate. so i started last night on METFRMN, i took it at 10:30pm right B4 i whent to bed and it was WONDERFULL. and i think i'm oing to start clomid w/200mg i was taking 100mg a day. oh well thank you very much ladies, and finally i don't fell lonely, because when yu say pcos to someone theyr like whats that?? so know i feel good. any one of you gals feel free to email me remember we are on the same boat. and please give me hope ladies, for a baby i pray for me and for all of you gals that are on the same bot baby dust to all

hi, i've just come across this site and its great to get someone elses's perspective on things.i'm 31 and have pcos which was diagnosed when i was about 18. have never had regular periods apart from on the pill but have no other symptoms of pcos. i have an 8 year old who was conceived after having no periods for 10months but was a great surprise and the pregnancy went well. have been ttc for about six years now with various fertility treatments, clomid, ovarian drilling and injections. i stopped the treatment after getting an ovarian cyst and decided to leave it to nature, however out of the blue last year i suffered two early miscarriages. my doc has now put me on 1500 of metformin (which was not available when i initially started my fertility treatment four years ago). have only been taking for three weeks so we'll wait to see, from what i've heard it seems hopeful. i was told the reason for my miscarriages was probably due to hormone imbalance from pcos, my doc has told me to stop metformin if pregnancy occurs however after reading various articles about this, seems to be a higher chance of a successful pregnancy if metformin continued. goodluck to all. pregnancy can happen even with pcos-just don't give up but don't let it take over!

We also had him tested and we have to retest because something was wrong if the tests come back the same this time then he has to see a urologist. Anyways OB put me on metformin havent started it yet but now after reading all the SUCESS stories here I cant wait. I hope i get the same result. I have had type 1 diabetes for over a year now, and started on metformin about 6 weeks ago. Although it is a diabetes drug, my obgyn started me on it to stimulate ovulation. I had stopped taking the pill in July after my wedding, but only had 2 periods between then and January. The only thing is that it gave me awful headaches and nausea, so I have been inconsistent. I am really anxious to get pregnant and have already had a few false alarms. Does anyone know what other symptoms of pregnancy there are other than missing a period? My periods are still not quite regular, so I can not rely on that. Here's to hoping we all are successful soon!

Cheri. My side effects lasted about a month but I started on 500mg for a week then went to 1000mg for a week then 1500mg so you taking 1500mg straight away is alot and will be alot for your body to get used to. I found that having breakfast before taking the first tablet helped. Stick with it hun it does get better. As for doing a pregnancy test - I am under the impression that the earliest you can do one is the first day of your missed period. I hope you feel better soon Cheri. Take care everyone. x

We have been trying since we got married in July 2004. I was put on metformin in November. My periods we about 35 days long, my last 2 cycles have been 34 & 32. I am monitoring ovulation with the kits (ordering them on the internet is MUCH cheaper). Last month I showed to be ovulating on day 14, however I ovulated again on day 19 for 4 days. Its all a mystery! I think it takes a while for Metformin to regulate your cycles, I was also told that Metformin helps to produce healthy eggs. Are you ovulating? Its frustrating when you are late and know you are not pregnant because you are then waiting fo a period to be able to start a cycle again. And 'Yes' it is tiring...but fun!!! Love and luck to all x

Im not too sure when im ovulating but I here its 2 weeks after your period, I have read that when your ovulating you get a thick discharge and ive had that so well see, I try almost every day with my b/f but I need some time off too :) but its worth the work lol yeah its hard when u miss a period and have some signs of pregnancy then test and find out your not. But I hear it takes about 10-14 days too really know if your pregnant and whats crazy is that I had a friend that missed her period for 4 months and took a pregnancy 4x and they were negative with no symptoms 5 months she found out she was pg, so u never know. So has anyone found out about if its safe or safer to be on metformin while pregnant? oh yeah Alex do those ovulating kits really work? and is there just one tst you take everyday to find out if ovulating? ty good luck

Celine, I was told that two days after your period was due u should take a test, but I heared that there is a 10-14 day window meaning, say you are unproted (trying) u cant test right away because if u were ovulating the egg and sperm need to climb and it can take days so I would wait because u may be pregnant hope this made sense g luck

Yeah I would def wait, you never know but as for me I have tested neg but no period but im not sure if its just cuz my periods are usually irregular, there are so many things that confuse me, and also I read on the pregnancy test that if you have a cyst that it can mess with the pregnancy test (making it inacurrate) but I need to still find info. I hear from alot of people that with this medicine that when u least expect it it will happen, so for me I am always wondering maybe Im pregnant cuz this or that, sometime Ill feel nausea or even a craving and then ill run and test but then negative! so I am just going to slow down because it is stressful, but it will happen, for both of us so keep on trying girl and I hope the best for ya! oh yeah and since u already been pregnant b4 then thats good! sorry about your mis, but your chances are greater the next time u get pregnant to keep the baby! do u know why u miscarriaged?

