HCG Injections
Question:
Has anyone recently had an HCG injection? Just wanted to know if you had any side effects. I have lots of bloating and feeling a little crampy. Have to wait until 1/31 to test. Am also on prog. supplements. Anyone have any luck with a bfp after the injection?

Hi Carole. I took the HCG on Sat and IUI on Sun and Mon. I will start progesterone suppositories on Wed night - then 2/day. I test for progest levels on Mon 23rd then pg on the 30th. This is the same routine as I had last time - I got pg the 1st round. When did you inseminate?

Answer:
einfanti, thanks for sharing. I did not get inseminated. I have really long cycles so we never know when I ovulate. I also had a m/c in August. So this month we have been monitoring the dominant follicle, watching cm and doing opks. On sunday I got a + on my opk and the cm was ew and a lot of it. I went to see him for an u/s and my follicle measured 23.5. He was very pleased and gave me the injection on the spot. DH and I bd Sun, Mon and Tues. I hope that we hit the mark. Dh has been tested before and he got me pregnant in July so it is not him. I just hope the swimmers were hanging out when the egg popped. I am taking prog. supp as a precaution. My progesterone was low with my m/c. My fertility problem is a very subtle hormone imbalance. So hence the trigger shot and progesterone. Obviously I had enough estrogen to grow my own follicle, just really late in my cycle. So we can both hope we hit the mark. So you already have a child? My daughter is 4. Took us 2 years to get her. I didn't even have a period when we started back then, so my body has come a long way. I hope we can keep in touch, I would love to hear about your bfp!!

Hi Carole, it's einfanti, jsut changes my usename. My partner and I have an 18 month old daughter. She was easy - happened on the 1st insemination. But this time has been longer - since Oct. Not nearly as awful as some of the stories I've heard - they are so sad, but these ladies are so strong and courageous, even when they feel their weakest. That's a lot of BD - I'm sure you hit the mark - those suckers last for days! Especially with EWCM. I start the prog tonight (YUCK!) I hate it so much - have to wear a liner all the time (TMI?). Are you taking prog orally? I wish my doc would let me do that. My BFP is a loooooooong way off - I will certainly cheat by the 27th.

Elyse... Gosh isn't 18 months fun? I miss those days. 4 is great too, all the conversation and some things they come up with crack me up. I have been on this site since Aug. when I found out I was miscarrying. I post on the m/c section under "Going for Sept/Oct babies" They are a great group of girls but many of them don't have infertility problems so I thought I would check this side out. I have such an addiciton to testing. Aren't you worried if you test early, you will get a false positive? How long before the HCG is out of your system from the shot? My dr. told me to take the pills vaginally. I have never been on them but I hear they are messy. He said if you take them orally then side effects are really bad. Why do you have to inseminate? I really hope that we get a bfp but I am not going to set myself up to be sad. Even though all the important things are in place, it doesn't mean it will work, but hey, positive thoughts!!!!!!

Answer:
YES - positive thoughts for BFP's for all. We inseminate b/c I am with a woman. So neither of us has the "equipment". Last time we tried in Oct, I hpt'd on 13dp IUI. It was negative. I am afraid of a false negative, but all the ladies here test on 10dp IUI and still get negatives, so it seems like the HCG is out of the system. My Dr says it stays for 14 days or more, but I think he REALLY doesn't want me to do hpt for obvious reasons. I don't think I will be able to help myself though. Did you start the prog already?

Elyse... Hey, I have been out of town for work. In training, ugh...!!! But I just got home and my daughter missed me so much. Such a good feeling! That is awesome for you and your partner. So did you pick out your donor and everything? My friend and her girlfriend have been talking about the same thing. Are you guys happy with the process? I so hope for a bfp for you. I was told also that the hcg stays in your system for 14 days. He told me not to test until day 15. That seems so long. I know I will breakdown, though. Where you live? I am in Virginia. I started the progesterone this morning, made sure I had a liner. :) Are there any side effects from it that you have noticed?

