Q&A | Problems getting pregnant? | Femara for pregnancy

Welcome, guest
Name: Kate Title of Question: Femara for pregnancy
Question: I have pcos and want to be pregnant. I've taken both clomid and metaformin, and neither of those helped. My doctor has suggested taking femara. Has anyone else ever taken femara to try to get pregnant?

Answer: I also have PCOS. I took Femara and it did absolutely nothing for me. It did not stimulate my ovaries enough to produce adequate sized eggs. But do know that everyone is different and it my help you. I also take metformin. My doctor is going to try me on Clomid for my next cycle.

Answer: I have recently been diagnosed with PCOS and my doctor wants to put me on femara. I am actually trying to get info about it myself. Any help/advice would be great.

Answer: After 7 failed cycles of clomid (including one with IUI) -- my fertility doctor put me on Femara (also with IUI) and I conceived the very first month. I have PCOS - but I am not overweight. My doctor says Femara works better than Clomid for people who are PCOS without the weight problem. It also left me with a much thicker uterine lining than clomid ever did. My little "Femara" baby is now 11 months old -- a happy and healty little girl. Let me know if I can answer any more of your questions...

Name: Jolie | Date: April 26, 2005, 16:27
Answer: I have been on Metformin 1500 mg (due to increased insulin levels, PCOS, no weight insues) now for three months with no shortening of my cycles and no pregnancy. I saw my RE today and he has recommended a x-ray to evaluate the patency of my fallopian tubes, a sperm count for my hubby (we had one done last year but apparently this one is more detailed???), I will start on Proinetrium two days after I ovulate (due to a short luteal phase) and if I get my period on May 10 I will begin therapy with Femara. My RE will not put me on Clomid as I am already high risk for a twin pregnancy I naturally conceived my twins in April 2004. But I lost my two beautiful twin baby girls at 24 weeks due to PROM. They both survived for several days but in the end they went to be together in Heaven. Hubby and I have been trying since January 2002. I am also looking for information on Fermara. Best wishes to everyone and I would also like to hear any advise and outcomes.

Name: Shelly | Date: May 11, 2005, 14:40
Answer: MY DH and I have been ttc for almost 2 years now - there is now "scientific" reason why we shouldn't be able to conceive. In november my Dr. put me on Femara - "just to make sure I was ovulating" eventhough the bloodwork reflected that I was ovulating. I got pregnant on the second cycle with Femara and unfortunately ended up miscarrying at 9 weeks - not fun. My body is back to normal again and I'm back on Femara - just finished the last pill on Monday - so my fingers are crossed hoping for a pregnancy - most of all a healthy and successful one! There is not a lot of info. on the internet re: femara - since it's normally prescribed to treat breast cancer. I do know that it doesn't carry the same side effects as clomid and there is a smaller chance of multiple pregnancies - it also help to enrich the lining of the uterus, thus assisting implantation. All the best.

Name: Rachel | Date: May 11, 2005, 16:25
Answer: This is my first IUI. I took Femara days 3-7, my u/s on day 10 showed 3 follies Left 17.1 and Right 17.3, 16.4. I had the Ovidrel (trigger shot) on Day 12 after I got my + LH surge. We did the IUI on Sunday. I hope this works.

Name: Sara | Date: May 11, 2005, 21:51
Answer: I have just started taking it and it seems to be going fine. This is my second month becuase the first month I did not ovulate. Hopefully this month I will.

Name: Colleen | Date: May 12, 2005, 14:06
Answer: After 11 rounds of Clomid and only O'ing 3 of those, we moved to Femara last month. 1st month I O'd wonderfully and we've just started 2nd month. I too hava PCOS. It also does not have the horrible side effects that Clomid does....

Name: AJ | Date: May 15, 2005, 10:20
Answer: I was on clomid for 8 months, ovulated 3 times conceived once but miscarried at 6 weeks. I'm on my 2nd cycle of femara as I didn't ovulate in my 1st cycle. I experience some side effects in the 1st cycle with femara (i.e. that pins & needles feeling...in my face). This time around I was completely fine. Now hubby and I are just playing the waiting game. Good luck.

Name: Lorean | Date: May 15, 2005, 22:15
Answer: I have PCOS and spent 3 months on Clomid with no response and terrible side effects. Then a failed in vitro due to overhyperstimulation. RE changed me to 2 2.5 Femara and I got pregant first time. My "Femara"baby is now 10 months old-it is a miracle drug!!

Name: Dee | Date: May 19, 2005, 9:53
Answer: I took femara last month and I did not get pregnant and I am about to start on my second dosage...What are the possibilities of getting pregnant and some success stories with others who have taken this drug?

Name: Jen | Date: May 19, 2005, 15:36
Answer: I have been on clomid for six months. My most recent cycle I was at 150mg plus 500mg metformin (it was supposed to be 1500mg, but the side effects were so severe that the doctor reduced it to 500mg). Just had my ultrasound and no decent-sized follicles, so the doc wants to try Femara or Tamoxifen. Has anyone tried Tamoxifen or does anyone know what the difference is between Femara and Tamoxifen?

Name: Amy | Date: May 20, 2005, 17:54
Answer: After taking clomid for months and not ever developing mature follicles (i have pcos), my new doc put me on femara and we ended up having to cancel the cycle the first round because of TOO MANY mature follicles (11)......I was also receiving follistim injections....the next cycle we'll cut back on the injections..good luck

Name: Melody | Date: June 8, 2005, 13:39
Answer: I am on my second month of femara. As soon as I become pregnant I'll let you know. I have high hopes and reading all of these stories similar to mine is helpful and nice to know I'm not alone. Because going through these fertility problems definitely makes you seem alone. I'll be back soon with good new.

Answer: I just finished my first cycle of Femara, I had folicles on my u/s although they were all under 8 - not sure what all that means. I go for another u/s and lab work in a couple days I hope it is good news. We have been ttc for 3 years. Any info on this would be great. Good luck to all.

Answer: Hello all! I have been ttc for 4 years and am thinking of calling my ObGyn Monday and seeing about getting on Femara. We are experiencing unexplained fertility right now. I just don't know much about these drugs. What are the side effects of taking Femara or Clomid? I won't end up with 6 babies would I? Do they cause weight gain or bad mood swings? How about cysts? Thx!