in answer to Cheri (March 5) the ovulation kits are great to check you are ovulating - especially when your cycles are so irregular. I got a box of 50 for about 20pounds on the internet (they are 15pounds for 5 in the shops). They are really easy - dip them in a bit of wee and one line means no ovulation and two lines mean you are ovulation so you'd better 'get to it'! x x x

I have been on metaformins 14 months, and started clomids 6 months ago and have had to novarel shot( same as the profasi shots) and no pregancy yet, according to my DR. it can take up to 3 years, yeah like that is easy to wait I would say try a specialist, that is what i am am getign ready to do. YES, METAFORMINS are used in fertilty cause if your DHEA hormones are out of wack the metaformins will help with your hormones to regulate them therefore helping the ovaries to work better and so forth look it up>>>

Be patient I have heard alot of women get pregant on these meds but sometimes after a certain point it is time to just go furth into a specialist and skip the smaller DR.'s. It is alot of heart breaking feelings and time to just sit and trust in the meds and sometimes best to go to specialist many women after years of the meds and such wen tto a specialist and found out there tubes where blocked and IVF was their only option. Will get back with you all after my next appoint this month coming. Hi every one, hope you are all well. The last few postings all seem to be about ovulation and cycles. I was having cycles evey 35 - 45 days before being put on Metformin. I was told that the Metformin would help regulate a cycle so periods and ovulation will be regular. I must say that they have shortened my monthly cycle but I am still none the wiser at when I ovulate. Last month (using ovulation detector sticks) I ovulated on day 14 then again on day 19!!! Weird or what?!!! I am feeling a little disheartened about Metformin at the moment, I see the gynea again in May and am hoping she puts me on chlomid. A few of my hubby's freinds' wives have got pregnant on Chlomid fairly quickly. I don't know anyone around here that is on Metformin. My mums' freind has given me the name of a Dr. who runs a center which specialises in girls with PCOS. Maybe they will shed more light. Good luck everyone. I wish you well. x x x PS. hi my name is julia and i have psos. sory just trying to keep a sence of humor with all of this. i was just put on metformin about o months ago. i was having very strage periods. where some times i would go months at a time with out having one then i would have continuous periods for a month or so strait. i got realy worried after the second time my period continued for so long. i really didn't even know that i had a problem till my doctor told me i probably wasn't ovulating and i started crying in her office. i just thought i hadn't been trying at the right times. i mean we weren't realy trying to get pregnant just basically sayig if it happened it would be great. but after three years of not using protection and nothing happening and now learning that the whole time i was not ovulating i guess it got me realy upset. my dr. gave me progesterin to help me with my period the first month and ence then 40 days later i am now having anouther period with =out the help of projesterin so i guess the metformin is doing something. i'm going to a fertility specialist on the 5th to make sure there isn't anything else in my way as far as getting pregnant. i just stumble across this web site looking to make sure if i got pregnant ther would't be any side affects to taking metformin. i hope you all know how much seeing that i was not alone helped me so much. i started crying again. this time happy tears of hope. i hope it happens for me and all of you out there wanting to get pregnant too. if any one wants to keep in touch with each other i just found this great web site called myspace.com and it makes talking and sharing information easy. my name on there is pandorah7777. just in case you need some one to talk to. thanks again.

hey just found this on a web site. the web address is.... http://www.ovarian-cysts-pcos.-com/glucophage-metformin-pcos.html it- was what i was looking for when i stumbled across this web site and all of you wich i am so glad i did. i know there were a lot of questions in this regard so i thought i would post it. VITAMIN B12 MALABSORPTION. Of patients who take this drug, 10%-30% show evidence of reduced vitamin B12 absorption. A substance formed in the stomach called "intrinsic factor" combines with B12 so that it can be transferred into the blood. Metformin interferes with the ability of your cells to absorb this intrinsic factor-vitamin B12 complex.(12) Over the long term, vitamin B12 insufficiency is a significant health risk. B12 is essential to the proper growth and function of every cell in your body. It's required for synthesis of DNA and for many crucial biochemical functions. There is also a link between B12 insufficiency and cardiovascular disease. At least one study raises the concern that even if metformin is withdrawn, the vitamin B12 malabsorption may continue in some people.(13) The apparent cause is continued problems with availability of intrinsic factor, which is required for B12 absorption. ELEVATED HOMOCYSTEINE. People who take Glucophage tend to have higher homocysteine levels.(14) Women with PCOS also tend to have elevated homocysteine.(15) Homocysteine is an amino acid in the blood. A normal amount is OK. But an elevated level means that your metabolic processes are not working properly. Elevated homocysteine is associated with coronary artery disease, heart attack, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia,(16) cognitive impairment.(17), and cervical cancer. (18) Vitamin B12, along with vitamin B6 and folic acid (another B vitamin), is responsible for metabolizing homocysteine into less potentially harmful substances (19). Therefore, when metformin reduces absorption of vitamin B12, you lose one of the nutrients needed to reduce homocysteine and thus reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease. ELEVATED HOMOCYSTEINE & PREGNANCY COMPLICATIONS. Pre-eclampsia is a complication of pregnancy characterized by increasing blood pressure and edema. If left untreated, pre-ecampsia can lead to eclampsia, a serious condition that puts you and your baby at risk. In a study conducted at the Center for Perinatal Studies at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, a second trimester elevation of homocysteine was associated with a 3.2 fold increased risk of pre-eclampsia.(20) The Dept. of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Nijmegen, The Netherlands, reviewed a series of studies on the linkage between elevated homocysteine and early pregnancy loss. They concluded that high homocysteine levels are a risk factor for recurrent early pregnancy loss.(21) Ovarian follicular fluid contains detectable amounts of homocysteine along with B12, B6, and folic acid. The follicular fluid provides nourishment to the egg by facilitating transport of nutrients from blood plasma. High levels of homocysteine as well as an insufficiency of B vitamins may adversely influence the process of fertilization and early fetal development.(22) NOTE: We are suggesting that elevated homocysteine, not metformin itself, could contribute to pregnancy complications in some women. However, metformin does contribute to increased homocysteine levels. PREGNANCY WARNING. Many women use metformin in their pursuit of a successful pregnancy. However, Glucophage is a category B drug, meaning its safety for use while pregnant has not been established. It is found in breast milk so it's not advisable to breast feed while taking Glucophage.