Answer:
Hey Carole. No side effects from the prog, except for disghusting wet feeling - ya know. And no side effects from the HCG. The only side effects I had were from the Repronex (injectables) - I gained about 5 lbs after taking it for 6 days and I feel VERY emotional and "soggy". My partner and I used the same donor we used for our duaghter. It is an amzing feeling to come home to her - I know what you mean. I'm a stay at home mom, but when we go to dinner or the theater or whenever we leave her with a sitter, I long to come home and hear her squeal with excitement. We live in NJ - about 30 minutes outside NYC. As for the process, we are SOOOOO happy, but I think it's b/c of the doctors we have. It's a fertility clinic with 3 Dr's and they are ALL wonderful. If your friend wants to talk about it, please let me know and I will give her (and you) my email or phone #. It is the most wonderful thing in the world to have a baby - and I can't waot to do it again. The 30th seems so far away! We will certainly cheat on the 27th (I think). How about you?

Hi Carole and Elyse...I just wanted to tell you that my RE told me to test at 13 days post IUI even though I did have an HCG injection. In fact, they would have done a blood test 2 days earlier, but we were out of town that week. I tested positive that morning, and when I called to tell my nurse, she said that the HCG injection should be out of my system by that point and that I was most likely pregnant. She was right - my pregnancy was confirmed by a blood test the following week. I think it depends on which injection you have...I had Ovidrel, and I read somewhere that it is supposed to be out of your system within 6 or 7 days. Good luck to both of you!!

I got to hear the heart for the first time today, it's amazing..good luck to you :) As far as testing I think I tested at day 10 and got a + I swore it was the hcg injection but I keep doing a test each day and when they were still + after 1 week I made an appt.

J and JND - thanks for the info. It makes me so happy that I can test earlier than I thought. I can't even waith. This means I will cheat by next Wed instead of waiting til Fri - Yippee!!! Do you remember where it said that the HCG would be out of your system in 6 or 7 days? I have always heard 14, but I think the docs and the articles just don't want us to get our hopes up and test early and get a false positive. Maybe it also depends on how much HCG - I took a 10K shot.

Hi Elyse...I'm sorry but I don't remember where I read that Ovidrel is out of your system earlier than other HCG injections. It was back in August when I first tested positive and I was doing a little research then. Do you know which brand of HCG injection you had? My Ovidrel injection was 250 mcg, so I don't know if yours would have been the same. If you don't know, then I would say go ahead and test a day or two early, but realize that it could still be the HCG shot if it is positive. Hopefully you will be pregnant, though!!

J, JND and Elyse::: Thanks so much for the info. I probably will break down a couple of days before he told me to test but I certainly wont call until the day he said to. I did not take any ovulation drugs this time around. I had my own follicle that grew by itself, I just ovulate really late in my cycle. This time it was cd25. I have been on clomid in the past and that didnt do anything for me. I think it hurt me. I also had injections and iui done back in 2001. If we aren't successful this month, he is going to put me on Femera for a month and see how that works for me. I got my hcg injection last Sunday , my follicle measured 23.5. I was impressed, that is the largest one I have ever seen with me. He said I should ovulate the following day. We bd last Sun, Mon, and Tues. I hope that those swimmers made it. Have any of you guys used preseed before? Congratulations on your pregnancies! I hope Elyse and I can join you in the celebration.

Answer:
Carole, I never used preseed, but I did take Arimidex during my IUI cycle. I think it is very similar to Femara. My RE uses Arimidex now instead of Clomid because it exits the body sooner. He said that some research has shown that sometimes Clomid can impede pregnancy because it stays in your body for so long. Anyway, I took 5mg of Armidex on cd 4, then did 100IU of Follistim injections on days 6-11, had the Ovidrel HCG shot on day 12, and IUI on day 13. I got pregnant on the first try. I did produce two eggs that cycle, but only 1 was fertilized. I'm now 25 weeks, and we're having a girl. I hope you have very good news soon!