Answer: I was just prescribed Femara today. I have been on clomid for 8 mths did IUI and got pregnant but miscarried at 6 wks. I hope the Femara works. Does anyone know the side effect of Femara?

Name: Amanda | Date: August 19, 2005, 11:45
Answer: Hey all, I was so glad to find this site. I also was told I had pcos and am not overweight. I was on Clomid for 3 cycles and never produced follicles that matured, then my OBGYN sent me to an infertility doctor. He put me on femara (2.5) right off and blood work showed that I ovulated. I just finished my 3rd round and should have started yesterday. I took a pregnancy test this morning and negative. I haven't had any side effects, and thus far I seem to be ovulating without any additional drugs. Is there anyone who was/is on femara alone and conceived after 3 cycles or more?

Name: Ashley | Date: August 21, 2005, 0:08
Answer: You all give me hope. I have pcos as well with no weight issues but have tried three clomid trials, hysterosalpingogram, ovarian drilling, and hysteroscopy. I've been taking metformin for 2 months and tomorrow I take my first Femara. Wish us luck! Good luck to you all!

Name: Dianne | Date: August 22, 2005, 20:21
Answer: Hi everyone. I'm really glad I found this site. I am on my first cycle of Femara after 3 cycles of Clomid and 2 cycles of injections with no luck. The side effects of Clomid were awful, but so far so good with Femara. I am also taking Metformin. Can anyone tell me why weight is a factor when you're on these drugs???? It seems that lots of people on this site are commenting that they have PCOS with no weight problem???? Just wondering why this matters? Thanks.

Name: Amanda | Date: August 23, 2005, 12:31
Answer: Dianne, I'm not sure why/if there is a correlation between weight gain and infertility drugs, however I do know(from researching PCOS through the internet and questioning doctors) that weight gain or inability to loose weight is one of many symptoms of PCOS, something to do with an inbalance between glucose and insulin, I'm not a doctor but this is just what I've found out. I hope it helps in answering your question.

Name: Dianne | Date: August 24, 2005, 20:45

Answer: It worked great for me. I got pregnant my 2nd cycle taking Femara. I have a history of miscarrages but the good news is I'm now 24 weeks and doctor says everything looks perfect. I swear by this drug and highly recommend it to anyone who has infertility issues.

Name: Shelly | Date: August 29, 2005, 16:58
Answer: What does PCOS stand for

Name: Dana | Date: August 30, 2005, 9:10
Answer: I've heard some good things about it and was happy to hear it helps with the uterine lining. I too am just starting with Femara after doing 8 rounds of clomid over the past year - only one pregnancy, but m/c at 7 weeks. Surprisingly, before starting the meds, the ultrasound showed 8 follies in one ovary and 7 in the other... (I was off all meds for 3 months - only fertility blend herbs) They plan to do an IUI next week after seeing how I responded to the Femara. Now I'm wondering if the combination is too much stimulation since I already have so many follicles!?! Anyone know about the stats on multiples with Femara? Good luck and prayers to all!

Name: Amanda | Date: August 30, 2005, 15:19
Answer: PCOS stands for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. If you search the web for pcos you will find a lot of helpful information. I'm not sure with the chances of multiple births are with femara, my doctor told me that it was less than what it is with clomid. I would like to find out if anyone has had multiple births with femara? and what their dosage was?

Name: Shelly | Date: August 30, 2005, 18:56
Answer: I was diangosed w/PCOS prior to finding out I had endometreosis? Are the two related? My doctor just recommended Femara because I had terrible side effects w/clomid. I took a break after the clomid, b/c you know . .. you get so tired of it all. My husband and I have been trying for 4 years. Finding this message board has really answered some questions for me. Thanks ladies.

Name: Laura | Date: August 31, 2005, 15:41
Answer: I am so excited to have found all your postings today! I just found out I have PCOS, also no weight problems, after 17 months ttc. Answer: I never heard about it .I have been trying to get pregnant for 1 year and six months without success. I went to the fertility specialist, but their prices were just too high for me ($3,000 per month, no guarantees). I decided to do some research and took the following herbs: 1. FEM RESTORE (herbs in liquid form. Dark brown bottle with green letters. Found in any good health food store). Nasty taste, but worth the suffering. 2. Crystal Start Female Harmony: 4 pills per day. 3. Deluxe Evening Primrose Oil: 4 pills per day. I took these herbs for about 1 1/2 months. I started with the beginning of my period and took until the next periods (irregular periods). Then I took VITEX just for a few weeks and now I am 2 months pregnant! I just saw my baby’s heartbeat yesterday. Please write me to anaclaudiariofl@msn.com if you have any questions. I wish you the best of luck. Put a little of God on this mix too and you will have a winning bet. Regards, Ana Claudia.

Name: Christy | Date: September 2, 2005, 23:19
Answer: Good luck Sabrina! When do you go to the doctor for an ultrasound? I go on Tuesday. The last 2 times I have had 3 follicles.

Name: Sabrina | Date: September 3, 2005, 14:00
Answer: Thanks Christy. They have not done an u/s to check for follicles. I'm still seeing my ob/gyn. I did have an ultrasound to check for other stuff and I seem perfectly fine. We've been ttc for 2 1/2 years with no luck. Has anyone not ovulat. with Clomid but Femara worked well?

Name: christy | Date: September 4, 2005, 0:25
Answer: Sabrina, I have never personally taken Clomid but I have read other womens statements on these boards that say they were not successful ovulating on Clomid but were on Femara. I hope this works for you. I have also been ttc for 2and1/2 years. ***baby dust to you***

Name: hanna | Date: September 7, 2005, 19:48

Answer: This was my first month on Femara and I just got my AF today. I am disappointed as it sounded so promising. I would love to hear from anyone who had success with Femara on the 2nd or 3rd try! Good luck to those trying!