Hi all! I'm Debb, 27, married, ttc w/ pcos. I was diagnosed with pcos about 7 years ago and have yet to ever get pregnant. In the past I did only one round of clomid, however, it didn't work. I tried telling myself, it will happen in God's timing for years. My husband and I have prayed and prayed to have a baby. Now my feeling has changed. I believe God gives us all a brain, so I have to use it. God has given these Dr's and scientist the intelligence to make these drugs to increase our chances of pregnancy, so rely on them. :) It seems like for a long time now the only time I ever even have my period is when I take provera to induce it. Well, this time I took provera to induce it again and I'm on CD3. I started taking Metformin last night. 500mg 1x a day for the first week, 500mg 2x a day 2nd week, 3x for the 3rd week. I'm also taking ovulex, haven't heard as many success stories on it as I have on metformin, but it does supposed to help you ovulate longer, so we'll see. I guess I'm going to buy an ovulation prediction kit to help me know when I ovulate. My question is, does it help that my husband and I have a very healthy sex life? Meaning we engage in adult behavior (HA!HA!) every day (sometimes more than once a day) or at least every other day? Will this help to increase our chances of making sure we have sex at the right time during ovulation? I feel so lost and helpless with all this..... I've also started charting btw. Well, I hope it's ok that I join the chat. Good luck and God Bless to everyone!

Hello everyone. I'm so glad I found this website. I first got my period when I was 13, it was terrible. I then went a year with out it and then it was terrible. I continued this yearly cycle till I was 16 and my mother feared I was following in her foot steps of PCOS & endometrosis. I was put on birthcontrol until I was 18 and this helped greatly I always got a monthly cycle and it wasn't that heavy or painful. After I stoped the birth control I got one cycle right away and then never again so I went to my gyno and he insisted I needed the birthcontrol, he never tested me for PCOS. So I went to a endocynologist who ran blood work and confirmed I had PCOS and put me on metformin. I started metformin June of 2005, I had a cycle right away and then not till Nov 2005 then in Feb 2006 (only one day) and then April 2006 for two weeks, during which I went in for lyposcopy to see if I had endometriosis (having extreme pains in left ovary area). Its been confirmed I have both enlarged ovaries and insuline resistance (PCOS) & dirfuse endometriosis. My endo wanted to put me into a false menophase to stop the endo growth but I refused and insisted I would try for pregnancy. We have been trying since April 15 and recently I have been getting headaches, dizzy, nausea, and sensistive to smells. I have wondered if I could be pg but I thought it would be harder. I haven't taken a pg test for the fear of finding out it is neg. I also don't know when I should take on for I don't know if my period will be normal or not this month. Any suggestion would be great.

hi, just letting you know to trust and follow your doctor. I was put on metformin October of 05 after ectopic surgery. There is also nothing wrong with my insulin levels and it is to aide in ovulation. I am PCOS so do not ovulate on my own without metformin. I am alos missing a right fallopian tube since my surgery. I have taken clomid (bad side effects for me) with nothing. I did some injections and nothing. We took a break from infertility world and decided we would focus on us. My dh decided we need to BD for 3 weeks beginning after AF left. We did...every week we BD 5 out of 7 days and I am happy to say I am 4 weeks and 2 days pregnant. Take metformin if your stomach can handle it (some cannot). I have been on it for 7 months tomorrow. As for clomid, I had HUGE mood swings on it. It was bad, so bad I dislike myself. So, be careful taking it and if you notice anything funny, ask about femera.

