Sonograms
Sonograms are a very important part of both diagnosing infertility and fertility treatments. They are a highly sensitive test that can detect many abnormalities in the uterus and ovaries. Sonogram testing is often used in women where polyps or fibroids are suspected as well as in women who have experienced multiple miscarriages.
Women using fertility drugs to help them conceive will also have sonograms done to monitor the development of their ovary follicles. Additionally, sonograms are used during IVF to help guide the physician during the retrieval process and again during the transferring of embryos. Women undergoing egg donation will have sonograms to monitor her use of fertility medications and during the egg retrieval process.
During a sonogram, a woman will be in a similar position as when she has a pap smear done. A speculum will be inserted into her vagina to help open it up and a transvaginal probe will be inserted. A catheter is then used to inject a saline solution into the uterus, thereby expanding it and allowing the physician administering the sonogram greater visibility. Conventional sonogram machines have the ability to print off images, which can then be taken back to your fertility specialist. Additionally, a preliminary report can often be prepared if you have an appointment at your fertility clinic that day.
Some fertility clinics, like the Center for Assisted Reproduction in Dallas, use all digital sonogram equipment. In addition to the standard grey scale image produced by sonograms, this state-of-the-art technology also produces a variety of other images including 3D imaging. The sonogram machines used by CAR also have color Doppler technology, which allows blood flow in both the uterus and ovaries to be evaluated. Because of the greater range of detail, results from digital sonograms are much more accurate.
To make it easier for their patients, CAR has six digital sonograms onsite. Patients do not need to visit another location, thereby cutting out much of the hassle. Additionally, since the sonograms are performed onsite, your physician is able to make those important decisions about your treatment quickly.