Name: Jodi | Date: September 16, 2005, 18:47
Answer: I am new here. I am 37, almost 38 and was diagnosed with pcos in 2003 and was told by RE that he was going to have a hard time getting me pg, unknowingly I was already pg! Yeah! I have 23 month old daughter. I had one other natural pg in April, which ended in an early mc. My ob started me on metformin in April and I have not ovulated on it. I just finished my first round of Clomid with no ovulation. They said my estrogen droppedd from 92 on cd10 to 67 on cd13, and that I wouldn't and didn't ovulate. I just learned my RE wants to try injectables after only 1 month on 100mg clomid. I am a little freaked about moving so fast to injectables and would like to try femara. It sounds like there has been a lot of success with it. Has anyone taken femara with metformin? And is it possible to ovulate and not get a positive result with the OPKs? There are a few days I get a lighter line than the test line then it goes away. Does this mean anything? AND... does anyone know about the estrogen levels and how they work in your cycle? Sorry for all the questions, but it sounds like so many of you are better educated than even some Dr's out there. Thanks and good luck to all

Name: Dianne | Date: September 16, 2005, 20:18
Answer: Hi Jodi, I'll try to answer some of your questions. I just finished my first cyle of Femara with Metformin. Previous to that I did 3 cycles of Clomid with HCG injection - although I ovulated each cycle I did not get pregnant. My RE then put me on the injectables (Puregon) which I did for 2 cycles with HCG Injection and IUI - again with no success. Last month was the first cycle with Femara and Metformin, with HCG injection and IUI - and again, no luck! My understanding of Femara and Metformin is that they are used in women with low Estrogen levels. I'm not sure why your RE is jumping to injectables after only 1 cycle of Clomid. Usually they try a few cycles with increasing dosages. Clomid and Femara are basically the same, except Femara seems to have less side effects. I had really bad headaches and was extremely moody with Clomid but feel pretty good with Femara. If you're not sure about doing injectables, talk to your RE about at least trying Femara. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Answer: Sabrina, I have been TTC for 8 years. I had a miscarriage 8 years ago. I have taken numerous rounds of Clomid up to 250 mg days 3-7. It never worked. I just finished my 1st round of Femara/ IUI. I ovulated, had 4 good follicles. It did not work, but I am getting ready for Month # 2 on Femara. FYI.. I have a friend that is similar to me, she does not ovulate on Clomid. She has a 2 week old Baby Girl from her 2nd Femara/IUI cycle! I wish us all luck !

Name: Sabrina | Date: September 18, 2005, 15:53
Answer: Thank you Kim. That gives me some hope. I am waiting for by blood test results. Good Luck!

Answer: I am taking Femara today. My doctor said I will only take it one day. Then will have IUI. I have never taken anything, been ttc for almost 2 years. I already have a 4 yr old and had no problems ttc.

Answer: Thanks for the info Diane, I appreciate it. There is so much conflicting info out there it is hard to know what to think. Kim, Did you not ovulate on clomid, is that what you said about it not working for you? Did you ovulate on Femara?? How much were you taking and were you on metformin also? Do you have pcos? Sorry for the millions of ??, but I have been dealing with this by myself for the last year and 1/2. Thanks for being so helpful and friendly everyone.

Answer: I read a neat book "the infertility cure" by Randine Lewis, She practices eastern medicine and is also a western Dr. She said some amazing things about acupuncture, pcos and general infertility. It got my hopes up, I have my 1st session with acupuncturist tomorrow. I am 38 have pcos, 1 child naturally trying for #2. Has anyone looked into acupunture or tried it?

Name: CB | Date: September 25, 2005, 11:13
Answer: My friend is over 35 an was told that she would have to do IVF in order to become pregnant. She could not afford it and was given 1 cycle of Femara. She did not even have an IUI. Just the Femara, and now is expecting a baby.

Name: Sabrina | Date: September 25, 2005, 20:26
Answer: I took numerous rounds of (Clomid 50-150) as well as femara and did not ovulate on either. Has anyone else not ovulated on Clomid and Femara? Did you eventually have any luck? Thanks!

Answer: Sabrina have you tried it alond with metformin? I have heard that sometimes helps the clomid or femara work. A good question to ask your RE. Goodluck

Answer: Hi ladies, I was just prescribed femara today . I will start taking it tomorrow. I have not been diagnosed with pcos, nut my re said he preferred it over clomid b/c it had much less side effects. DH and I have been ttc 1rst for 15 months, have had hsg, and lap done two weeks ago . I really hope this works for us. Anyone have any side effects??

Name: Yvonne | Date: October 2, 2005, 16:19
Answer: Hi, I am taking Femara right now along with injectibles of Repronex. I have had an excellent response, meaning I have had several follicles. I am not pregnant yet and I'm on my 4th cycle, but the follicle response has been good.

Name: Jenny | Date: October 4, 2005, 17:45
Answer: I have unexplained infertility and have been ttc for 2 yrs 3 mo. I took several rounds of Clomid and did ovulate on it, but felt terrible side effects (moodiness, hot flashes, fatigue). I have now been on Femara for 4 cycles. I have ovulated 2 follicles on each of these cycles. The side effects of Femara have been very minimal. I had my 4th IUI last week and have had some spotting this week...I don't think it is implantation bleeding because I am only 4 and 5 days past ovulation. So, kind of strange. But, overall, femara (while so far has not resulted in pregnancy), has worked well in creating mature follicles and has given me few side effects.

Name: Karris | Date: October 4, 2005, 22:09
Answer: I have PCOS and have been TTC for nearly 2 years. After a year of failed attempts with the Clomid, I have started Femara. I am taking it for 5 days (today being day 3) and have a US scheduled for Monday to see if it is working. I have been following all of your postings, and am very hopeful that this med will work.

Name: Kristy | Date: October 5, 2005, 22:49
Answer: I also have pcos. I take 1000mg glucophage and last month started femara. It did work and I became pregnant first time. Sadly though I had an early mc at around 5 weeks. They said it could have been a chemical pregnancy because my beta hcg never went above 48. That was my 3rd mc. I do have a healthy 4 yr old son who I conceived naturally (miracle). This was my 2nd cycle on femara and us today showed I'm ovulating now! Hopefully I'll have good news in 2 weeks!! Also I tried clomid 100mg for 6 months and didn't ovulate with it so don't give up! I heard femara does not increase your risk of multiples like clomid does.

Name: Jessica | Date: October 5, 2005, 22:57
Answer: I was diagnosed with PCOS about 5 years ago & had laparoscopy 3 weeks ago & found out I have endometriosis as well. I have been on Metformin for almost 9 months & have resumed "regular" periods, although unsure if I am ovulating (over the counter tests have shown negative). My doctor wants me to start Femara, but I am hopeful after having the laparoscope & getting much scar tissue removed that I will have sucess getting pregnant with Metformin alone. Anyone have any success stories with just Metformin?