Hi girlies. Hope youre all ok and keeping positive, I know it is really hard. I was at a BBQ last night with every one talking about my best mate being pg. Its hard I know but stay positive. Nothing happened to me on Metformin apart from my cycle shortening from 44days to 32 days. I am on Metformin and Chlomid now and feel sure something will happen. The doctors have said they are booking me in for IUI in 6 months and IVF in 12. They are really getting the ball rolling their end. If you feel the doctors aren't giving you what you want then ask for it. It is your right to be on what you feel is right. I don't think Metformin is any use but that is my opinion. Stick with it and enjoy trying!!! lots of love to you all. x

Answer:
Take the metformin. This actually can help regulate ovulation and increase egg quaility with us PCOSers. I say take the metformin, watch your diet (lower the carbs) before trying clomid. And make sure you are taking your prenatals, you need all the vitamins you can get while on this medication, as it changes the way the body metabolizes food.

Congratulations KeiraYvette! I am so happy for you. I have had 2 miscarriages in the past 2 years and I have just been put on Metformin. I have regular periods but i have had some weight gain. My blood work shows that some of my hormone levels (testosterone and estrogen) are a bit high. The doctor is not 100% sure that I have PCOS but he is treating me for it incase I do. He wants me to be on the meds for 30 days at full strength before we try to conceive again. The was very upsetting because we wanted to try again this month. I started seeing the fertility doctor in May and miscarried in Jan, on my husbands bday, so it feels like forever since all this begain. Does anyone have any insight on how well this med works and if you have heard about someone having to wait for 30 days? I am going to wait, just because I want to make sure I do everything right, but I am really tired of all the hold ups. Have a great day and yall are all in my thought. Good luck to everyone!

Thanks for the response Gbaby. I am on the Metformin and you can bet your last dollar I will be up to full strength by this weekend. I am already up to 1 pill in the am and 2 in the pm. I feel fine except for a little bit of diarrhea. I have not felt nausea at all. I am going to make sure that by the time I ovulate again I will have been on this medicine for 30 at full strength so my doctor should give me the go ahead. He mentioned being put on clomind but i have never had a problem getting pregnant, I have only had a problem staying pregnant. I seem to miscarry around the 8th week or so. With my first miscarriage I had a D&C which I would recommend to everyone. With the 2nd miscarriage, my obgyn wanted me to miscarry naturally. I think he must hate women because that was awful. I sat on the toliet for nearly 7 hours straight not to mention I started the miscarriage in front of my kindergarten class that I teach. Thank God I have a bathroom in my classroom and a teacher next door that knew what was going on and was there to help me. I am not sure whether to go on clomid or not because I have never had trouble ovulating or getting pregnant. I am actually hoping that metaformin will be enough and when I get pregnant again, I will ask to be kept on this and put on progesterone. I have no idea if I am right or not by thinking this so please give me your thoughts. Thanks for comments. Amy

Well, I was on metformin for one year trying to get pregnant and I lost my left ovary somewhere in that time.. .So now I am trying to get pregnant with one ovary and they put me back on metformin about 2 months ago. Well now I am taking 850mg twice a day and I am sick all the time. I vomit whenever it feels like it wants me to and my diarrhea is horrible...I can't even hold it! So I took myself off over the weekend because I have every side effect under the sun and I need to call my doctor about that...BUT she is on maternity leave...go figure. Has anyone else had these side effects?

Answer:
Amy-for some reason i didn't get side affects with Metformin. I was on 2000 a day, right away. I just started again today cuz i want to get preg. again. my daughter is 6 months. we'll see if i get any side effect this time. keep ya posted. your lucky u can get pregnant, are ur periods regular? i think the metformin should keep ur pregnany. i miscarried the first time too, (no D & C...which was the worst experience. i still think it was more painful than childbirth without an epidural). the 2nd time (preg.) i was on metformin for 4 months before the preg. through week 14 of the preg. and had an uneventful pregnancy. i have done a lot of resaech on it and i think this will definitly help bring u full term. (keep me posted) i would just do it naturally (and not go on clomid) if u can get pregnant on ur own. i would request ur progestrone levels be checked at 10 days after ovulation and and a couple times after. the metformin made my progestrone levels high so i didnt need suppositories the 2nd pregnancy(full term one). but too much progestrone won't hurt, i just think u should still have the levels checked. now that i see ur prob. is keeping the preganacy i agree u should be on the metformin at least 30 days before concieving and at least throught the first trimester. the last thing u want is another miscarriage. it just sets u back farther and u want to see if the metformin is ur answer.

Amy- i just read ur first post. u do have regular periods and the fact that your testosterone and estrogen levels were high and high weight gain means maybe it is PCOS and the metformin is ur answer to keep ur preg. i hope it works for u this time. My PCOS doesnt have weight gain but i do have higher hormone levels and no periods....like 2 a year. the metformin gave me periods. but i was to eager to get preg. so i didnt wait around to see if the metformin was enough i did clomid right away. about 2 months after i was on metformin.