Carole, I think your swimmers made it and NICE FOLLICLE! I had2 that were definitely ready - 24.5 and 18 and one that was 16, so I'm not sure what it did in the 2 days bt the u/s and the IUI - Dr assured me it would continue to grow, so...I'm feeling good, though. Some of my bloating went away and I seem to have lost a few of the 5 or 6 lbs I gained with the shots. Weird cravings though for the last few days - maby psychosomatic?

Hey Ladies!! 7dpo today, Ok here is my stupid question for the day. Will the HCG from the injection fade first before new HCG is being produced from an embryo. What i mean is, can I take a test, it be negative but in another couple of days be positive! Is that possible? You know why, because I know i am going break down and test!!! :) This next week is going to kill me. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:
Carole - 8dpo for Lene and me today. I am no expert, but I haven't heard of a false negative yet, only a false positive, so not sure if the HCG can fade enough for a neg and then be found the next day by the hpt. Lene and I are breaking down and testing on Fri morning. I tried to get her to cheat with me for Thursday, but she convinced me to wait til Fri. Wanna join? I think by Fri, you should be fine. you will be 11 dpo and usually it will show by then. I forgot - are you on progesterone suppositories too?

Answer:
Elyse, Thanks for your input. You know I am just stretching this a bit, right. I so much want a +, I am trying to think of anything that may happen that I couldn't get a positive!!! I guess I will just have to keep praying and hoping that we have some implantation going on as we speak. I don't think I can hang with you on Friday. I was going to wait until 13dpo which would be Sunday for me. And you know I might not do it then either. Both times I have gotten pregnant, I have taken a test 2 weeks out from ovulation and it didn't show +. With my daughter I was pregnant and went thru insemination not knowing I was pregnant already. BECAUSE the stupid test said -. I was already 7 weeks before we figured it out. I went in for a blood test at 2 weeks past IUI and my HCG #'s were like 50,000+. They didn't know what to make of it. They were shocked that my RE couldn't tell I was pregnant b/f they inseminated. I even had an ultrasound you know so they can monitor the follicles and everything but I was in that right about 3 weeks gestation and it couldn't be seen on the ultrasound. So there is my wacky story and why I don't trust hpts. AT least with me that is. Yes I am on the prog. suppositories. I have never used them before. I won't get af being on them will I. I will have to stop using them before it comes on, right? How many days does it take to come? I hope you have a great day!

I never heard that you can't get AF if you are on progesterone, but it makes sense. However, I got AF last time while I was on them. I took them starting 2 dp IUI and 2 weeks later was still on them the day b/f I was supposed to test, but AF came HARD! - That little witch doesn't care about science, she will come whether you are on the progesterone or not! Aren't the suppositories gross???

Good Morning Elyse ! I have 1 child. She just turned 4 last week. I got pregnant in July after being on clomid for 2 months. I had a miscarriage on Aug. 25th. I was 6 1/2 weeks. It was very sad and took all the innocence away from getting pregnant. Never again will I not be naive to what can happen nor will I not be scared to death at every moment. I just pray that I get pregnant and then take it one step at a time. I forgot to do my prog. supp. this morning. Can I do 2 of them tonight, is that bad. Yes, they are totally gross but i figure if it is worth it, I can do it. How are you feeling today? Any symptoms? Are you dying to test yet?

I am hoping anyone can shed some insight for me. I have suffered 2 losses, one in 3/05 and the other 6/05 and have been through a great deal of testing etc...had surgery for a polyp that my RE found and was then told I have a mild case of PCOS. Now I have been taking metformin and did IUI this month with clomid and had an hcg injection. I am taking vaginal suppositories along with the metformin and baby aspirin. I took the injection 14 days ago today and b/c I am neurotic, I have been taking hpt's since Saturday which would've been 10 days post hcg injection and would be getting very very faint lines - which I assumed is from the shot still being in my system. now this morning I took a test and have had it come out darker and most everything I have read says to wait 14 days from injection to test, but my RE said to test this Friday so I dont want to call them, they will assume it is too early. Just wondering if anyone else has been through this-can I hope for a pg this month or just have too much of the hcg in my system? also, does the suppositories cause cramping like you would be getting your period??? thanks so anyone out there!!!