Name: Carroll | Date: October 7, 2005, 1:35
Answer: I to took clomid with metforin for six cycles. The largest follicles I got was a 12mm. I also have pcos. Me and th have been trying for about 10yrs naturally, but about 2years off and on with with meds.We real serious about 10months ago so i did from 100 all the way up to 250mg of clomid(12mm)follicle. My og/gyn refered me to a fertility specialist. On Sept6 I saw the doc welayed out a plan. I took Provera to get a cycle and on the first day of full flow call office. I never got a full flow strange provera always works for me.Soon day 5 I had blood work done estrogenl evel 39.07and progestrone0.375. So doc calls with the ok to start femara 3 2.5mg aday at bedtime for eight days. I finshed the last dose last night.I go for ultrasound on Sunday at 10:15 if good i'll get a shot of ovidrel to make me ovulate.Have anyone had anything happen close to this? So keep me in your prayers, for I will be doing the same!!

Name: Kristy | Date: October 9, 2005, 18:55
Answer: Carroll, don't give up. I conceived my 4 year old son after I was told at 18 that I would not get pregnant without fertility treatments. We never used any protection and we did want children just not when I was 18. At 21 I got pregnant on my own! I took clomid for 6 cycles with nothing. Now I'm on my 2nd cycle of femara. It has worked both times making me ovulate. I'm on the 2 week wait now. You hear good responses from people on clomid and when it doesn't work you start to worry. I was really depressed after the 6th time and nothing. The femara does work for a lot of people when clomid doesn't. I also take metformin and that helps regulate your cycle.

Answer: I am on my first cycle of Femara and and 1000 mg of Metformin. I am really nervous. I'm due to take my first pregnancy test in six days. I was wondering if anyone knows the percentages of how long this drug takes to produce a pregnancy?. I was diagnosed with PCOS and I do have a slight weight problem..I dont know about anyone else but I never thought becoming pregnant would be so difficult ( im only 23 years old ) Looking for support and to give some if needed.

Name: eb | Date: October 19, 2005, 9:07
Answer: I don't know percentages, but have read lots of people respond in the first 3 months. This was my first month in it and I found out Mon that I had an early miscarriage. I am sad, but am taking it as a good sign that the drug is working. ...

I have a visit with the doctor next week to discuss my options (up the dose or change meds). I am new to this whole process, and I really think I should give Femara at least one more cycle before switiching to something else. Any news about it would be great.

Name: eb | Date: October 20, 2005, 2:33
Answer: Never heard about memory loss. I've had moodiness, and hot flashes. They uped me to two 2.5 mg pills day 5-9 starting tomorrow. This will be my 2nd round on femera.

Answer: The only side effects that I have had with femara are the changes in the mood and occasional headaches. I have been having more effects with the Medformin....( then Femara ). I have had really bad headaches and nausea and I have been really tired in the past couple of days. But of caurse, side effects are different for everyone.... good luck!

Answer: I have PCOS (without the weight problem). I conceived twice on 150mg clomid and Metformin (3pills/day) with one miscarriage and one daughter. We tried that again this time but I did not respond to Clomid -on even higher doses. I took 2.5mg Femara and Metformin(only 1pill/day) produced a 22mm follicle. I got the HcG shot 3 days ago but have not noticed a rise in BBT yet. The side effects are so much better with the Femara. Good luck to you all!

Name: Stephanie | Date: October 25, 2005, 18:19
Answer: Thank you eb. I went to the dr today and she kept my meds the same for another cycle of fam 2.5 mg and Metforamin 1000mg. The only thing that she changed was the recommendation that my husband who is a cancer survivor to get a male psyical on his part of the deal to make sure that everything is okay. So I am optimistic that this month will work. I just wish that I would not hear the little comments that people say in my everyday life ( most people know what we are going through with mixed feelings.) Like the maybe you were not meant to have children and everything else like that. are most people with your case supportive or do you get the same thing?

Answer: He eb. Last time I went to the doc she gave me another round of provara to start a cycle. My body doesn't work on it's own anymore so i'm waiting for it to work.(so I can start the famera ) I was told that if it doesn't work within two weeks to take another pregnancy test, but it should. So far it has been a week. But no news on my side yet. I think that this is my month too. I recently baught one of the clearblue ovu. things from the drug store so I am hoping that that will work better then those "pregnancy test", looking things. Good luck this month and I am praying for you and all of you. Talk to you later.

Answer: Just went to the doctors today. First round of Femera - not pregnant. Second round - not sure yet. I ovulated early this month, then experienced spotting (only occurred on once) the next week. I have had non stop cramps since. Just like I experience one week prior to menstration. I am still one week away from day 28. My doctor took my blood for pregnancy, showed up negative, however, informed me in the office visit that I could in fact be pregnant. I am trying to be optomistic, but I just don't believe it. We have been ttc for 4 years. I am so tired of the disappointment:(

Answer: Does taking Femara cause you to ovulate early? the reason i ask is after taking bc i was told to test on day 11.....my 2nd round i wasn't told when to test but i tested on day 11 and ovulated on day 12.....so i think i'm suppose to ovulate on the 8th if i am right....my cycle changed last month it was 33 days and the month b4 it was 28 now this month it is 27....but i am only spotting no flow at all....and only 4days not me at all not mad ...lol....mine mostly last 25 days are longer....i will take 4 days anytime...lol

Answer: I started my second round of femara today. No wicked side effects yet. I e-mail you tomarrow to tell you how I am doing then. Hope that everything is going well with everyone and as always.....good luck!. Oh... I am unsure if Femara makes you ov early. What I do is that the day after I stop taking the femara, I start daily tests using the Clear Plan ovulation test. The monitor is about $150-200 dollars depending where you by it and the testing strips are about $50 dollars for a 30 day pack. I find it to work the best for me. I know people who have used the kind where you need to read the lines but I found that to be difficult. Last month I had really a really hard ttime reading the lines but I was having a really crampy, sometimes painful burning feeling on my left side. My doctor said that that is also a sign of ov of you are unsure ( she said that it doen't happen every month ) I hope that is a help to you.

Answer: Hi, I just started my 1st cycle of Femara on Sunday, Nov. 6th I'm taking 2 2.5mg tablets for CD3-7 so far no side effects and i'm starting day 3 in the morning. I have my US scheduled for Mon. Nov. 14 @ 11:10am and I have to bring my trigger shot with me. What should I look for as far as follies? I see everyone talking about that but I'm not too sure what sizes are we looking for? This is all new to me.