Answer:
Hey GBaby-I am glad to hear from you. Yes I had my ovaries checked. I have had 2 ultrasounds since I started going to the fertility dr. The first time the saw fibroids but they were not in implanted in the uterus. Funny thing is, as I type this I wonder....where are those suckers if they are not in my uterus. Anyway, they checked my uterus to see if it was a smooth surface great for implantation and it was perfect. They saw a cyst on my left ovary and put me on BC for 1 month. They did the 2nd ultrasound last week to check to see if the cyst was gone adn it was and in doing the test I had some thoughts I wanted to ask the nurse. I mentioned to her that my dr thought I might have PCOS and she was kinda surprised because she only saw like 5 follicules in my ovaries. I guess that meant 5 on each side. I did not have the 12 or more which she said was how most are with PCOS. But then she said, that is why the do more than 1 test to determine these things. I started taking the metformin and a diet pill to help me lose some weight and I have lost 10 pounds this week. Where was this stuff when I was wanting to look good for swim suit season. I do live in the south so the beach is an all the time thing for us. I do have regular periods and I took an ovulation test today (day 13) and it says I am ovulating or I guess I will be tomorrow. I never completely understand those test. Exactly when do I try...on 2 dark lines, 2 sorta dark lines, 3 zig zag lines, or when they call my winning lottery numbers! LOL! I just tell my husband, come on hunny, it's that time again. He doesn't complain. LOL! Before I went to the fertility dr, my regular obgyn was going to put me on progesterone when I got pregnant again so I think I will ask to be kept on the metformin and also put on progesterone also. I don't think it hurts to have too much, does it? My other thought is, what do I take after I have a baby to control the PCOS. I would hate to have problems later in life because I it was not under control. Do you have any ideas on all my questions. Tell me about yourself. I see your daughter is 6 months and you are ready to get pregnant again. YOU ARE BRAVE! Thing is, I think I will have to be that same wasy because I am no young cookie. I am 38 and Joe is 40. We never thought this would be a problem for us. We got married 3 years ago (June12) and this was both of our first marriage and neither of us had children. We thought how sweet it was that we both had waited but now we are thinking...is this ever going to happen for us. Tell me your story. Amy

Hang in there, maybe the doctor will have some insight for you...after she puts her baby down for a nap. LOL. How bad does that stink to think she is out with a baby and that is all we are trying for. Life sometimes just doesn't seem fair. But who are we to say anything, she may have had trouble too. Amy- I live in the south too....around San Diego, where i grew up. Where are you? I never had the weight problem, thank the lord, i just have the period problem and fertility problem. WANNABABY- i have diarhhea in the beginning and never really hungry(i think thats where the weight lose comes in), but if you keep on it, it gets better and the side effects are gone. Its worth it if you want a baby. back to Amy....i have the 12 or more little pearl like cyct around my ovaries. they say its normal to have cyst and it doent automatically mean its PCOS. so doing the hormone check is important. have u had ur FSH levels checked around day 3 of ur cycle? if they are elevated that means higher chance of imbalance hormones and miscarriage. Also high FSH could mean PCOS. i have high levels around day 3, so that is why the metformin probably prevented the miscarriage w/ my daughter. Insulin is related to the FSH and other reproductive hormones. Must b nice to ovulate on ur own. U MUST FEEL LIKE A REAL WOMAN!! i NEVER do, or at least i dont think i do. I am only 27 and yeah, i love being in motherhood and want all my kids back to back. My husband and i are think 3. Good idea to stay on progestrone and metformin. too much doesnt hurt. Also try baby asprin during the first trimester. Thats what my fertility doc does with me. and also NO STRESS!! lol. to be honest i dont really think about the PCOS except to have kids. I guess i dont care if i dont have periods later:) but if weight or hair growth or all that other stuff from it is a problem than i think a good diet, excersice and keeping the insulin resistance in check are all good ways to control it. my hubby and i have been together since highschool and we were always on birth control. 7 years or so. sometimes i think that all this fertiitly problems was because of that. all those hormones for so many years had to mess up the natural period. but docs say that there is no evidence of that. but for some reason i think it has something to do with it cuz no one in either of our families have any problems. everyone has had or is having babies left and right. go figure:) Sarah