I think you have implantation cramping. Call your re when you miss af and are still getting +'s then they will send you for blood and urine work for confirmation. Good luck!!

I pray this takes this month, last night I was feeling down b/c I was sure it didnt work this month, I dont really have any pg symptoms so that is why I dont feel hopeful and dont want to get my hopes up. I want to call the RE but am afraid they will think I am a crazy lady who tests WAY TOO MUCH!!! My dh gets so annoyed that I test too early and get so worked up about it, it is a GREAT feeling to know I am not the only one. I have cramping like I said and am wondering if in addition that the progesterone has something to do with it? how far along are you? I know, I compare too...lol...today it is darker, before you would have to squint and stare to see it. today it is clearer, still light though

Answer:
Hi KerriLynn74. The HCG trigger just causes your follies to release the eggs. But as sperm can live inside your body for 5 to 7 days it's possible that since the sperm will be waiting for the eggs you could get PG from BD last night. Usually however you don't actually ovulate til 36 hrs after the shot. But again sperm can live inside for several days. Does this answer your question? HTH!

I am new to this web site. I find it so comforting to hear your stories and know that I am not alone. I am 40 years old - ancient in fertility years. I had a ruptured ectopic 11/2 years ago and then had two miscarriages since. This is my first IVF month. They were only able to successfully transfer one embryo. I had the HcG shot 16 days ago and am supposed to have blood test this Friday. I cheated and took a hpt today. There was a very, very, very faint positive line. I don't know what to think of this. I really don't have any pregnancy symptoms and know how bummed out I'll be if I have to go through another IVF cycle again. The times I got pregnant and miscarried, the line was very very faint too. I guess I'm confused. It is such an emotional rollercoaster.

Hi again. Thanks for sharing. I went to the dr.'s yesterday and they gave me blood hcg test. I came back positive but nurse said my number was 45 and to be cautiously optimistic since they like to see a number at least over 50. Having had the three miscarriages in a row, I am now more nervous than ever. It seems I must constantly be keeping my guard up. I can't celebrate and be happy because there is this dark cloud looming above. I get another blood test on Monday. They want to see my numbers double by then. Anyone else have numbers low to start with that turned out okay?

Hi - I'm new to this whole infertility gig and this is my first attempt at chatting online so please be patient with me. My story is pretty brief so far, I have been on 50mg of Clomid for the last 2 months, and did my first HCG shot 8 days ago. Here's my question, I've felt a bit crampy ( expected it) but have had a case of cha-cha-cha's ( sorry trying to be polite) for the last 2 days. It didn't dawn on me that this could be a side effect of the HCG, until I read about it online. I honestly thought I caught a case of the nasty flu bug flying around, but the cha-cha-cha's are my only symptom. That and I've had periodic experiences with IBS, this is definitly different. I'm traveling for work and not near my Dr. I'm calling my Dr. first thing tomorrow AM. Should I be really concerned?! Can someone please ease my mind?

Hello Everyone: I am new here as well and I guess my question as kind of been answered. I also too Ovidrel 10,000 on Jan 21, today would be day 14 and I took my first HPT and there was a faint line. Do you think it could be a real positive or do you think it is still the Ovidrel in my system. The Dr. did call yesterday to say that my progesterone was a little on the lower side so to increase my progesterone supp. That made me wonder if I really could be pregnant. Any feedback would be really appreciated. Thanks again. and baby dust to you all.

Hi, Wak, well after 14 days I think that it should be out of your system for sure. Do you have any other symptoms? I'd call you ob and go get a blood test. Good luck! Keep me posted.

I had hcg shot 5000, and now exactly 4 and a half days later the line on pregnancy test is really faint so I agree with it takes 1 day for each 1000 to get out of your system

Omgd the hcg has worked wonders for me... I got my BFP 11dpo 1st time on the clomid & Hcg 5000. It actually ended up taking quite a few days to get the tail end of the shot out of my system... I think it was day 8 or 9 before we got complete negative....