Name: eb | Date: November 8, 2005, 13:12
Answer: Hey stephanie and JND . Hang in there Stephanie a couple more days to go. It'll get better. JND I'm not sure about sizes of follies, b/c we aren't doing that part on me yet and i don't tkae trigger shot. Sorry i couldn't help more.

Name: Becca | Date: November 8, 2005, 21:48
Answer: Hi! I was doing a little research into femara and I saw JND's post. Follies need to be at least 16 mm by ovulation and your lining at least 7. Usually if a follicle is around 14 they expect it will be ready by ovulation if you take the trigger shot then. Do you use OPK to monitor in case you ovulate on your own?

Name: JND | Date: November 8, 2005, 23:41
Answer: Becca, thanks for the info.My AF if very irregular as for this month I got a +OPK on Nov. 3rd(the day before that was -) and then I got AF the same day, so I just don't understand my body. I'm praying this US will give me some insight as to what is going on and exactly when. This is my 1st cycle of Fermara.

Answer: Stephanie, are you getting the HCG triggor shots too? How many cycles have you taken femara for?

Name: Stephanie | Date: November 11, 2005, 16:26
Answer: Hi JND. I'm currently not taking any shots. I am just on femara 2.5mg and Metformin now up to 1500mg. I am in my second month of femara. I currently am being treated by my OB/GYN not a specialist. My doctor has told me that she will see me for seven months befor sending me to a specialist. I have been pregnant before three times several years ago and I lost all those babies. My dr is hopeful that the femara will work without other medications. Femara is making me ov every month so far and I am really hoping that this is my month... it would be a fantastic Christmas presant for my husband. How are you doing this month? is everything going well for you? wishing you all the best and to everyone.

Answer: Stephanie, hi this month was my first cycle of femara 2 2.5mg for CD 3-7 and I have to get an HCG trigger shot and a vag. US on Monday, my OBGYN says that the US is very good in narrowing down when I will O so I won't "miss" it. I hope I get good news by Christmas too that would be wonderful. What exactly does Metformin do? I thought that this med was for diabetes?

Name: Stephanie | Date: November 12, 2005, 20:57
Answer: Hello JND. Metformin is a medicine for diabetes but it is also to control my PCOS. It's a hormone/insulin thing I guess. I thought it was crazy too. My aunt is on the same medicine as I am for a different reason. My PCOS is the reason that I need to be on Femara- it causes infertility, weight gain and alot of really nasty side effects. Basically, my body makes more testosterone then estrogen while my insulin goes crazy. How metformin helps me with both those things some how...go figure!. why this suprises me I don't know because femara is also used in the treatmets of woman who have breast cancer!! ( found it on the internet ) Also, eb. I really don't know. If it was me I would test everyday but that would just be the nerves in me talking. Good Luck to all. Bye

Answer: DH and I have been trying to conceive now for 1 1/2 yrs. I took Clomid 50-150mg for 7 months. While the 150mg did make me ovulate, I only got pregnant once which ended in my 6th week. My RE (new since taking the Clomid) said that it was doing too much damage to my uterine lining and cervical mucous to continue with it. She said that a great choice for me would be Femara (Letrozole - generic). She said that it actually helps to build up your lining and increase cervical mucous all while helping you to ovulate. She said that it will be overtaking Clomid soon as the 1st line drug in infertility. I am currently on day 8 of my cycle and last day of taking my Femara. I have had no side effects other than being tired and it is MUCH better than the Clomid ever was. I took 5mg (two pills) for days 4-8, I have an ultrasound scheduled for this Friday (Nov. 18th) and then and IUI when I ovulate. I am so excited to be moving to this next step but nervous it won't work. Thank for all of your input!!! I wish you all the best of luck!!!!

Answer: Hi everyone. Just wanted to see how things are going on your side. I hit the peak for ov yesterday so the long hopeful waiting starts. Katie, pcos is kind of hard to discribe... it is a problem where a person has cysts in the overies that can cause really bad problems... including infertility and other things to say the least. When I first found out that I had it I went to web MD to find out the full details. I recommend that web site. Look under polycystic ovarian syndrome to answer all of your questions. Good luck to all, and keep in touch.

Is it me or am I only suppost to be fertle for 36 hours?. Abby, I have no clue what your doctor will do if femara doesn't make you ov. Maybe up your pills to two a day??? Answer: Abby, i stopped taking my BCP in May and in the beginning our plan was "whatever happens, happens!" We never really wanted to "plan" or think to much about it for the fear of when you plan something it never seems to work out. Well.....that plan changed when 6mths. out and I've only had 3 periods, so I seen my OBGYN and got started on Femara for my first cycle last month, also receiving the Noveral trigger shot CD 10-12 in the office, so I hoping and praying this month but if not we will just keep trying. I know what your saying about everyone talking to you. Everyone is always aking me when are you gonna have a baby, trust me we want one just as bad as our family wants one. Good luck to you don't late your family and friends get you down. Sometimes women don't get pregnant as easy as they say they did but if they can say oh we weren't even trying and it just happened, for some reason they feel better about the situation. I'm sure many women around you had struggles that they aren't sharing with you. I hope that made sense!! There are millions of women out there who have trouble TTC as you can gather from this website, so just hang in there it's gonna happen. Talk to us girls because trust me we understand.

Answer: Abby, I am heartbroken by your last entry. Alot of other people on this site really do understand what you are going through. My story is simular to yours. My husband and I have been trying to become pregnant since our May 7, 2005 wedding and I also need to take provera to start a cycle. My body doesn't work on it's own anymore. I am currently waiting to find out if we are pregnant and I just got done with my 2nd month of femara 2.5mg. I am 23 years old and I feel the same as you. I was so scared what people would say to me when I started. I even quit my job because of the negitive reaction from my co- workers about the whole fertility thing and their ideas of what I was doing to have the family that we so despertly need is moral or not. But with all of that and the fact that I was assulted when I was a teenager and became pregnant with twins who died in the 3rd month of pregnancy. for years I asked myself " why then and not now " and I know that my husband thinks the same way... he has been a cancer survivor for 13 years. The only thing I can offer to you is the peace of mind, knowing that medicine is not only the taking of the pills but it is faith and trusting that everything will work out and I know that you will have the child that you always wanted to have. I know that we all will. I know ( unknowing your own religious beliefs ) that god works in special ways... and please never forget that this forum is a special thing and it almost seems that even though we do not know who everyone is by detail please never forget that you are always in our prayers and that dreams really do come true. Keep that chin up kiddo!! bye. And feel free to spill you heart out at anytime.