HEy Gbaby- oh how I would love to go to San Diego. The Zoo and Sea World there is one place I just have to get to one day. I live in Mobile, Alabama. I am in hurricane central...LOL. We were affected by Katrina but thank God it was not too bad here. My inlaws live in Gulfport, MS and had damage there. The house we lived in when we were in Gulfport had the a good bit of the roof ripped off. We thank God we had moved but to Mobile the Jan. before the storm. My husband is an Engineer and has to traveled to San Diego in the past. I told him if he is sent there again I would love to go also. Who know's, maybe I will make it there someday soon. We have been trying since 05 to have a baby. I am not about my FSH. What does that stand for. I have had test run on certain days of my period but I am not sure what all they have run. I go to the doctor and they take more and more blood each time. My guess is they must have checked that but I cannot be sure. I am thankful that I have found such a thorough doctor. He seems to check everything. WOW, what life would be like to be 27 again. You can atleast rest easy knowing you have plenty of time to conceive. Not that that makes you feel any better. Being 38 really has that clock ticking LOUDLY in my head. We want 2 children and if my mom and mother in law would have their way, we would have twins. I used to think that would be horrible but now, with all this going on, I am thinking I could handle that. NOT THAT I AM WISHING FOR THAT. LOL. I teach kindergarten so I guess they think I can handle dang near anything. I used to teach in the inner city schools but now I am at the school that my nephews attend. That is a much better place. Inner city schools have taught my a lottttt of patience. I most say, I loved all my students and any of them could come home and live with me. I actually go pick some of my old students up and take them to the mall or walmart with me or to the park. They call me often and know that I will do anything for them. I had one call the other day and asked me when they could come back to my house for the day. LOL! I know, I am not the typical teacher but I guess God has given me the gift of love for these kids. I used to tell people the best BC was to teach kindergarten. Now, I think kindergarten is the best place to realize you want a house full. Being that we are not 20, a house full is not going to happen but we are atleast hoping for our 2 little angels. I too was on BC for 10 years and I ovulate on my own so I am not sure if BC may have cause your problems or not. Everyone is dfiferent. We can only hope and pray that we will have all our dreams come true. Keep in touch. Amy

However, it seems like the most anyone is on that I have seen is 1500mg and reduce down to 1000mg after first trimester. Hopeinmempis- You are thinking just like me. I was wondering that same thing about should I stay on this after I have a baby or what are the dr's plans for me. I talked to a friend that was taking Metformin and she asked her regular OBGYN abou that. He sent her to an Endocrin. Dr. He told her that she needed to lose weight. Which, as you know is very hard with PCOS. She ended up having a Gastro Bypass surgery. I would love to lose weight but I am not sure I want to go THAT route. I guess that is something I will cross when I get there. But...my dr did tell me that many people stay on MEt until after their 1st trim. while others stay on it the whole time. After 2 miscarriage, I will be telling him to keep me on it the whole time. I do not want to take any chances. I may even ask for progesterone too. He did not say he would reduce my amount either. We are planning to try again in July so I guess I will know more then. Good luck to you. Amy

Hey Wannababy, I am so glad to hear for you. I thought everyone out there had left me. LOL. Hang in there girl, we will get our baby, even if it drives us crazy and our husbands crazy too. I have conceived twice and knowing that I can conceive is a good thought but going through a miscarriage was horrible. I have friends that have baby's that were pregnant when I was and I think somedays, wow, I should have a about to be 2 this month and delivering the 2nd one next month. But, for some unknown reason, God has a bigger and I hope better plan for us. So, in just knowing that you can conceive is not always a pleasant thought. Hang in there, keep the faith and known that I will always check this post if you ever want to vent. I will always listen. Are you trying now? Joe, my DH, and I will begin trying thiis month. AF should be here next week and then we will try. That is, if the dr says we can. He just started me on Metformin and he wants me to be on that for 30 days. My ovulation time should be on 32 days after starting the medicine. He may actually ask us to wait 1 more month. I thought I would be terribly upset about that but since starting the medicine about 2 weeks ago, I have lost 15 pounds. How amazing is that? WHOO HOO! I am not sure how long the wait loss will continue but I want to be as heathly as I can. Time will tell what God has in store for us and for yall too. Oh that would be great wannababy, I hope so too. I, on the other hand, want AF to wait for atleast a week maybe 5 days. Joe is headed out of town next Tuesday for 10 days, so if I start too early he will miss my ovulation time and I will have to wait another month. That is not going to be good, but if I have to find something positive about it, I will have another month to loss some weight. That can't be all bad. I guess I will just have to leave it all in God's hands.--------------KWall - I am on Metformin and I have not started bleeding or anything. That sounds weird. Have you called the Doctor? My husband wakes me up before he leaves for work and gives me my meds and then I go back to sleep. I try to also take them a little before bed at night. Hey Amy(hope), oh I can see this is going to be connfusing. LOL! Should we now call this the Amy Board. CALLING ALL AMY'S! Anyway, yes I take two 50 mg's in morning and then at night. I am not sure what my doctor will want me to do but if I have my way I will stay on it at this level. I have had 2 miscarriages and do not every want to go through that again! EVER! He did tell me that some stay on it for the 1st Trimester and others stay on it until about 36 weeks. I, myself, want to take it as long as he will let me. I go back to see him in about a 1 1/2 weeks. I will find out more then. I have lost about 13 pounds in a little under 3 weeks. That has been a plus. I might would have lost more but I have eating over my Weight Wathcers points a few times because of some dinners out. I am back on track now. So tell me about yourself.

I am 33 and my DH and are are desperately trying to have a baby. After all this time, I was just diagnosed with PCOS. I have been begging my regular OB/GYN to diagnose me as PCOS, but she said she wasn't sure. I do have the typical symptoms of no period at all ever and overweight carrying alot in the midsection. I guess b/c I didn't have a few of the other symptoms like acne and facial hair, it wasn't 1005 to her. Whatever. I started 177mg Metformin 10 days ago and have lost 6 pounds. I am going to ask my RE when I go back t up my dose to 2000mg from 1700mg. Did your Metformin induce a period on its own or did you need Provera to induce one as well. We are simply waiting for my cycle to come and then going to use Clomid plus IUI. My husband has a low sperm count as well. I am feeling anxious to get this show on the road. I am thinking positive as much as possible and trying to use this extra time to get my body in the best shape possible.

I heard you calling all Amy/AImee's! I couldn't resist a reply! How are you today? I am ready for the weekend, that is for sure. Amyell - I am so jealous...I gained weight on clomid...averaging 8lbs a month! I quit smoking at that time, so I am sure that accounted for some. I am so sorry for your mc's. Does the clomid make you feel a little edgey(sp?)? I felt like I had very little patients and my mood swings were pretty significant....hopeinmemphis, warn your husband...lol! My DH has a zero sperm count, (we found out after 5 months of progesterone and clomid) so currently we are trying to figure out why and see if it is fixable. I am not a patient person, and the waiting and time consuming aspects of fertility treatment drives me crazy! :) Good luck to all of you and have great weekend!!

Hey Aimee, I am not on clomid and never have been. I am on metformin and that is what has helped me to lose weight. It is to control my insulin. Hopefully be taking this it will balance my hormones. My testosterone was high. I have now lost 15 pounds in 3 weeks but I am also doing weight watchers. It has actually been pretty easy and I must admit it has never been easy before. I think it is really this medicine that is doing it for me. You want me to send ya some...LOL! I am sorry to hear about yall's little swimmers. Oh gosh, your DH would probably kill me if he heard "little". LOL. What are they going to do about that. I have an inspiring story. I have a friend that had 5 m/c's and went for test after test and even had some surgery. After all that, they realized it was a chromosome issue. Guess who's chromosome? You got it, her DH's. They did the egg retrieval, got 20 eggs, did invitro and every single embryo would have been a retarded child. She was beside herself. They decided to use a sperm donor and do insemination. They ordered the sperm and would you know that when they came in, it was not the right amount. They ordered only enough for invitro. She had to pick out another donor and go through the whole process again. Finally, after all that, she had the insemination and 9 months later a beautiful little girl named Madison was born. So....with all that said, everyone keep the faith. Our Madison will come one day soon. My friend never gave up and none of us will either. Baby dust to everyone. Amy

Hey Amy (hopeinmemphis)! How are you? My period were already regular before the metformin. I am about tohave my first period since being on the medicine so I am kinda anxiety to see if it will change things. I hope it does not make my periods late. I will scream if that happens. I have always started anywher from 24 to 29 days. Never longer than that. Today makes CD27 and it is Sunday. If I do not start today or tomorrow I will have to call the doctor. There is no way I am pregnant, we have prevented that from happening this month. The doctor did not want me to try to get pregnant until I have been on the meds from atleast 30 days. So, I ws careful to not mess up. I will have to keep you posted. I have read on some of these boards that it has helped others to get regular and I have a friend that it helped her as well. As a matter of fact, she was my room mother this past year. I teach Kindergarten. I will have to ask her if she was taking anything else when the metformin helped her. I do know she was on clomid at some time or another but clomid alone did not regulate her. That is when she started the metformin but I am not sure if she was taking both met and clomind at that time. I will call her and find out for you. Baby dust to everyone! Amy

Well, i totally feel left out! I've been gone for a few weeks and it took me so long to read everything. To catch people up on me.....i have pcos, never have my own periods, but not overwieght. about 125, 5'5. i do not ovulate on my own. got pregnant once with clomid and IUI. miscarried. went on metformin, got preg. again with clomid and iui. Had an uneventful pregnancy and have a 7 month old. was on 2000mg a day for 4 months, concieved, stayed on 2000 a day until week 14, than stopped all together. my baby is healthy and perfect:) just stopped breast feeding 3 weeks ago and the doc said it will take about 2 months to get ur period (for normal people). i went on metforin 2000 a day 3 weeks ago when i stopped BF, and i got my period 3 days ago. i usually bleed one day, when i got it on my own, which was once or twice a year, and this period is like bleeding! i am on day three and still so heavy. So looks like this med is working again. we arent going to do iui and clomid again, cuz we're only 27 and not so anxious this time. so naturally will be our choice. we'll see if the metformin is all we need:) i always take my metformin at the same time. 1000mg at 9am and 1000mg at 9 pm. i set my phone alarm:) hopeinmemphis....i never really got periods and metformin gave them to me when i was on it before. and it looks like that is what is happening again. aimeemd.....clomid made me crazy too:) Hi Amy.....!!! i missed ya! are you preggy yet???