Answer: Hey guys i really think that it was the trigger shot giving me the false +, I took another HPT(clear blue in words) last night and it said + but then this AM I took first response and the NOT line was more visible and the other line was faintly there but nothing compared to the not line. I'm happy I didn't get so excited, because in my head I kept telling myself it could be the shot so I wouldn't feel so dissappointed. My boobs are starting to feel sore today so we will see if AF shows up on the 4th, if not great! If so then I will start 2nd cycle of Femara.

Answer: I just took the HPT clear blue again and it said +, can the shot still be in my system still or what? I read on the computer that it can take 14days to be out of your system so if I got the shot on the 14th would you count from the 14th or no. If you count the 14th it is 16days past and if you don't count the 14th then it is 15days past. I think I'm going to call and get blood work done. Either way it is past 14days and I'm still getting a + result(depending which brand I use..LOL) What do you guys think?

Answer: Hey girls! Just came back from the doctors office my urine test was + and they drew my blood. I have to call tomorrow for my HCG results to see exactly how far along I am. Stephanie, you had questions about the trigger shot. I will try to make this long story short ok. I stopped taking BC in May and I have had very irregular AF's since. So my doctor wanted to put me on Femara 2 2.5mg for CD3-7 and have me follow up in the office for a vag. US on CD 10-12. That way they can see if you are getting ready to O. On the US he seen 2 eggs both 20mm, that is the size they want to see before they give you the trigger shot. My shot was Novarel 10,000units given but the nurse in the office and the doctor told me that this shot will make the egg drop within 24-36 hrs. and he told me when to BD. That's why when I was getting all of those + HPT's I thought it was the shot. My doctor said the shot wouldn't show a +. I still can't believe it, maybe after it is confirmed by blood work I will. Stephanie, don't give up!

I am asking because I am getting ready to ask my doctor about if there is anything else that I can take with the femara to increase my chances. I am ov every month with the Femara but my doctor hasn't done any blood work, ultrasounds ect since the first month. I don't know what to do... but I am ov... that is a good thing. Any idea's ladies

Answer: Abby, I have never seen anything like that before. I agree, it would be neat. The week after Christmas my husband is scheduled to get a male fertility evaluation done and he is not thrilled about it. I think that it is more an uncomfortable feeling then anything. Unsure if he can give a sample under such pressure he says. But as ever the joker he says and I quote... " Oh well... I'll take one for the team!!!". Hope everything is going well for everyone and keep in touch. I will re- test on Thursday. I will keep everyone up to date. Bye!

Answer: Hi ladies. Just got back from the doctor and excuse my babbling.. i'm sitting here crying like a little kid. My doctor has taken me off femara and put me on Clomid 50mg because and I am not wanting to scare anyone but she said that reports have come out about femara and there has been some cases of birth defects in babies when mothers have taken the drug, scary ha. I am ferious at the fact that my doctor has been putting our future childs health is such risk that I could scream. And I am unsure about my future because my obgyn was so sure that I would be pregnant by now. I am going to under go a test some kind of ink thing to see if my ovaries are blocked. They said that it can hurt. Has anyone gont through the same thing? I really hope that everyone continues to do well and eventually find happiness. I am unsure if there is any support thing like this for clomid. I start tomarrow. Thank you for all of your support. Stephanie

Answer: Hi, I am an avid reader; just never chimed in. When I saw that the question was posed about birth defects and femara; I wanted to give my thoughts. On November 30th, 2005; our local TV channel had said that there have been cases where women were on femara to get pregnant, and eventually did; were either having a "problem" pregnancy or there were problems with the child after it was born. They didn't elaborate; only saying that femara should only be used to treat breast cancer. I was shocked, seeing how I was on it for the first time the week before. I asked the nurse, and she was going to ask my obgyn; but hasn't gotten back to me yet. Hope this helps.

Answer: I think it is in all of our best interests to get ahold of our doctor and ask him/her. I am calling first thing tomorrow, seeing how he doesn't have office hours until then. It states on the Health Canada website that all doctors should have received a letter stating that they should no longer prescribe femara for infertility; by now (it states by December 2nd). I will let you know what my doctor says! Good luck to all.

Name: Katie | Date: December 6, 2005, 17:06
Answer: Hi everyone! I was pretty shocked last night when I read about the birth defects as well. I called my doctor's office first thing this morning and the nurse called me back and told me that they had not heard anything about the research at all and never receieved any kind of letter stating the warnings and risks. She told me that the doctors at my office prescribe femara to women every day and have not had any problems. The doctor is supposed to call me back sometime this week. As to the articles talking about the research, I found that there were a few things in it that seemed wrong. For example, it says that it is stated on the drugs label to not take it "if you are pregnant, could be come pregnant, or breastfeeding". Well, I still have my bottle from this month and it only says to not take "if you are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant, or are breast feeding". It says nothing about becoming pregnant. Also, I read somewhere when I was researching this at the beginning that it is out of your system after like 48 hours after you take your last pill. If it is out that quickly, how could it affect your baby if you haven't even released an egg? As you can probably tell, my mind has been going a mile a minute about this and the more I think about it and the "research" it just doesn't add up to me. Why would any doctor prescribe something that has such risks? My nurse made a comment that makes a lot of sense. She told me that this stuff is tested and retested before they are even allowed to prescribe it. It seems like a lot of research went into femara being used in cases like ours. The research in Canada doesn't give any details about who they tested and all the different factors that go into these women having babies with birth defects. Just my thoughts. i am anxious to see what everyone else found out.

Answer: Hi Katie, I looked on my old bottles of femera and they say what yours say. I hope this is my month but if not i have 2 refills before i am supposed to see re again. I think i'll probably take them. I think we should also consider the fact the some insurance companies cover femera, and the fact that canada mya be losing some american online drug orders if our insurance is paying for femera. Just my thoughts on the subject . I'd love to hear from anyone else that has spoken to their doctor.

Answer: Just a side note for those of you who are worried about femara... my friend has an uncle who is an OBGYN and she called him after hearing my concerns to see what he had to say. He said that he has not heard or had anything come across his desk on these issues and that most manufacturers of medicine often go through this process to get the "target" off of their backs just in case anything were to ever happen. That of course alleviated most of my concerns. He also said that most doctors are switching from clomid to femara because it works a lot better and it is easier to use (less side effects, ect.). Hope this helps some of ya'll.. definitely helped me!!

This is so frustrating and I am glad to hear I am not alone. I would like to hear more about the birth defect info if anyone has any input. Thanks

Answer: I already posted my research on another thread, but I am copying it to this one too, because I think anyone on Femara; who got pregant while on it (like me); who is considering taking; it or who wants it but their doctor is scared from the Canadian study to prescribe it needs to see it. Here's what I found out: I'm currently 31 weeks pregnant with a Femara baby and 2 level II ultrasounds, one at 17 weeks and one at 29 weeks (because I'm over 35), showed no indications of any problems. I did a lot of research when the news reports on Femara came out as they scared me, and based on my research I plan on taking Femara again when I try for a second child. My research showed that most of the women who have reported birth defects turned out to have already been pregnant when taking the drug (the same thing can happen with Clomid). Also, I found a scientific analysis of the Canadian study that claims that Femara has a higher incidence of birth defects that complained that the Canadian study could have been skewed because a high proportion of the women taking the Femara of the 150 people they followed were older (already at a higher risk of birth defects), and it is also known that the incidence of birth defects is generally higher following infertility treatment, so because they only compared the percentage of defects with Femara to the percentage of defects with a group that had no fertility treatment whatsoever, you can't tell from the study whether the Femara would create any more risk of defect than any other fertility drug. That science group said that the Femara group should have been compared to groups undergoing other types of infertility treatment, not those who had no treatment . That scientific analysis also noted that the group of pregnant women studied that didn't take the drug (the control group) had an abormally low number of reported birth defects, so it might not be the best control group for comparison. According to the March of Dimes, 3-5% of babies in the United States are born with birth defects. The university of Iowa did a study which came out a few weeks ago that noted that 6.2 % of IVF babies have some sort of birth defect, 5% of IUI babies have some sort of birth defect and that the rate of birth defects in naturally conceived babies was 4.4%. In the Canadian study on Femara, the control group only had 1.8% with birth defects which is unusual, and the Femara group had about 4.7% which is not very far off of what would have been expected anyway, particularly as that group had a lot of older women. Plus the Femara group was not only made up of people who solely took Femara- some had taken other fertility drugs either before or with the Femara as well, which also could have skewed the results. The results of any research report can be misleading based on the data used behind the report. Based on my research, it's my opinion that the news reports were a whole lot of hoopla over a study that basically means nothing and appears to have been flawed, but everyone needs to decide for themselves. Hope this helps you guys.

Name: Nicole | Date: March 21, 2006, 15:45
Answer: After reading all of your concerns about birth defects and femara, I did a little research myself. The research says that the risk of birth defects happens if you take femara while pregnant. Taking femara as prescribed, CD 3-7, you have very little chance of being pregnant because you have not yet ovulated. As long as you follow Dr's orders and take the medication as prescribed and do preg tests if you aren't having your period, then it seems as if femara is safe to take.

Answer: I just started Femara this month. I have a 2 1/2 year old daughter that we conceived on clomid. When we decided it was time to try for another one, we got pregnant the first month off of the pill and it ended in miscarriage at 7 weeks. As hard as that was, I tried to set my mind on the future and knew that everything happens for a reason. After the m/c, I was diagnosed with PCOS and my nurse practitioner gave me clomid 2 months in a row and it didn't work. She just started me on Femara this month and I went in today and had a 20mm and 14mm follicle. I got my injection today and have to wait and see if it works this month. Wish me luck!!!

Answer: Hi KristinaBrown- I'm sorry to hear about your m/c, but you're right, everything does happen for a reason. That's so great that the Femara helped you produce follicles. I really hope it works for you this time! I also have PCOS, but no weight issues so they didn't prescribe metformin. I'm on my 1st cycle of clomid 50mg cd 3-7. I went in this am (cd10) for a sonogram to check for # of follicles. It looked the same as last time- several in each ovary, but none larger than 10mm. I go back next week to see if they grow since it could be too early to tell. I am wondering if Femara would be better for me, but I need to give the clomid a chance I guess. Best of luck!

I just took it this month, and I ovulated..so hopefully it works!..but I have been using clomid for a long time (14 cycles or so) and I have had 3 early miscarriages...the specialist said that femara does not thin out the uterus lining like clomid, and femara is out of your system before you ovulate, so the risk of birth defects are way lower...I hope it works for you!!! I didn't feel any side effects at all from it.

Answer: My husband and I have spent years trying to get pregnant and not finding out I had PCOS until about 1 1/2 years ago. I had tried Clomid several times in the past and finally found a doctor who was very helpful. After 2 months of Clomid and ultrasounds, she told me that the Clomid was making my uterus too thin (along with not producing adequate follicles) and put me on Femara. I tried 2.5 mg dose with little results. The next month I took twice the dosage and had better results: 2 possibles measuring 14 and 16. This month I tried 2.5x3 and went for my 12 day ultra sound Monday, and was told that I was only measuring a 14-I was told to come back in 2 days-today: I measured a 19 and was given 10,000 units HCG injection: one in each hip. Now I'm praying that this is the month that we get our miracle. I didn't have any side effects with the Femara and it has helped. I think you should follow your doctor's advice and give it a try; everyone is different and it's an inexpensive fertility treatment. Good luck!

Answer: Tabol, when your dr. said your lining was too thin from the clomid, do you remember what it was measuring? I'm having trouble with my lining. I've yet to be on any fertility drugs, but my lining only reached 7.2mm this month. Just wondering if this is considered too thin by the standards of other dr's???

Answer: Hi, sherryz...my uterus was measuring about a 7 (I measured a 1 cm, or 10 mm, this time). According to my doctors, a normal lining should measure between 9-16. I'd definately ask your doctor about it. Clomid is a good fertility treatment, but it doesn't work for everyone as we are all different. I hope you get your answers.