Gbaby- are you kidding me. I have not even tried, but I will be working on that this coming up weekend. My DH is out of town right now. I better not be BDing while he is gone. LOL! I started clomid this cycle CD3-7. I am taking metformin 1000mg a day but I do not take it at the same time. Should I? I wake up at all kinds of times since I am not working. I need to get on a schedule. I think I will do the phone alarm too. That seems like a good idea. How are you and where have you been?

We were in Vancouver for vacation. And just been really busy. Why did u go on clomid? i thought you ovulated on ur own?do u do 1000 twice a day (met)? i think it is important to take it at the same time everyday. it works better that way. that's what the doc and research says. u are doing the deed this weekend? r u getting ultrasounds on ur ovaries while on clomid to see when they release??

I have been taking metformin for about 2 weeks to help shorten my cycles and bring on consistent ovulation. I will also start clomid as soon as my next cycle starts (I am currently on provera to bring on AF). Hopefully this will do the trick. Because my cycles are so long, we have been having much trouble with timing, as well as the fact that sometimes I do not ovulate. Good luck to all!

Has anyone heard of d-chiro-inositol, the new discovery to treat PCOS without the side effects of Metformin. It causes ovulation and is more natural than a serious drug like Metformin. It regulates insulin for weight too. Maybe something for long term treatment since none of us want to be on Metfromin forever. Has anyone heard anything??

Hey Sarah, I have not heard of that med. I need to check it out though. Let me know what you find out about it. Also, I have not used that monitor either. I ovulate on my own but with my FSH count 12.8 I think my doctor is doing the clomid and trigger tomake sure I do not go without ovulating at all. I think he thinks I am getting old! LOL! No seriously, I amjust doing as I am told. I am not doing the IUI. WE are doing the SEX SEX SEX thing. As a matter of fact, we are trying this weekend. (and tonight) I go tomorrow for ultraound on follies and trigger shot. I will keep you posted. Where are you in your cycle of events?

Hey there Amy, My FSH is around 13. I got the monitor to see if i am ovulating at all. I'll let you know how i like it. We are trying:) But no rush. We are going to try it with just Metformin and nothing else this time. I am on my 7 day of my cycle now and I'll check for ovulation with the CUE II this month. I think the Metformin is working for me because i had a normal 6 day period instead of just one day (like i use to). I've been on Metformin for a month now. I am so excited for you and your big weekend. Let me know as soon as you know! talk soon--S

Hi Girls~ I have been reading all day on your metformin battles. I was on Met for 3 months the first time with alful bathroom problems, I did loose some weight. After 3 mo I was preg my fertility dr said stay on for 6 weeks this was in 2001. Had a wonderful baby boy in May 2002. We now want to get kpreg again. Now I am 33 years old and don't have to many years. Just saw my FE yesterday and he said should not have a problem, but he will probably use the met that I am on 1500 a day, I have been on this for about 3 yrs. I have pcos, along with the clomid. I did not need these two together the first time, but the sucess rate seems to be great the two together.... For those of you that have the bathroom blues, hang in there they do go away.......

Hi everyone, I have had female problems all my life cirvical displasia, at 16, then i stared getting cysts on my overies i went for Dr to Dr they would put me on bc and then take me of and the cysts would come back its was like they didn't care what was casing this problem. I have a miscarage in 2002 and another in 2004. Finally i found a Dr with some heart that found out what was wrong and diagnosed with pcos on sept 2006 . Doc started me on metformin in mid nov. and i became pregnant in Dec i was so excited, But the same thing happend I lost the baby in Feb.2007 I have been on bc ever since the Doc wants to try metformin and clomid and progestrone once I get prenant but I am scared with all the things that can posibly happen and the side affects. My husband and I want a child but i don't want to lose another child. I found a site called www.insulitelabs.com it says that it is a cure for pcos not just a way for you to become pregnant has anyone else heard of this ? Wish all of you the best on conception.

I have great news! I went for an ultrasound today and everything looked great. I am 8 weeks and 1 day when measuring from my LMP but the ultrasound measured 8 weeks and 5 days so that is even better. That means this baby is growing like a weed...or a bean! LOL. I was so happy and even more relieved to see that heartbeat today. It was 175 bpm. THANK YOU GOD! I go back in 4 weeks unless I can come up with some crazy excuse to go in 2 weeks just for mental sanity. My doctor said to come back if I need to and make up some story that is convincable to get in for an ultrasound. God I love him. He knows what I have been through so I think he is going to be very good to me. Just wanted to shall my news. Keep me posted on you and your appointments. I can't wait to hear all about it. My due date is still April 15.