Answer: thanks everyone... I think I was just coming down with something. We were going to try for IUI later this week (day 14) since hubby is out of town for the next couple of days. Today I had a 2 +cm follicle so I'm ready to ovulate (this is early for me). Messes up the IUI plans for this month but they gave me a shot of Ovidrel because we were 'practicing' ;) yesterday. Those swimmers could still have a chance! Keep your fingers crossed. btw, ever heard this one before.... the nurse said that if I get pregnant she predicts a girl because the late swimmers are the females. At this point gender doesn't matter at all... just a baby! Excuse the rambling, but as someone mentioned earlier in this thread it isn't easy talking to friends and family about this. They all want the best outcome but I really don't like giving a play by play to my folks. At least here I can talk about the details with people going through the same things.

Answer: I have taken Femara and got pregnant in the 1st month. We have 3 other children, I used clomid to get pregnant with them. My doctor said this was newer than clomid and less side effects. So I said ok and he had me taking two 2.5mg pills day 3-7 of my cycle and I got pregnant. It took almost 10 months to get pregnant with my third child on clomid. My second it took 6-9 months. I am now 9 weeks pregnant after taking Femara one cycle. My only problem now is I have a cyst on my right ovary that has been growing. So I have had ultrasounds regularly to keep a check on it.

Answer: I have just been presribed Femara. However, while taking it, when should you have intercourse? Are there any side effects if you should conceive in the 3-7 day time frame when you are taking femara. I know that it states that Femara shouldnt be taken when you are pregnant. Therefore, should you have intercourse before, during, or after taking your dose of Femara?

Name: JND | Date: January 31, 2008, 23:35
Answer: Pumpkinjr, I took femera also and I don't think that it matters if you bd before or during, because you aren't going to "o" on cd3-7 thats usually way to early. You need to after probably focusing on cd10-16 and maybe even after, just in case you "o" late. Are you taking the trigger shot too? I did and I got pregnant my first cycle. I'm probably going to have to do it again. Good luck!

I am now seeing another specialist who told us that we have lots of options since they could not find anything wrong with me and my husband. He decided to put me on the femara instead of doing any invitro. This will be my first month on it. I am hoping that the femara will work.

Answer: I am currently on my 2ww after my first "go" with femara. I've been through 3 cycles using clomid. All cycles created healthy eggs, and my lining was fine (10 the first 2 times and 9 the second). The largest egg I produced was 18 (mm I guess), and one cycle I produced 2 eggs. I am taking the trigger shot of hcg, but I still have not conceived. The doctor wanted to move me to injectables, but the cost is overwhelming ($700 to $1500 a month - whew!). So, he is letting me try femara this time. My egg measured much larger than usual (24) and my lining was 10, so we'll see. P.S. I have conceived 3 times with no help from clomid or femara, but all 3 ended in m/c.

Answer: We have been TTC since October 2007, I was on the pill for about 6 years and have been off the pill for one year. Ever since being off the pill, I have only gotten my period twice. We found out a little over a month ago that I have Polycystic ovaries, which explains the no period thing. I don't have any other symptons of PCOS. Last month my doctor put me on metmorfin and the pill again for one month just to regulate the hormones & so I would get a period. On Monday I started taking Femara 2.5 mg 2 pills a day for days 3-7 and Friday was the last day. I go back to the doctor on Monday to have a ultrasound and see if the Femara worked in making an egg =) We are very nervous and excited. I haven't had any side affects from the Femara, but the Metmorfin gives me horrible side affects like cramping, diarhea, loss of appetite ect. Answer: I have been taking Femara, Metanx, and Metformin, (2000 mg) for about 6 months. I stopped taking the Metformin because the side effects were terrible. I had a laproscopy and they found my fallopian tubes were blocked. They unblocked them and 4 months later I was pregnant. I miscarried at 10 1/2 weeks. The DR says your next 3 cycles you are more likely to conceive, but for me, my cycle was very irregular. 8 months later I've only had 4 cycles and have been on Femara, Metanx, and Metformin and no luck. But I do think Femara works and I have had no side effects at all. I am still taking the Metformin, even though the side effects are bad, and I have faith that soon I get pregnant again. Good luck to everyone... God Bless!

Answer: Hi Everyone, I am new to the site and enjoyed reading everyone's experiences as they relate to mine as well. I am 25 y/o and my husband is 26 y/o. We have been trying to conceive for about a year. He is healthy, but I have PCOS. I am seeing a RE and he has told me that I am not ovulating. He has put me on 1500mg of Metformin per day. Currently, I am taking Prometrium to stimulate AF and will take Femara on cycle days 7-11. I wish everyone the best. I just hope and pray that this works!!!

Answer: Tooth Fairy... whatever your doctor recommends. Mine syas days 3-7 I am new here. I am currently 45 --almost 46 ys old. I have had a history of breast cancer and was diagnosed right about the time my DH and I wanted to start TTC. I had to wait 5 years before considering pregnancy and even then some doctors advised against it. (to avoid reoccurance or the estrogen-positive cancer). That was back in 1999. We have since been TTC since about 2005/6. One year and a bit naturally, then about 1-2 yrs through a fertility clinic. I was on clomid and we occassionall could afford an IUI. I could not take injections due to the risk of a reoccurance of cancer. Since then. we took a year off and then I decided to switch to a new doctor. He has put me on Femara days 3-7- starting with my first cycle last month. I am also seing an Endo Dr. b/c I am over weight and borderline Diabetic T2 so I started taking 2x 550 Metformin. This past cycle was the first time I didn't ovulate. Also, last month follicles were small. I have been experiencing really bad hot flashes since I started taking the meds and don't know if its the drugs or (God forbid) I am entering menopause. I think the flashes are too severe to be menopause because its more sudden than natural hot flashes would be. Considering I didn't ov and I am flashing I bet my estrogen is low. I am worried. I will try again next month but we seem to have so much against us 1. I am over 40! (you know what that means) 2. We have been trying for 4 years 3. Hubby has some nuerolical health issues that may be affecting his fertility issues (we are trying to see what we can do with tests) 4. I havent many options due to history of breat cancer 5. I am overweight (and trying desperately to change that too) I am tired of people saying to me "You can always adopt". I wanna say... No, not really. It's not that easy and not everyone "qualifies" but thanks anyway. In my heart I "believe" we still have a chance, but emotions often get the better of me and statistics are not in my favour. We truly need a miracle and a ton of prayers. Any advice is also welcome :) Thanks to everyone for sharing!
